In this video we look back at the time our production crew filmed teens arriving at a maximum-security juvenile prison for their first day inside. From the prison van arriving, kids being unshackled after the transport, and the full intake process from start to finish, this video gives a never-before-seen look at what life is really like when teens enter prison on the first day inside.

Keep in mind these correctional officers know that they're being filmed and know this will be on the air and their supervisors will see it so of course they are going to be at their best behavior.

Normally the officers at intake are a different type of person than the officers bring them in and the officers once they get past this reception time. Right now you don’t want to freak them out also they are trying to find the ones that act out versus kids like this who are behaving now. Also these are child corrections not adult it’s much different than adult prisons

@@bxi1547yea but sometimes even minor crimes result in consequences you never could have imagined. I was pulled into juvenile probation when I was caught with a small metal pipe and some cannabis. I was placed onto probation had to take drug tests. I stopped smoking cannabis because it took too long to clear the body. Then summer rolled around and like all the previous summers i chose to stay out until 10 or 11. One day we had to go back to court to update the judge. My mother told the judge that I was staying out late. Now bear in mind I wasn’t committing any crimes or doing any drugs. All my drug tests came back negative. I explained to the that yes I was staying out a little late but I had a voracious thirst for knowledge and I would be coming home at an appropriate time when school began next week. Instead I was sent to a residential youth detention facility for nearly 3 months to “help me.” When I got back to school word had spread and I was called a crack head. So although I agree that people shouldn’t commit crimes that harm others. Sometimes kids wind up in these places that they absolutely do not belong. I was housed near individuals who had serious problems with impulse control and violence. My room mate was in there for beating his mother unconscious. Another individual stole a van drove it out into the woods and used it as a hang out. And what was I in there for? Possessing less than a gram and a small metal pipe. It’s crazy because it all happened over 21 years ago. And watching this brings up all the same fear and anxiety I felt back then. So did putting me in a residential unit help? No it just showed me I wasn’t really considered part of the family, that if I cause minor inconveniences I could easily be abandoned, and that although I hated being there I could handle myself while being incarcerated.

The sergeant seems like a good man but i think he was lying through his teeth for the camera. In other videos we see that fighting, debt dogging, and even rape is common in this facility so to tell the boy no these things aren’t a problem here seems like a deliberate lie.

The woman gave the example of “in the night if you fall and burst your head open we have someone here that can sew you back up”, that must have really scared the young boy because if they are locked in their cells at night, the only reason one would fall and get their head burst open is they are falling off that top bunk with no safety rail or their roommate is beating them up. Either way it must be a common enough occurrence for her to give that example. Those beds need safety rails!!!

For all you troublesome kids/teens out there reading. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. And never *EVER* joke/play around with the law. ⚖️ You'll lose everytime, trust me. After doing 2 months of probation and turning my life around at 15, quitting shoplifting, skipping multiple days of school, being disrespectful to my father and to authority figures. It's not worth throwing your future away. It worked out for me. I stayed in high school, graduated (2006) and now living the better life. Otherwise, that mugshot is gonna end up being your yearbook picture. 🖼️📖 *STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!!!* ✌🏻🎓🗞️

@stst77 - perhaps surprisingly, there are some kids who are sentenced to "Boys School" (which is the term used for kids getting sentenced to juvenile prison in Indiana) who have committed minor crimes. Some of there for drug use, etc. This prison houses a range of youth with many different types of offenses. And you are correct -- many sound like little kids. Matter of fact, many are. Appreciate you watching.

Perhaps because he got into trouble so many times the court decided that Juvenile Prison would be an appropriate place for treatment (the prison like experience can be used to warn boys that this is what you will probably get if you reoffend after you turn 18. I call it “constructive punitive treatment).

I worked in the system and some of the kids are good kids. They are abused and molested and people don’t believe them when they tell. I had a kid come in who shot his dad with a shotgun. I looked further into it and he had cried out and people just swept it under the rug. They are kids and they will tell stories but if they say something that serious it needs to be taken seriously.
