I have the Gen 3 and use it while overlanding in the desert and back woods. It's been a game changer I can now make calls from anywhere. I only have it on when in camp for a hr or two at a time. So the power draw isn't a problem. I came across a couple in a broken down side by side in the middle of nowhere in the desert they couldn't get a phone service I popped out my starlink and in around 10 mins was able to get them help. Another thing I really like is I only pay for months that I use it. I can go out for a couple month trip then shut it off till the next time I go out. Not having to pay for when it's not in use.

Worthy of note. For a "backup" during a wide-spread internet outage, Starlink is a godsend. It is becoming increasingly more common for an entire city's internet, telephone, cellphone, and 4/5G data networks to go offline for 2 to 5 days, when some construction workers accidentally slice a fiber connection. When this happens, all services and modes of communication disappear, unless you know someone who has Starlink.

I got the Starlink Gen 3 dish in December. I've had the gen 1 dish for a couple of years. They gave me 2 months of free service for upgrading. Plus, they gave me the 150-foot internet cable for free. The new dish so far has given me faster speeds.

Meanwhile att treats customers like garbage who have been with them for over 20 years. We’re canceling ATT phone/internet after decades FINALLY after the actual physical line is broken somewhere between the neighborhood and box, but att says it’s fine. Lmao. We’re over it!!!!

I am using my Gen 2 in Southern Brazil. Speeds vary but today I am getting 150 mbps down and 17 mpbs up. More than good enough for me. I could get local internet at a much higher speed and at a significant cost reduction due to my work I am staying with the starlink for now. I too had to wait for the dongle to hook up my external routers and hubs. But it came pretty quick after ordering it even here in Brazil.

Chris, a fantastic overview and demo. Your videos get better and better each time. As someone dependent on Starlink, I thank you for taking the time to review Starlink and give your view of upgrades. I’m on v2 and overall very happy with the service, but I still hope to have a direct fiber connection some day and to use Starlink as a secondary source. I still don’t know if upgrading to gen3 is worth it.

No 1 TB limit for my area. Speeds have been fast and consistent. Snow melt setting will also affect power draw.

Some of my friends recently moved from Chesterfield, VA to Powhatan, VA. To help them get good Internet service, I installed for them the latest model of the Starlink Standard kit (Gen-3). I was pleased that it took only a week to arrive after it was ordered. This is my first time setting up the newest model for residential use, and I was happy with how easy it was to get up and running. It's still getting settled, but the speed has been excellent so far. It has ranged between 119 Mbps to 350 Mbps download and stays about 30 Mbps upload. After the snow melts, I'll mount it on an existing pole on their roof using a pole adapter they ordered from Starlink. To provide them with good coverage throughout their home I set up an Amazon eero router mesh network that is directly connected to the Starlink router. This new router from Starlink has two network ports built in, so it was easy to connect and works perfectly. It made it easy to provide Wifi for two TiVo televisions. They have never used TiVo before either. All in all, I'm very happy with this setup, and so are they.

this is false- all starlink dishes regardless of their generation don't use a motor to align themselves with a satellite. they use phased array beam steering with their radios/antennae to maintain beam forming and alignment. the motor is only used once when the dish is powered on. not sure whats backing up your claim of gen 2 being the goat

@TheZeeray That's bullshit. The the dish moves. It moves the most at first power up yes, and you'll notice for the next 72hrs it continues to move until it finds its optimal position. But after 2yrs of owning it, mine has moved several times.

@@crosses101 the only reason it would move is due to the orbits of the constellation and it will scan for an optimal position... but this is an old requirement from a time when the starlink constellation was still quite small and the orbital planes were few and far between globally. but again to address your claim of "maintaining best alignment with the satellite" this is not true, its a phased array beam that continuously points at a given satellite.

That's a step in a right direction for RV's and camping. I like that it's thinner and the kickstand should be enough for temporary mounting. It would be awesome if we could power the router/dish directly with 12V.

You could with the older ones, but it required some surgery as it had an internal AC power supply. However, this new one seems to use a DC barrel jack and an external supply. Should be super easy to find a 12v DC to whatever this needs DC adapter without needing to crack open the starling and solder your own connections to it now

no it isnt. dicking around with pointing sucks. I just throw my Gen2 on a pole and it points itself. none of this manual stuff thats annoying when you're trying to get setup, especially if its balls cold/hot/raining.

@@LowPriceEdition Yeah but also you still have to point it in a general direction and it's taking up to a day for it to point itself afterwards properly. It's fine if you stay somewhere for a week or two but sucks when you move daily. IMO when it comes to camping space and weight savings are worth more than automatic orienting.

Running the Gen3 with the router in bypass mode - UDM-SE as the router. The results have been mostly good. Time of day / day of the week will see dramatic variations in the performance in our area. You may wish to try Speedtests at different times - Sunday evening, for example.

I am being forced off of ATT as they are discontinuing the service we are on and I am going to Starlink. I already have Unify AC-Pro APs and I am considering getting the UDM-SE. Would you go this route again? Trying to decide what Ubiquiti router to go with as I will be using the Starlink router in bypass mode.

@@MyTechWebTV For me, the UDM-SE strikes a good balance between nerdy network control and ease of use. I also appreciate the unified environment for WAN and LAN activities, including my Unify APs. It isn't the cheapest solution but I like it very much. There is no special integration with the Starlink router - the Starlink router becomes a dumb interface, like a cable modem. The UDM-SE does give me a secondary, basic "health monitor" of the WAN connection. I also enjoy having a remote console at via Unify that allows me to see all of the router's activities. It's not cheap but it was the best choice for my situation.

I also appreciate the nerdy network control aspect. You stated that perfectly. Cost wasn’t my primary concern. I want stability and control. I hope the implementation goes well next week.

My home service is going on 2 1/2 years and I am very happy with the service. I have yet to lose service and average now 120 down. This beats all of the wind stream no service weekly problems. I work fro home. In the rv it's been a game changer !!!!

I have Starlink Gen1 here in a small farm that I have in Brazil, where there is no other decent option for internet connection. I am very happy with it, having speeds around 200Mbps. Crazy how expensive it is in USA. Here I pay around USD 50/month, taxes included (USD 36 without taxes).

After the power CO-OP got grants to pull fiber down my road and a competing company also put fiber down the road, I canceled my Starlink. I still have the beta Gen1 dish hanging off my house. I would like to see a comparison of speeds to see if the old dish gets the same service because it was a better design but more expensive to make. Also, the T-Mobile service is $50 with 100GB of normal speeds per month + taxes; if it were $30, I would be OK with having it as a backup as we work from home and homeschool.

I'm in that portion of the subscribers. Starlink or other Sat providers is really only option for Internet. I can get a cell signal that sits around -102 db or less, which translate to less than 1Mb and under. I just talked to someone wandering on my road and they said they were working for someone that was doing consulting with another company that got a grant to bring in Fiber to rural locations. Unfortunately in don't recall the ISP though. I'm not holding my breath though, if the unlikely event happens, probably wont be for aother 3 years. I"m currently using my Gen 1 dish plugged into a Fortinet Fortigate with Unifi stuff inside.

Love my Starlink ! I don't like the $150/month price, but it works awesome ! Since I put my dish on top of my RV, I will stay with my Gen2, as I don't want to keep climbing up the ladder to adjust, which sounds like you have to do with the Gen3

Actually, The Gen 3 might be better for DC power situations being that you can give the router DC @ whatever voltage it needs with no modifications needed to the router or dish itself.

Starlink came to win recently - our ISP disconnected our fibre while doing another install and I was able to throw up our camping gen2 Starlink in a few minutes so I could continue working from home. When I unpaused the dish we were only charged to our next billing cycle which was only a couple of days out from when I unpaused, so Starlink prorates. Those three days of Starlink ended up costing me $20. Worth every penny to keep us going.

A thought on Starlink as a backup ISP vs a cell based backup. One of the things that came out of areas with hurricanes is that large catastrophic storms like that will take down, or severely limit, the local cell connectivity. With Starlink as long as you have power via a generator, inverter or power station you will have an internet connection that is not dependent on local resources. Especially since the satellites with the 'space lasers' can link across to other parts of Starlink's network that are still operational.

Where I live starlink is the best option. No land lines run here, between service areas for cell towers so steady 0 bars on that front. Hughesnet (another sat service) was slow as can be since the dish had to be aimed at some tall ever greens along the edge of my property (60+ ft tall ones up a hill.). So that left me with starlink. Been pretty good with no real issues, even at night I can stream movies no problem.

@@TraciDoering-hw8hu Measure. Use smart sockets reprogrammed for 0.1W resolution at low power (15sec measuring time). Connect pulses from utility meter to counter to confirm the total, store and check stored data. I use homeassistant with esphome running on orange pi 3 lts. Every old switch, old accesspoint, provider router can eat as much as 10W. Replacing for example the switch reduced power draw to 0.7..1.3W dependeing on ports. Hungriest IT thing I had was PC with monitor, running for most of a day. 30W@idle + 20W screen. Replaced with used i5-7300 laptop which draws ~4W idling, ~8W playing video. It already paid for itself by lower electricity bill. You will find many things eating power doing nothing for you but only for energy seller's benefit.

I got an ad for Starlink in the mail and saw it as a sign to finally look into it as i had been considering using it as my primary home internet service, especially if i could get similar or better speeds for less than the $90ish a month i spend for 300mbps Spectrum cable service, which is the only terrestrial internet service available in my area, as ATT finally discontinued new DSL lines and my area hasnt gotten any fiber yet, and all of the 5G home internet isnt that great at my house because i dont get great cell reception here even though im in the middle of town basically. However, the upfront cost is what really put me off. $600 for the satellite and router is just nuts to me. If i went camping more often i would definitely invest in it for RV use. It is such a cool and interesting piece of tech, but the cost to benefit ratio just isnt there for me yet. Great video, hope to see more Starlink content when you set it up in your RV.

Great review, we are dependent on Starlink in a rural setting, our only other options are traditional satellite providers and they suck. If we lived in town we would definitely not mess with it and go with cable/broadband.

@@thoos192 That's dependent on who the fiber contractor was for the base satellites. If the fiber provider has poor contention ratios, the service will be useless.

I'm living off grid and I haven't built my house yet. My Gen 2 dish is literally just laying in the grass and I have a cable going up through the water hole in my RV. The problem I see with the Gen 3 dish is the wind speeds here. I've had 80mph winds and the Gen 2 stays put (almost 2 years now). Depending on what direction the wind is blowing, it looks like it would just pick that thing up.

I've modified my Gen 2 system to bypass the router so I can directly connect to my own. I also modified my system to run on a custom 12vDC to 48vDC POE (using Dishy Dually solution). I will also be modifying my terminal so that it can lay flat. No configuration is needed-- it just works. I think the next generation isn't as good because it requires being oriented and used more power. I'll be keeping my gen 2 unit.

Oh man.. Starlink is a game changer in my area. I had expensive and unreliable zippley. I live in Washington State, we've had heavy rain and heavy snow and haven't had any issues. It does slow a bit at the high usage times.

Thanks for the overview. I have a gen 2 and was getting ready to flat mount it on my van. I think I'll let SpaceX buy it back from me and upgrade to the gen 3. Seems way easier to adapt to a flat mount, urban situation while still maintaining the ability to have a better connection by popping it out when I'm outside the big cities.

Thankyou for the non bullshit information that I have been trying for months to find for our off grid set up. That 75 watts is a killer and is twice what our fridge uses so it is a lot of power and would take a 300 amp hour battery to run around the clock.

I do hope that they could implement (through updates) something like a low power mode (just like in mobile phones) that reduces the power usage by reducing some aspects in the starlink like wifi output power, and reduced internet speed specially if we aren't really needing the full bandiwidth.

This video answered basically all of my questions: Does the dish require separate power (no), do I need the ethernet dongle (no), can I get a longer cable (yes), what's the speed like (good). My only remaining question now is, how susceptible is the dish to wind if I put it on my (flat) roof?

Upgraded to the gen 3 from the 2nd gen. At the same time we switched from the RV mobile plan to a fixed location. Dish to satellite speed is about the same as before. The difference is I'm getting priority where the mobile wasn't. What I don't like is the mounting options, mine is mast mounted and the optional mount does not fit securely on the mast. I expect the wind will eventually take the dish off the mast.

Chris - another great video! Would love to hear your opinion when you have a chance to test the difference between this version and one of the prior versions of the dish with the built-in positioning motors. I use my dish in a very windy environment and feel the Gen3's position would move around too much and would need to be manually adjusted often. Can you also comment on the Gen3's mounting options and if there are any improvements or shortcomings?

According to the video, you can use the Gen 3 with the older pole-mounting adapters. Just use the rooftop mount for your type of house, and worry no more that the wind will overpower those tiny motors.

I live in the country in the middle of nowhere, the only internet in my area has speeds up to 3mbps so I think it’s worth a try for me

So you covered a lot of ground and the single most important factor for me is how many outages does your new dish get compared to a gen 1 or gen2 dishy? I mean it’s the outages more than the speed that make life difficult on Starlink particularly 2 second or more outages during video calls

I'm using long range 5G Wifi with Bell in Canada. The antenna is on a 45 foot tower and it can use up to 100 watts so I don't really think the power is to big a problem with the gen3 dish

On the starlink mesh can you run an ethernet between the two for better connection? I have tempted that before it didn't seem to work. I even tried using a point to point ubiquity between the units for better connection, but they still continue to drop. The range is very limited. This was an outdoor campground with a house and two guest quarters.

hi, and thanks for such great info in this vide !! Question, Starling says I would need a clear view of the northern sky. It looks like you are in a residential area and your dish was placed between the house and garage ? so even pointed north, I would think there would be some limited view. Do you think there is enough satellite connection even if the northern view is only a slice or not full ? I am wanting to order but there are some trees toward the north so the dish would not be able to have a view closer to the horizon, but it would be north but more upward. would this be enough for good wifi ? thanks !!

Starlink seems to be the right choice for me out here in the sticks. Currently I'm on super slow Hughes satellite, and recently fiber was ran out this way, BUT, it's pole mounted along with power and phone. It is a heavily wooded area and anytime we get a strong storm it invariably takes out utilities. I have a generator so in a power outage I can still run internet and lights. Landline phone may be out but cell over WiFi works as there is no cell service here due to mountains in the way.

QUESTION: What is it called when you want to use one of the mesh routers to create a wired connection to another network segment. ie. Incoming Internet -> wired to Mesh Router : wireless WiFi from Mesh : -> 2nd Mesh Router -> wired to Switch switch distributes by wire to multiple equipment I would call it Wireless Backhaul but not sure if this is the correct terminology. I need to find out which Mesh units offer the highest bandwidth over Wireless Backhaul and expected speeds Thx

Just yesterday my entire towns connection went down because a fire caused our only fibre optic cable to get destroyed. I wasn’t sure about starlink before that but now i think ill get it 😅

🤣 HughesNet is a joke - my next door neighbor HAD Hughes and I told him AT&T will give him 10X more bandwidth as we did a speedtest comparison for the same price point. Not only that, his setup used 7X more power from the outlet than my AT&T Netgear Nighthawk (MR6500) M6 Pro. He called HughesNet within a week and cancelled - he doesn't regret dropping their service.

I go camping alot at race tracks for race weekends. Most of the tracks i go to are in the middle of nowhere. Cell service is usually okay earlier in the weekend, but once more people show up, my cell service slows down almost to a halt. Would something like travlfi be a good option? Or is starlink my only option?

Where are you located and what speed did you get with the Gen1 dish? I live in northern Wisconsin, have a Gen1 dish, and am currently getting 60-80Mbps. That's up from the 35-ish I had been down to. Seemed like every time there was a launch for most of the last year, my speed would go down. I've never seen over 90.

I'm pretty impressed going to starlink I'm a new user coming from tmobile at home internet. 1. I have good signal for my 5g tmobile. I see little higher speeds down with tmobile but I see faster upload with starlink and also lower latency. Also I'm in middle of no where and sometimes the towers breakdown so I believe I will see better uptime from starlink.

You can also use your own router as AP by connecting to it's LAN port, and setting its IP to the same subnet as starlink router. I would also suggest to disable old routers DHCP in this case.

Can I just connect the dish rj45 cable to my own router ? Or just connect to my pc or server ? Of course I'll use the POE connector to supply power to the dish instead of StrarLink router.

Will this GEN three still function if it’s not pointed in an optimized direction or does it completely fail to turn on? It would be kind of nice to mount this to the back of my car hitch mounted cargo box, but a bit fiddly if I have to change a complete direction every time

Can you use a standard Ethernet cable between the dish and the router? I believe it is just an RJ45 cable. Albeit with some waterproofing.

Looking into this for our rv,we will be stationary. My questions are,if i have a playstation 5 console online player and want to stream Netflix and other apps on my smart tv's via wifi from starlink is this gonna work for us? Also on the gen 3 will it have the capability to aline ( move to line up) on it's own if it needed too? Or if being stationary it doesn't need to aline? Are you able to set a password so other people around you can't use your wifi? Still new to alot of this,at our home we have fiber,so this is all new.

I install Starlink for some of my customers along with other networking alternatives such as using Ubiquiti point-to-point antennas. My question is can I use the Starlink app for setup and then the customer put it on their phone to take over the system after I set it up?

I am curious about the power draw when in Bypass mode so it is not hosting WiFi... You also say that you plan to unpause when you are in an area with no LTE. Is it possible to go somewhere with no internet connectivity, set up Starlink, and unpause BEFORE you have an internet connection to log into the Starlink website ?

Gen 2 you can just bypass the router and not use it, I have mine plugged into a wifi router running on 12v in my Caravan , wonder if you can do the same with the new gen 3? Gen 2 required a starling to RJ45 adapter

Can you setup Starlink without your cellphone aka a cell phone signal? In other words if you are in an area with no cell coverage can you set up Starlink or do you need a cell signal to capture the correct signal location?
