I think one of the reasons this movie was so iconic even though not resembling the original book at all is because they portray the first day of the zombie apocalypse, which is one of the most important moments in the genera. Most movies portray some days after or even years, but watching the day zero is what most people wanna see because it shows how our normal world turns into a fight for survival

it's sad to think how if you have kids and are in a life or death situation (like this movie), they'll probably get you killed or almost killed. This movie seems accurate in that way, as Connie- the youngest daughter, almost gets them all killed a few times throughout the movie.
@dartherus

Yeah, how annoying a small kid screaming 'my blanket'? is it me or is that an extremely entitled brat? I had a son and he had life death situation a lot of time due to a congenital life threatening disease. But he was serene and comforted his mother, instead of screaming like crazy during a crisis. His heart finally was repaired and he lives a happy life in college right now. But today he seems surprised when he sees spoiled children making huge tantrum for any trivial stuff.

@@dartherus damn, that's terrifying, I'm not a parent but I imagine that must of been scary for you. Mind if I ask what your son had? Asking out of curiosity as a nurse. Looking at it from the other way, suppose maybe it comes down to the child. I think the little girl was around 5 years old, plus the older sister getting out of her seat caused them to crash. As someone else pointed out, the dialogue felt a bit untealistic, don't know how many kids would react that way but wouldn't put it past young children to do something like that. I probably wouldn't as a kid, I was fairly mellow. I did some rotations in a pediatric rehab once, I met a lot of young children at odds against the world (very heartbreaking) but they were all calm and happy as can be. Glad your son is doing well now!

I enjoy when zombies are portrayed in a more realistic way like this. I like how these zombies have a true viral mentality. I doesn’t make sense for a virus evolved to control a host would simply eat other creatures. It would want to spread itself between hosts as quickly as possible, which means bite and infect a new host and move on, not sit there eating the new host. It’s why zombies in say The Walking Dead just don’t seem plausible as they swarm singular people and tear them apart. By that behaviour, the majority of zombies or Walkers would be completely incapacitated and just a few mobile.

i mean it's all just make believe, if something like a real virus that would turn us into super fast crazy dangerous psycho's it would still not lead to these scenario's for obvious reasons the power of the military is always extremely reduced in these movies, if the army really did need to use their full force against whole stadiums full of unarmed psycho's it still be over in a matter of minutes

Yeah, this movie was entertaining for a generic zombie action disaster flick but it's an insult to name it after such a fantastic, gripping book as the World War Z novel with pretty much zero things in common besides a global zombie pandemic. The book moves far too deliberately and focuses on geopolitics and dialogue too much to be done any justice by a two hour movie, however. I hope they reinvent it as a TV series some day and really take their time showing the gradual collapse of human civilization and humanity's eventual rebound to defeat the zombies.

This just fully shows panic purely in its editing and camera work. Flashes of people running, barely able to tell who’s being chased and who’s doing the chasing, shaky camera shots and quick confined closeups, your eyes couldn’t lock onto anything specific for longer than half a second, which is what puts you in that same degree of panic that the characters were feeling.

Fun fact: this scene wasn't filmed in Philly. It was filmed in Glasgow Scotland, and made to (kind of but not really) look like Center City Philadelphia. Though visually decent for a zombie action sequence, this film bore very little resemblance the the source material, namely Max Brooks' World War Z novel. The novel would be better adapted as a short run TV series rather than a full length film. Each chapter could be an episode in itself, following each character 10 years after the outbreak and flashing back to their experience leading up to and during the zombie outbreak.

How many preppers do you think live around a bunch of traffic in the middle of densely populated cities? I don't know any that will even go TO cities, but in the event they did, they all have guns and large vehicles. Even their kids usually have guns, as opposed to a spoiled attitude and a blanket. They have family values like that, which is why even if they don't PERSONALLY make it to a shelter, a good part of their family very well might. That alone would be worth the work, except for most of them, it isn't work. It's a hobby. I can think of worse things to survive an apocalypse than guys who like to build shit and take care of their families, like the people who made this movie. This FICTIONAL movie is more a lesson in that. What would useless people do?
