Watch this video to see what it’s like to travel onboard Japan’s Shinkansen Train! This high speed bullet train is not only one of the world’s most famous trains, it’s also the world’s first High Speed Train!
In this video, you’ll see what it’s like to travel on the Shinkansen High Speed Train in the Green Car, which is similar to First Class. You’ll join us as we start in Osaka and travel north, to Tokyo. The 319 mile (514km) trip will only take about 2 and a half hours thanks to the high speed train!
We’ll hit speeds of up to 177 miles per hour as we zoom across the Japanese countryside.
We’ll explain exactly how we booked our tickets on the Shinkansen so you can do the same thing.

Just a correction. Luggage less than 160 cm (length x width x height) may be taken on board and placed in the overhead rack or kept at the seat. From 160 cm, a reservation needs to be made. this means reserving seats at the back (last row) of a forward-facing cabin that also has dedicated space between the seat and the wall of the cabin for this luggage. There is NO extra charge for this seat with the allocated luggage space. Some cars also have a luggage rack (with security restraints) close to the bathrooms that can be reserved. Failure to secure prior reservations for "oversized" luggage will result in a small fine. Also note that passengers are allowed 2 pieces of luggage, with a 30 kg (about 66 lbs.) weight limit per piece.

When buying the tickets at the counter, just point out that you have big luggage. When buying from a ticket vending machine, the machine should even just ask you if you have any oversized luggage and will point you to the options of either the last row or, if available, the luggage racks. For those luggage racks, if available, you also need to add it to your reservation. If you have not made a reservation, you are requested to notify the crew while boarding. And yes, I have seen checks where the crew noticed luggage behind the last row while the last row was empty and they were able to identify the passengers they belong to without even asking anyone, so they do look out when boarding for this. Those people were kindly asked to move the luggage (as the cases were not considered oversized). When there is no last row seat available anymore and no luggage rack, and you are bringing oversized luggage? You'll have to wait for a train that has space for you. But with so many trains going between Osaka and Tokyo, that should not be a problem.

We have three trips on Shinkansen this year, the first in March. Really smooth, quick and precisely on time. Stops at station along the way were less than 90 seconds from whoa to go so you make sure you're on the right place on the platform with the doors lining up precisely with the platform guidelines. Plenty of legroom, even in economy. Wifi was quite acceptable. On our Tokyo-Osaka trip Mt Fuji was cloudfree and was a spectacular sight, just as good as any tourist pamphlets! On a side note, what added to our Japanese experience was the general courteousness and politeness of the Japanese people we dealt with. Absolutely no graffiti, no homeless, amazingly clean and (importatntly) absolutely no tipping. We liked Japan it so much we went back for a second trip a few month later. I don't think you will ever see a bullet train in USA - really expensive to establish the right infrastructure and it would need to be done from public funding. No private company would have the funds to do such a project, which would take years to complete. I can't imagine 340,000 Americans giving up their cars to travel on a train.- every day. Anyway, superb video Jeb. Your production quality and commentary keeps improving.

Will have to disagree agree on a couple things. I did see some graffiti (rare) and homeless (really rare) in Tokyo last week. Also Brightline is doing well in Florida and if they do LA to Vegas (that will be more in line with HSR).

Those 'Green Cars' are more of a premium economy/business class type of rating if we compared it to planes. The actual 'First Class' counterpart on the Shinkansen would be the 'Grand Class', only available on the Hayabusa/Kagayaki with the food service (Other services just offer the seating I remember). Anyways a great video and hopefully you'll keep it up! Thanks for the content!

I got a JR Rail Pass $325 in 2019 for 7 days of Green car travel. Such a great value. My crew almost missed our train from Tokyo to Osaka because we couldn't find the station. Luckily, a helpful Japanese man saw us struggling and he walked us to the station. We made it on the train with 30 seconds to spare.
@Hans-gb4mv
@Hans-gb4mv 5 ай бұрын
JR Passes have increased in price this year, considerable, somewhere between 60 and 70% increase, and no longer allowed to be sold at a discount by travel agencies. The Pass is a great option if you plan to travel far by Shinkansen, but from now on, it is recommended to check beforehand if the pass will be worth it. One advantage is that if you have a pass, you can now also use the ticket machines to make your seat reservation, and if you buy it online, directly from JR, you can even make online seat reservations.

Having used the Shinkansen frequently over my life, I can attest to how much of a spaceship it feels like. And when you really put it into perspective - how it used to be an 8-12 hour car ride, let alone a 7 day ride by horse 200 years ago - you realize how amazing it is to have such a train available. Houston-Dallas corridor is rumored to be using the N700 Series trains, and when it does come to reality, I hope Texas will be able to experience the glory of the Shinkansen. To anybody interested, the Nozomi is the express service between the biggest cities, but there are cheaper trains that stop at more cities (although they have a similar top speed) - the Hikari (fastest train included in the JR Pass) which follows the Nozomi route, but becomes a local Shinkansen between Nagoya and Osaka; Kodama Shinki which is a local Shinkansen all the way through the line.

In regards to the oversized bags, the sections you highlighted at the back of each carriage are for storage are actually free. You just need to book them in advance (on a 1st come, 1st served basis). But as you found out there is ample storage for bags above your seat. Top tip for travellers in the normal cars. If your route has the 2 -3 seat configuration such as the (Shin-Osaka - Hakata route) and you have a lot of luggage book seats in the 2 seat side of the train as there is more overhead space per seat than the other side.

I took this exact route in reverse this summer. The Green Car is definitely worth the small upgrade. And I’m going to send my bags ahead next time as well. Looking forward to taking the Osaka to Tokyo route myself in June.

Hi Jeb & Suzanne. I found your channel while suffering from a nasty bout of coughing from the flu. I sat in my recliner all night suffering, but your videos saw me through it. So thank you for taking me all over the world and in my own backyard, Canada 🇨🇦. May God continue to protect you and your wife on your journeys. 🙏🏻💖from Canada 🇨🇦🥅🏒

Just a few good things I can say about Shinkansen just off the top of my head: 1. You just show up at the station, board and then you're away and there's no need to get to the station 90-120 minutes prior to boarding. This seriously helps travellers save time despite trains are slower than planes 2. Chances of a delay are virtually zero under normal conditions 3. No secrutiy to stop you from bringing whatever you like to eat on board (note: do be courteous and bring food that doesn't have a strong scent like fried foods) 4. When you get there you're (usually) already downtown 5. A perfect safety record 6. Affordable 7. Comfy seats and larger leg room 8. No seatbelts, no turbulenses, and no weird carryon restrictions

I travelled on this exact same train from Hakata to Hiroshima around 6 years ago. We actually experienced a 30 minute delay in the service (an extreme rarity in Japan) due to a massive thunderstorm blanketing the area. I actually didn’t know what was going on until I asked around. Apparently the crew and attendants went out of their way to apologize and notify us, and I just didn’t realized because the announcements were made in Japanese!

For the United States absolutely a high speed rail that goes from DC to NY. I’ve only ever lived in the NE so I can’t comment on the rest of the country. I’m sure it would be an asset in the south and Midwest as well.

There should definitely be a true “Shinkansen” style train between New York and Chicago, with stops in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis and Chicago. (I just want the Pittsburgh-NYC segment for my own use)

Great video Jeb! Just an FYI, it doesn’t cost anymore to reserve the seats in the last row of the car (in regular or green class) where there is room to store your oversized bags behind the seats. We just got back from Japan last month and used the smartEX app on our phone to purchase them on each of our train trips. It was great to purchase the seats ahead of time to ensure we had the back row seats for our luggage. Glad you enjoyed your trip!
