There were 400,000 requests for H-1b visas this year, yet U.S. tech unemployment is highest it has ever been, there were 350,000 tech people laid off and every linked in tech job get 100+ applicants. There is no cycle going on, there is just massive discrimination against better qualified local engineers. Go read DOJ vs Facebook 2020 (or Apple 2023). 2600+ cases of discrimination against better qualfied local engineers. Managers from a certain country, hire only from that country, and they protect their own from that country from having to compete with better qualified local engineers. Simple as that. If you want to open your eyes wide, just go read that indictment it is on the USDOJ.

Thanks for the insight as to what working in a big tech company intails... **all that planning and work!** One take away that I have from your video is that there is something exiting coming out of the industry especially at FAANG when it comes to AI.

Congrats on your achievement. I remember when I saw the first of your videos (you were at Twitter's office); your professionalism and manner when talking struck me because you gave me the impression of being a competitive engineer. Anyway, I think it was an "A day in the life of a Twitter swe" video or something like that; back then, Twitter was considered a top company. However, little did I know that you were going to FAANG and become a manager, but in retrospect, I should have seen it coming because it suits you. Congrats! I would like to hear more stories from you, how you progressed into becoming a manager at FAANG, and what skills you developed that got you there.

Our experiences are similar in that the first course of CS was an introduction to logic, but the second was an introduction to the basics of CS fundamentals using a programming language (Python ^,^). However, I struggled there, and yes, people did drop out. The next language was... C++. What made me realize that I was behind was when I joined a local Hackathon, and because I was not able to take any internships at that time, I decided to build apps in Android by myself after I got inspired by a junior dev I met in that Hackathon event. My question is, do you consider it a dealbreaker if a new grad never had an internship? What if they demonstrated some useful skills through their projects? Thanks in advance!

I would wait until there are independent reviews done to make sure your getting a good investment. Getting a year old product can save you a ton of money though too. I usually go by how many more years of support something has to gauge how much it should cost.

Totally agree - apple has been doing well with support so the previous gen should hopefully get several years out of it. The 2018 that I have is getting to its end of life, hence why i'm thinking about this switch :) But 100% agree on your point about savings + support!

Great video, this video shows that AI is not replacing us just yet. However, we can use it to speed up production, but also, that means that some junior position will be impacted in t he short-term.

The second currency, the relationship one, requires a lot more work to build because people need to trust you for work-related issues and more. Would love to know more about it. But, when you spoke about the first one, the performance currency, you said that the quality of work done would dictate if you are eligible for a promotion, then you must be working in a critical project/team within the org and complete the project which can be difficult... is it there where a mentor can be helpful? When you have to overcome a technical challenge, but you are struggling and need help?
@codingwithzhia
@codingwithzhia 3 ай бұрын
Hi Emmanuel, That's a great question about the relationship currency! It can definitely be tough to build trust with someone at work, but it's definitely worth the effort. A mentor can be a great resource for both technical challenges and for your career development in general. In terms of your point about a critical project or team, a mentor can definitely be helpful there too. They can help you navigate the project politics and give you advice on how to get your work noticed by the right people. But even if you're not on a super high-profile project, a mentor can still be a valuable asset. I'd love to hear more about your experience with finding a mentor at work. What kind of challenges did you face? And what tips would you give to someone who is just starting out in their search?

@@codingwithzhia My apology for the late reply. My experience is academic-related since I do not have any experience in tech (for now), but maybe I can give some insight into my brother's experience as SWE. When he started, he reached out to people for help, and one of them was a former classmate who would land a hand from time to time; was it not for that person, my brother would not have performed as well as he did. To answer the first question, I think he struggled to understand the tech stack as he was starting a new position. For the second one, a person who is starting a new position should not try to do all the work by themselves because your team needs to ship the product on time. So get a mentor!

Loving the video. 1) I will mention professors Novak, Malinski, and Leibman because they were instrumental in my success in getting my CS bachelor and discovering a burning passion for Android development. 2) Novak who has provided the winning letter that got me accepted for my graduate studies (not sure I'll pursue it when my work visa gets here.)

This was super necessary for me. CS is a lot of self-learning and I think that taking initiative to learn things, while is not a part of a job description, is mandatory for developers if they want to actually learn and make beneficial progress towards tasks.

What would you recommend a new grad student do to improve their algorithmic and logic skills?
@codingwithzhia
@codingwithzhia 10 ай бұрын
I think a combination of reading and practical application would work best. There are several books on algorithms like Designing Algorithm Manual: amzn.to/3rpAj2P that's great for learning. And practical application involves doing it like on Leetcode so you can get more practice.

@TwentyFi5ToLife Thank you, sir, for answering my question and giving me insight 🙏🏿 as to how I can improve in coding interviews. I have one more question, and I promise this is the last one -- I'd hate to waste your time (I know that at Meta, you guys work 60-70 hours/week, so I'll cut it short). My goal is to work for Meta Platforms (in its ads department) eventually, but I will shortly start my career as a software engineer in a bank. So, my question is, how do I get there? Is there any tech stack or path to work on ads? I guess I am looking for someone to guide me on this. Thank you in advance!
