I only learned about classic Tetris a few weeks ago, but the other day I was watching the CTWC 2018 "First to 19 Speedrun", and I immediately had whiplash when they referred to level 19 as the end of the game, when now it is merely "when things start getting interesting".

Think about this. The first transition lasts for 100 lines (130 to 229). Cheez just got more lines on the killscreen/thrillscreen (230 to 343). 114 to be exact.

@@GokuSon-ew3lm Back then, huff and Hydrant. I believe pokenerd had also switched to rolling in comp at that time already. Now ruins (Richy), has already claimed his spot in top 8 and holds 29 score wr and a 1.5. Tegamech and Mylesthegreat also roll. I still think hypertapping dominates in competitive, but that very much depends on what ruins and huff do on the 14th.

Two years ago when Joseph was making a mockery of the low 30s, we figured 40 had to be on the way. The sentiment was both ironic and unironic, as keeping that pace would have to be exhausting both physically and mentally. Now that the "physically" side of it is gone for rollers, the sky's the limit. Congratulations on this amazing milestone.

Yeah, joseph's fingers are still insane for what he accomplished on hypertapping, but now people who have mastered this genius technique can just treat it like DASers treat 19. ie, it's still super hard to play (most DASers never even make it to 29) but if you get good pieces and don't fuck up then it's an actual playable speed.

It's clear that there is essentially no upper time limit to Tetris. It may actually cause trouble for future tournaments...

WTF Cheez. Incredible work. Great job. Watching you do full on tetris, not just line by line survive, in post level 29 leads me to wondering about what the new viable high score will be. I have to imagine this is excruciating on your hands... but maybe rolling is nicer on your hands, more sustainable, than tapping? Have to imagine most competition games, at least anytime soon, will never have to go this far - imagine watching two people (which there aren't yet) fight each other into level 40 and 50. Madhouse. What are you doing to this game, man? And again, incredible flex here. Impossible without hours of training and creativity. Great job.

Cheez has said in the past that his hands pretty much never gets tired from rolling, so it’s way more sustainable than tapping.

The movement of tapping requires that you move your wrist up and down, while rolling simply needs you to tense your wrist a little to move 2 fingers up and down. Rolling is significantly less streneous than tapping.

People have already been optimizing 29 stacking. For cheez, it’s more like preventing misdrops because you can get away with a lot of unoptimal decisions with the speed of rolling

I have just started trying to master NES Tetris, and have just gotten used to DAS. Barely, I can clear lines on lvl 18 and I'm super excited about that. Then today I tried rolling, and it's clearly superior. I can move pieces on high levels at ease, hard to get the timing down right, but definitely the superior method.

Cheez I got a question. Do you think rolling one handed is at all viable? Like, hold your left thumb over the dpad, while rolling with your fingers on your left hand. And holding the controller and pressing AB with your right hand? Was curious on your thoughts on this. I got my first and only maxout a while ago on NES tetris, and have barely played since then. But if I could learn to roll, that would definitely be fun to do. And obviously help me play at a higher level. EDIT: I just saw that jerpidude does what I described. Very cool.

@@elpailtem7668 It works but it is a lot easier to two-frame taps. If you have two taps on frames next to eachother, it registers as you holding the button, so you have to go slower than 25hz to have your inputs register, and the limit on NTSC is 30hz

You would have to go by line count. There would be no actual "transition" speed would not change.

Man... Is time moving too fast or what? I'm sure there's more than a handful of people that remember the first video we got recommended (Boom! Tetris for Jeff!) and how Jonas was an absolute god (Rip 😢). Then Joseph came along and started obliterating records left right and centre. Doesn't feel like I have been gone for that long but I remember when he hit 35 and that seemed nearly impossible. Feels weird that someone other than him accomplished this, but then again it was a similar thing when Joseph first hit the scene taking down Jonas. There's too much internet to try to keep up with whilst trying to juggle life...
