Well, if you were rich in the 1800's you would have arsenic in your wallpaper. Arsenic was used as a color enhancer. Although it was marketed as a health tonic, used in soap, throat lozenges, and rat poison. It was also called inheritance powder. Basically, if you were rich your house was slowly poisoning you.

Dan wouldn't really be getting shat on (at least not at first), after all, we know that he isn't really a gamer, so the expectations are low (unlike Arin, who's been doing this for years and still has problems). I thought they were gonna play that cool motion-based marvel (not the comic company, but the metal spheres) that I saw being displayed on an iPad at a BestBuy in like 2006. This was back when iPads were new, and having the tablet react to you tilting it was demon magic. The game was about trying to move a marvel through a maze, and there were tubes that made the marvel grow and shrink, so you had to account for the size of the ball.

Blackout was created *during* World War Two. It was an attempt to remind people to keep their lights off during air raids. Also I know this was likely a honest mistake, so here's some some bonus info! You can tell they are planes from World War Two as they have one set of wings with a smoother design and no landing gear protruding from the bottom, whilst single pair winged planes existed during World War One, Biplanes and other planes of World War one had many wings and were far more common, and all designs from that period had protruding landing gear as far as I am aware. Just some little tips on identifying from someone who used to enjoy looking into planes as a kid!

I love these! I used to have a sliding puzzle that had numbers 1-8 in a 3x3 square, and it was sortof like a flat rubrics cube, you had to slide everything around to get it all in order with just the one free space. I also had a pigs in clover shaped game but it had a different theme. I loved this style of game growing up, I'm much better at a physical puzzle.

Dan: When are these games from? Arin: They were popular in the 1800s One of the games had fighter planes in it. The first "sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight" didn't happen until 1903 with the Wright Brothers' flights. And planes weren't used as weapons until World War I. I'm no great mathematician but I think 1903 came after the 1800s, Arin.

Regarding the Blackout game, my grandma would often tell me the story of her childhood where they (the whole town) would have to go through air raid drills. Basically when the sirens go off, everybody had to rush to turn out all of their house lights. The wealthier homes had black curtains they could pull down to accomplish the same without sitting in the dark. But it was all to effectively make the town invisible to enemy bombers, who relied entirely on visual recognition. Apparently there were even bridges that, even after dark, you were not to drive over unless your headlights were turned out, for the same purpose, since land transportation would be a major target in an air raid. Crazy times! That was always one of the more fascinating stories she would relate of growing up in the early 1900s.

Arin isn’t wrong in saying that these puzzle games were popular in the late 19th century, but it should be understood that that’s just when they *became* popular. Glass-top puzzles like these are still being produced in plastic! Though the height of the popularity was probably in the 1930s to 50s, and then it sort of fizzled out in the 1960s and 70s with the introduction of more exciting physical games, gaming arcades, and video games. R. Journet & Co for instance (pronounced ‘Journay’ btw) operated from 1891 until the late 1960s. That’s why some of the puzzles shown in the video are World War II themed. There was no aerial bombing in the 1880s, my friends.

Also this is just me being pedantic and That Obnoxious Historian, but there’s a reason why we tend to not say “the 1800s” when talking about a century. It’s because a century is a really long time and things change a lot! And the double noughts also make us think in particular about the *first decade* of a century. If I said “the backstreet boys were the most successful boyband of the 1900s” that sounds a bit weird, right? So if we don’t have a particular year or decade in mind and we still want to generalise a bit, it makes more sense to say things like early, mid, and late. Look at the 19th century: it began with America’s third ever presidential election (2nd president tho lol), and photography was just a dream. It ended with the commercial production of cars, and the advent of cinema! Kinda crazy when you think about it.
