I recently joined a new company in a new role. I wanted to share some tips and tricks I picked up through the years when joining a new company or team.
1. **Ask questions**. Challenge the status quo.
2. **Form a mental map of who knows what**. If you need to learn about one specific area, you know who the go-to should be.
3. **Document everything**. This will be your reference material later. And help others ramp up to become a ramp up doc. For some companies that have performance reviews, you'll have an easier time as you know exactly what you've worked on.
4. **Lean on your support network** (manager, team members, anyone you've interacted with). They're there to help you succeed.
1. know what to do, not to do
2. lean on them to give you guidance
5. **it's a marathon, not a sprint**. Don't burn yourself out trying to learn too many things and ramp up quickly. Keep working at a sustainable pace
6. **Try to meet everyone and say hi**. Best time to introduce yourself and build connections.
7. **Don't worry too much about the coding.** Most companies will have ramp up time for you to learn.
8. **Learn the tools and processes.** Ask if there's best practices around what tools you should use, and learn them well. These will save so much time.
9. **Make sure you have a concrete plan for ramping up**. This should come from your manager or you can make one yourself. Set up 15-day, 30-day, 45-day goals and share with your manager. This will ensure you're tackling the right projects and focusing on the highest impact work.

This was super necessary for me. CS is a lot of self-learning and I think that taking initiative to learn things, while is not a part of a job description, is mandatory for developers if they want to actually learn and make beneficial progress towards tasks.

I think the ramp-up plan point was great, especially about being proactive with it if the manager doesn't have one. Do you have suggestions about general milestones that could be good for each? You had a good one for 15-day, like "schedule weekly 1-on-1 with Manager"
