First-Ever 5G Connectivity from Space to Everyday Smartphones Achieved by AST SpaceMobile

Using the BlueWalker 3 test satellite and its 693-square-foot array - the largest such commercial telecommunications array in low Earth orbit - engineers at AST SpaceMobile made history on September 8, 2023, by demonstrating the first-ever 5G cellular connectivity from space directly to everyday smartphones. The company proved the feat using AT&T cellular spectrum in Maui, Hawaii, to make a voice call to Vodafone in Madrid, Spain. The call was facilitated by Nokia's network core. The company also recently achieved other firsts in space-based cellular broadband, an industry it pioneered: voice calls, 4G data downloads of more than 14 Mbps, and 4G video calls.
AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.

in order to enable it, the company needs to acquire approvals from the authorities of the country. Think of it like airspace. flights can only pass from it if they are granted approval by the country.

No, Starlink is doing the same thing. Starlink, with Tmobile and few other cell companies will be launching text from satellite in 2024, then voice next year, data the following.

@@npitzen215 Starlink is attempting* to do the same thing. Voice and data is far from 5G. OP is correct that no other company is close to the tech. However, Starlink's advantage is funding, which is AST's weakness. However, as the tech is proven at AST, it only seems imminent that funding should be announced at some point, such as with any of the 3 sources of non-dilutive quasi-governmental funding mentioned in AST's Q4 2023 earnings call a couple weeks ago.

I worry about technology assured to work in remote situations, but failing. I purchased a solar bank that doesn't really work. Anyways, i bet some people would just assume it will work & it possibly puts them in a bad situation. Also scary to rely solely on technology & some unforseen event happens, and all of it is destroyed.

Hi AST spacemobile; I appreciate your efforts, please implement or evaluate/consider to insert/implement a constallation of communications satallites into LEO without requirements of cellular mobile networks/towers when there is coverage. Basically; smartphones/tablets would be connected to satallites all the time in real time everywhere on earth & would work even in mines, ground floor apartments/under tunnels/under oceans/on air etc+ utterly works everywhere without requirements of terrestial cellular towers with direct connections to satallites always, anywhere on earth without switching/transitioning between terrestial cellular towers/networks and AST mobile satallites. I personally think/contemplate/believe this is feasible/possible. All the best to you. 🍓🌷 inertia ...

Why did it take over half a year from launch and deploy to demonstrate the first call?? I believe they are going to be acquired by Starlink within a couple years.
