The restoration on the Virago is complete!!
It is running and moving under its own power and it looks and feels great.
All of the tasks that I wanted to do have been finished and the last of the small parts, the front left rubber foot rest, arrived from the UK last week. After 13 months of part-time work, I'm ready to put the bike back on the road and enjoy it.
A special thank you to all that have followed along, commented, offered suggestions and were there enjoying the journey with me.
I have another restoration project bike coming soon so turn the notifications on if you want to be the first to know about what my next plans are.

OMG, what a result. Been fun & educational watching your progress. Never seen such a thorough restoration by a non-professional big dollar outfit. I thought I was meticulous, but you are an extremist, which I admire. The hours you must have spent researching many of the techniques that you have developed independently & uniquely. Hats off to you for the skills & patience. You must be thrilled & proud

Wow!! Thanks for the kind words!! I love sharing the experience and yeah, a little OCD goes a long way in a project like this. There's a lot of reasons why I am this way but mostly it's to keep the memory alive. It's still hard for me to realize that bikes from the 80's are being considered "classic" - but it was a great time to be coming of age when the motorcycle industry was too. These bikes deserve the commitment.

Thanks!! Not perfect but close enough as I remember it. In fact I'd rather have some imperfections left so I won't be afraid to ride and enjoy it. I took your advice and left the tank as is - there's a few stone chips in the front that are hard to see since I was able to match the paint really closely with some nail polish. Otherwise, I can't wait to get the final starter issues sorted out and back on the road!!

Thanks soooo much!! It has been a lot of work but it’s also been a labour of love. It’s a great bike to have in my “collection” and certainly one that will also get ridden as much as I can. Hopefully you get yours where you want it soon too!!

Thanks so much! Really appreciate the kind words. The restoration was completely true to the original so all those “gold” bits were done as close to the original Yamaha OEM look. The tank, believe it or not, is completely original except for the emblems - they are OEM NOS but were missing and I was surprised to find them at CMSNL.

Wow..!!!!!! Amazing. Well Done, great job. I sumbled across your channel and spent a few hours watching your videos'. I love the "purist" aspect of your restoration, getting it all original. I bought a 1992 Virago 750 several years ago and got really lucky. Low miles, almost show room condition and 100% original. They're fun bikes to ride. Enjoy. Cheers.... from Windsor, Ontario.

Really appreciate the kind words!! It's been a great experience for me too. Keeping the memory alive is one thing but tearing it down and figuring out how it all works is really enlightening and certainly feels good to be able to break the bonds from having to go to a shop for just about any repairs now. New video coming soon and I'll get some riding videos in too. Take care.

Fantastic job! Labor of Love. Had to replace the "bendix" on mine as well. Really common, but was easy to fix -- aside from draining oil, removing cover, etc.

Yep...definitely a labor of love. I'd be insane if it was anything else. I did the ol' "shoulda-woulda-coulda" when it happened. I had the whole thing apart and I should have replaced everything at that time. Live and learn, I guess!!

I just discovered your channel with the Yam Starter Gear Repair . I didn't realise you'd restored it as well , it truly-is a World-Class Restoration . You could fund a lot of projects by targeting collectable-bikes , collectors pay top-dollar for restorations at this-level . Dave NZ

Wow!! Thanks Dave!! Thanks for all the wonderful comments - it's truly wonderful to be connected to people all over the world, sharing our love for the bike and helping each other keeping this great bikes going. I'm on my time off right now getting a lot of work done on the FZR1000 Genesis...with a little luck and some scraped knuckles, hopefully she'll be restored to its former glory as well.

I have enjoyed watching your techniques and attention to details while resorting your virago. Well done. As well, I like the video work. Would you be willing to share your camera setup?
@KensWorldRestorations
@KensWorldRestorations 11 ай бұрын
Sure! I’m not really good at this video thing but I have got some background in photography. My main camera is the iPhone 13 Pro and for some of the intros I’ve been shooting that with my Nikon D810. The iPhone does 4K but the Nikon doesn’t. I’ve been experimenting with different frame rates but settling in 30fps for the restoration videos. My D810 uses my 17-35mm f2.8 and a small box light and that’s it. For the road stuff I use a GoPro hero 8 black with a purple panda mic in my helmet.

Very nice.,.do you have any tips for cleaning up the fuse box cover where the flasher and oil light is buddie?
@KensWorldRestorations
@KensWorldRestorations Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Yes I do - I actually made a video on the controls that included the center fuse box cover. I used a small Dremel tool at very low speed with some plastic polish using the soft polishing Dremel wheels. I also use a small, short bristle paint brush with soap and water to get most of the grime out of the small cracks. Be careful as the silver finish is pretty delicate.

@KensWorld yes,I saw and liked that video but I was wondering if it was possible and how to get the metal nice again.,.love your video's man ,.any ideas?
@KensWorldRestorations
@KensWorldRestorations Жыл бұрын
@@rickspringfield3249 If you're talking about the plastic chrome cover, then best thing for that is a large, soft buffing wheel and some chrome polishing compound. But the center piece that has the colored lenses is molded silver but I think it is painted as well to give it that bright silver look. If it's damaged in any way, you might have to mask off the lenses and paint it depending on how good/bad the finish is.

As an virago xv1000 gold edition 1986 owner I am speechless about your works on this bike. Can you tell me where I can find the original silencers and those engine protectors? thank you
@KensWorldRestorations
@KensWorldRestorations 10 ай бұрын
Hi Claude! Thanks for the kind words. It's a real challenge trying to find parts for this thing. The OEM exhaust pipes are hard to find - I did find the front exhaust pipe (new old stock) from CMSNL but they're expensive. My muffler is original (still has the small dent). You will have to scrounge Kijiji, eBay and FB forums for a lot of parts and hope to find something worthy of value. The crash bars are everywhere and pretty easy to find - same thing, just look around the web for used ones. Mine had to be re-chromed and it wasn't cheap but they turned out beautiful.
