First Drive - John Deere B

A minor transmission fix and then we're off driving our freshly rebuilt 1949 John Deere B. The engine runs strong. Its nice to finally be able to see it move on its own power.

I cultivated our corn and beans in 1963 with one which was about a 1945. Ring gear on the flywheel and starter on the top of it. Battery wouldn’t hold a charge. I had to hand start it with a large channel lock pliers. I also had to unload the corn wagons. The tractor ran the elevator and lifted the wagon when enough weight was removed. I loved it!! The pan Seat had a big coil spring and a shock absorber.

Cool memory! I remember visiting my grandparents farm (my uncle was running it at that point) in the 80s and 90s. And riding on their JD 60. That tractor is still working.

I remember hauling corn with a 49 B in 1965. You could start out the load in 3rd gear then shift up to 5th and then 6th by carefully using the pulley brake. Then you were tearing along at about 10 mph with 100 bushels of ear corn.

Yeah, you could probably see the Oliver in the background of dune of those clips. I'm getting close to trying to start it. I finally figured out she carburetor issues I ran into with it. Stay tuned...

What kind of paint do you use for the B

We just use Van Sickle paint from the farm store. Desiree what people say, it's good durable paint and I think it looks really nice.
