Word is Volvo is offering a built in microwave as an upgrade in their new 220’s and above. Of course it’s a $30,000 option, but at least it’s convenient. Right in the cab, just behind the seat, next to the beer, uh, I mean soda cooler. I don’t recommend the micro in the bucket option. Although $5,000 cheaper than the in cab version, it really cuts down on the capacity of the bucket. 😅

True that. I worked in coal mines and everything possible is done to flameproof the diesel machines to the extent that they don't even have electrical systems except for the lights. Hydraulic pipes however are a fire hazard and they actually have dates on them to help us with maintenance.

the powder in the ire extinguishers gets caked up after time - you can rap them with a rubber hammer and that will loosen them up - you can check them by holding them in middle and slowly tilting them left to right - you can feel the powder running back and forth - it's a common thing for extinguishers mounted on things that move , the vibrations make the powder settle
@ecclesmilligan87129 ай бұрын
When Chris said the extinguisher did not work it reminded me of Farmcraft101's boom lift fire from about 7 months ago. His extinguisher did not work either.
@fhuber75079 ай бұрын
I like storing dry chem fire extinguishers on their side, then flip and give a whack (not trying to bend the bottle..) to break up the powder before use. It just settles and compacts. With no moisture inside the extinguisher, a shock is usually all they need. The compacting of powder is one of the reasons for the periodic inspection/refill requirements (replacement of non-refillables)
@deadslow2019 ай бұрын
I would not use fire extinguisher if not truly needed. That powder is very highly corrosive and it will be all over the place.

CO2 extinguishers can't pack. I have a chemical one a CO2 one and a pressurized water one. 99% of the time the water one does the job. The CO2 would be my next choice as it is more likely to not be plugged than the chemical one.

Hydraulic hoses don't give any warning in my experience, Surely Chris has the same experience. Off to the shop for some hoses AND a working fire extinguisher. The dirt was probably easier to clean off than white chemical dust anyway, so that's the bright side 🙂

I’m glad you were safe during that situation and it shows that staying focused and not panicking allowed you to find an alternate solution to extinguish the fire when the extinguisher malfunctioned.

John over at Farm Craft had a fire extinguisher fail on him while fixing his boom lift. He did a segment on how fire extinguishers need constant maintenance like turning them over to unpack the solids, having them recharged and replacing them when they reach the end of their life, check the bottom. Also, as John found out, mud dobbers love to plug up the tip, which can render them useless in an emergency. I would have all your fire extinguishers checked out by a professional or replace of they are expired.

Try to mount the extinguisher horizontally. Mounted vertically the powder packs into a hard mass into a space of constant volume. Horizontally, th space is wider at the "top" and will break loose easier.

With ABC powder extinguishers… you have to monthly tip the price extinguishers upside down and shake them to loosen the power inside as the power will compact on itself inside! Even if not stored standing up on on side the power will compact! If need to use before need to shake it turn upside down etc to make sure powder to flow!!!! Or you get what you got cluster F
@glennbrown19619 ай бұрын
With dry powder fire Extinguishers, the powder will settle to a hard mass in the bottom of the bottle through vibration. It is good practice to turn them upside down and give them a thump or two and a shake up regularly and check the guage to make sure they have pressure. Quite often they won't work when needed. It pays to have a few around a piece of equipment. They are cheap insurance. Love the D6. Brings back childhood memories. Ran a D4 when I was 6 years old back in the 60s then sometimes the D6 when my Dad wasn't on it. Clearing young eauculipt forest for farming ground. The problem with dry powder extinguishers is that the vibration of the machine packs the powder so it goes hard. Trick is to have multiples of two each mounted at 90 degrees. For example one mounted vertically and another mounted horizontally and every month or so you swap them over. Bonus with two extinguishers is that you have twice as many chances to succeed. You also have twice as many chances to fail. Such is life.

DeWalt and Milwaukee batteries tend to only die to abuse or being shaken to failure on the high torque impacts. Of course, there are statistical outliers of early failures but that's why the warranty is provided. On a leaf blower, it should have a long service life unless you like throwing your leaf blower off the deck or something 😂

Just a little excitement to get the blood going. Check the dates on the fire extinguisher, and if it is a dry chemical, turn upside down and lightly hit the bottom with a rubber mallet. Dry powder extinguishers have one flaw- the powder settles and cakes when subject to vibrations long term. Once a month or so, pick up your extinguishers and give them a good turning upside down/ shaking. Odds are you'll feel the thump as the caked powder inside dislodges. For machinery like this with lots of oil and vibrations, I would consider foam extinbguisters. Also, you can't have too many/ too big an extinguisher!
