HUGE MILESTONE!!!
After installing the new starter and making sure all the fuel lines, oil lines and all engine mounting bolts were checked, I got some fresh gas and got it started. It took a few tries for the fuel pump to fill the float bowls but she fired right up and ran smoothly.
With all new gaskets in the intake and exhaust, it sounds like new. So happy that it's running again!
Next video coming soon...a full reveal of the finished bike and a surprise to what I will be restoring next.
Stay tuned...

it’s a pity that I don’t know English well, but it’s very nice to see that there are still Virago lovers like me)

I didn't realize I could make my videos with closed captions (CC) and have KZfaq auto-translate. This video was been revised to have CC and translating has been done automatically. I hope the language you speak is in the list above.

After buying my 4th virago and watching this series I am loving the culture around these bikes and fixing them/restoring them. Cheers from North Dakota where not many of these bikes are found in great condition!

How I loved this starter motor back in the days ;) Your sounds and works way better than mine though

Thanks! That's an aftermarket one. I still want to rebuild the OEM one and put it back on but the kits are either crazy expensive (80% of a new AM part). Now that I have all the starter idler gears and clutch replaced, it fires right up with just a tap.

This whole journey you've made around the restoration of your bike is just flat out awesome! Not only is it super informative but the level of depth and how you explain things has helped me out so much!

Thank you so much for the nice comment. That's one of the biggest reasons why I love sharing this information. I've learned a LOT on this restoration too...a lot of "figuring it out" as I go along. I'll be doing another bike soon and I'll post that in the coming weeks.

@@KensWorldRestorations yes, the luggage rack has carried my sleeping bag several times, as well as a 1.25 gallon jug of gas when I had to take a long way home, with no gas station in sight. I need to do some work on my lady. If my plans pan out, I should be doing two road trips this year: a 5k mile one, and a 2k mile one.

Non-ethanol fuel is getting hard to find in the states as well. I've found that aviation fuel is a good alternative. Most mid-sized airports carry fuel. If the octane is too high, just add some Trufuel to the tank first. That'll knock it down a bit.

I think the US still has Rec-90 as the go-to, non-ethanol fuel in the US. Be cautious with AVGAS as it still contains small amounts of lead (100LL is dyed purple). I'll be ok using 10% during the riding months but the moment it goes into storage (anything more than a month) I'll drain the fuel and put my ethanol-free stuff in.

Great job. Which technique will you be using to balance the carbs: standard vacuum gauges or manometer?
@KensWorldRestorations
@KensWorldRestorations Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I already set them up and just checked them second time around. I made my own tool using vacuum gauges (video on my channel). With only two cylinders it's straightforward and pretty easy. I had to readjust the idle but that was about it.

Hi there I have a 1984 1000 same as yours and the bike was running fine now it has this issue we're the back cylinder cuts out not sure we're to start any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks

I had the same problem and for me (after I completely overhauled the carbs), it was the ignition coil wire, cap and plug. The cap was so worn out (there’s a 5k resistor in the cap that can break down). Also, the rear cylinder wire runs down the frame and along the top of the engine and often when the rubber breaks down, it arcs to the frame and you won’t get a proper spark to the spark plug. I have a whole video on this…check out my video on the ignition coil replacement. I replaced both and it went from backfiring and sputtering and losing power to running like a new bike.
