First Days Inside Juvenile Prison - Expectations & Demands

In this video we look back at our very first days filming inside a maximum-security juvenile prison. This footage marks the first time video cameras were ever allowed inside the prison, as we followed newly-hired Superintendent Mike Demsey during his first days on the job as he interacted with kids in lockup. Mike was hired to lead Pendleton Juvenile Prison after the prison had seen years of chaos and legal issues. As one of the largest juvenile prisons in the U.S. with over 400 male youth, Pendleton faced many challenges over the years for kids and staff alike.

I don’t understand why the one being assaulted is punished by being put in solitary confinement while staff KNOW he was assaulted and lets the assaulters go free. This only teaches the kids it’s okay to assault others and you deserve to be punished if you are a victim. It’s messed up!

They take noncitizens too which also surprised me. I know of someone who came from communist China and joined the military! After serving their time in the military it then allows them to get citizenship.

@@stst77upon completion of Basic Training. I found this out when I went to my son’s basic training graduation. The General announced how many graduates became citizens the very same day they graduated. They also said they had a graduate from China and Yemen. Imagine that

Is it helping the recidivism rate? If so, then great. If not, it's not working and needs to be readjusted.

@nancygodsey8312 - very good question. There isn't much statistical data on juvenile recidivism rates. The data that does exist isn't comforting--a high number of juveniles recidivate. That said, the juvenile courts are supposedly designed to take into account that kids brains aren't fully formed yet and kids have the capacity to change. Some states/facilities do a better job than others when it comes to effective programs and services.. We still have a long way to go, but at least we *have* seen some progress over the 25 years we've been doing this work. Thank you for your viewership and comment!

It's not a prison #1, IT'S CALLED A DETENTION CENTER..The average STAY IS 15 DAYS..... PUNISHMENT IS NOT THE MISSION STATEMENTS AND NO BACKGROUND IS Given FOR CONTEXT ON INDIVIDUAL RESIDENTS...GET REAL.....I WORKED IN A CENTER FOR 25 YEARS !

@johndonahue3509 - thank you for watchinbg. To clarify, this footage IS from inside a maximum-security juvenile prison run by the Dept. of Correction. We do have many videos inside juvenile detention centers, which as you say are different than prisons. This video, however, is from inside an actual prison. Kids who are here were sentenced to what's called "Boys School" in Indiana, which is the term for being sentenced to the Indiana Dept. of Correction juvenile facilities. The teens were not waived to the adult system so it's not adult prison, but it is a step beyond detention. As I'm sure you know, kids in detention are there prior to their court hearings. These teens had already been adjudicated and sent to juvenile prison. Hope that helps explain a bit better. Apologies we didn't do so in the video.

The juvenile system in all states never remains close these kids do the crime will do the time behind these walls the system either breaks them or makes them

How about the right size pants so the person doesn't have to keep pulling his pants up because they are falling down past his buttocks? That's not too much to ask for. Just a little simple dignity. Just let the clothes fall down to their ankles before someone notices that's too big. Come on now.

We went through thousands of pairs of clothes a year, all on the taxpayers dime...they ALSO get free Doctors care, free dental care, even root canals AND braces ON YOUR DIME..it's disgusting ...half.go on to adult prison eventually AND DON'T APPRECIATE SHIT ..gang bangers
