Unpopular opinion, I read Starter Villain by John Scalzi earlier this year and didn't like it 😅I thought the humour was too cringy and it was trying too hard to be funny 🙈 I also read Bone Season earlier this year too (the re-released/newer version), initially I thought it was just OK. My edition had the prequel included at the back of it, and I found that I enjoyed the series a bit more after reading that as it provided a bit more context/clarification to the magical system. Would be open to reading the next one in the series. I picked up Horrorstor this year too! I actually like how the book looks like an Ikea catalogue lol. Really keen to read this one since I loved My Best Friend's Exorcism, and his other book The Southern Bookclub's Guide to Slaying Vampires! His other recent book, How to Sell a Haunted House not so much.

Hi Emily, did Pear get re-homed? I know you were considering it and I may have missed the video where you discussed it. Also, in Ontario, at least, Value Village is putting price stickers on the outside of books now. Are they doing that in Quebec? If so, how are you removing them so well?

I thought my best friend’s exorcism was okay, like a solid 3 star. I LOVED final girls. Some of it may be because I’ve seen all of the old horror movies that it references but final girls was like 4.5 stars I would say

The Bone Season is the reason I'm afraid to read anything else by the author😅 It was a long time ago, but I still remember being confused, irritated and hating worldbuilding, main character and especially hating the romance....

Speaking of thrillers and seeing Razorblade Tears in the background…maybe David Joy? I’ve read The Line That Held Us and it’s intense. I want to try some of his other books. When These Mountains Burn has been recommended to me multiple times.

Oh! Or Peter Heller who writes across literary fiction and thriller. The River was super intense. But Celine is my fav so far (the PI main character is inspired by Heller’s mother - she sounds like quite a lady). He also has a dystopian post pandemic book The Dog Stars, which I have not read.

So sad that you're so hot but the first thing I noticed is that you match your new lighting! 😂💜 Which book would you recommend to start reading Simone St.James? Afraid that if I start by the best one I'll end up disapointed by the others... 🤔 And kinda relieved about Grady Hendrix... Started by "The final girls support group" and didn't enjoy it that much... (Also bought most of his books before starting to read his novels... Never again! 🤦‍♀️😂) Been in a reading slump lately so no recommendations to give but picked up a few!

In terms of mystery thriller, hear me out : Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. It's more of a historical fiction with twists, but I think it can be categorized as mystery. I've LOVED it and it might be queer.. 😏 Also, The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. It has a polarizing plot twist, but, after reading the afterword especially, I'm convinced it was done respectfully. These two were two that felt the least' cheap ' as unfortunately popular thrillers tend to feel to me, and evoked the most emotions. Fingersmith felt a bit too long but literally put a spell on me and the queer romance was 🔥

one good non-fiction AND Elena Ferrante recomandation is her essays on writing and literature ( In the Margins) it just adds so much meaning to the books to see how she feels about the characthers too, how the dynamics with Lenu and Lila are other than in her previous books, and she is just an amazing writer, i found them amazing

@@BookswithEmilyFox You read more than me the first 5 years I watched, I'd say you're about 70 books ahead! No GR account public or otherwise. I have read Blood over bright Haven, Sword of Kaigen, I Who have never Known Men but not My brilliant friend some options you can choose from could be Octavia E Butler (except Kindred and wild seed I have read) other options Book Lovers, men who hate women any Jane Austen (except Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park) I'd prefer woman authors for my stats but His Dark Materials and The girl with the Dragon Tattoo are options. My goal is ⅔ books by women so a book by a man really counts as 3 total. Tou could make it easy and just pick the bookclub ones but that's no fun lol Also doesn't need to be something you've read, canary in a coal mine is a job I'm happy to do.

The book I'm reading right now is called The Familiars by Stacy Halls it takes place in 1612 and is about women being accused of Witchcraft and one of them is a midwife. It's really good so far I stopped counting at 80 books I've bought this year.... oops I've been reading smut the last weekend of every month for fun, the next one I have is Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad B*ner by Raven Blackbird 👀 lol

@@BookswithEmilyFox I complained to my manager about how bloody the cartoon was saying "I can't believe in Britain they would show this cartoon to children." And she told me this is an adult story not intended for children. People do like it and you get to see how precarious life is for wildlife from their perspective. But it is somewhat political with respect to other factions of warren inhabitants who want to control the good rabbits. And they're like thugs or mafia in being in control.

My eyebrows SHOT UP when I saw you got Watership Down. I am very intrigued by what you'll think of it. And I actually just traded in a bunch of books for store credit at my local used bookstore and loaded up on old mass market fantasy and scifi books. Started reading one of them, Dragon's Winter by Elizabeth A. Lynn and am already totally in love. I'd never read anything by her or even heard of her, but for a nearly thirty year old book, it feels really progressive. Lots of women in leading/military roles, and the main male character is queer. I'd say this one was a hidden gem!
