Hi Kyle. Not having any luck getting part number for 12” dime tip carving bar .043 gage for Stihl MSA 160. Dealer and distributor couldn’t help.

Great Video Kyle, I would add only 1 thing, and that is a dust mask or respirator to wear when using anything besides the saws. A nose full of fine dust makes for a long sleepless night of not being able to breath well.

Good job explaining the 1/4 pitch sprockets. I just got into carving, luckily I already got 3 because I burn firewood. But, I can't get a 1/4 pitch for any of the small saws, the husky 435 and t540xp, but I can get a rim sprocket set up for my 455 rancher, but it be nicer to detail with the smaller saws. So definitely make sure you can find a 1/4 pitch sprocket for your saw before you buy the saw.
@justinhelsley5241
@justinhelsley5241 Жыл бұрын
I did find a 12" with 3/8 low profile that fits on the t540xp and that has really made a difference. I bet running the small 1/4 pitch .043 chain is really nice. Think I'm going to go with an electric for the smaller bar so I can do details in my shop, and a little more quiet for the neighbors.

Been carving a while, started knife then bought a Pfeil midsize set, then a Foredom and a couple HF copies, evolved into power carving (partial) and built up a nice burning pen setup, so I guess I'm going into chainsaw carving backwards, I have a lot of the tools (I've had a couple of usable Husky saws for years), but just bought a HF Jawhorse copy (I consider it to be an essential tool to chainsaw carve, it either belongs with the saws or as a safety item. Secure workhoiding is high on my list for good carving and safe carving. Anyway I just subbed (you're still at 8.06k, been watching you for a while but been lazy) and wish you a rapid trip to 10K. I agree on the Saburrtooth stuff, I have a few pieces and love them all. I have 2 of the 2"d x 3/4"w Buzzouts (Green and Yellow), and a yellow 2"d x1/4"wide 'saw'. These just rock on a Foredom tool, but be careful running them slow, they like to grab and require full attention. My other goto is a yellow 1" cylinder (end cutting version), super for smoothing and gentle shaping. (Edit - one word of advice if anyone is considering the 3/4" wide Buzzouts, they are solid steel and quite heavy and such are like a heavy flywheel. I don't think they would be good at full die grinder speeds and seem at their best about 3000rpm or until you see burning on hard spots. These speeds are nearly full throttle on my Foredom TX square drive, and the Buzzouts work well on my HF flex shaft tools, but with less authority, so they ARE a good match for those tools). If using a die grinder, I'd recommend a speed control or variable speed die grinder and forget air powered die grinders. Hope to try my 1st saw carving soon, need to decide what it's going to be and go looking for wood (I have some land with a lot of unmanaged trees and dead wood, so I should be able to find something to practice on. Thanks for helping get me moving toward opening another door to my hobby.

This comment ! Thanks man . Yeah I did forget to mention the Jawhorse 🤦🏻‍♂️. It really is an essential tool in safety. I’m happy to hear your getting into chainsaw carving! I will say this is how it seems to work for me also . I have all kinds of tools to create all kinds of stuff ..

I wasn't sold on it at first, because I did the typical thing and didn't read the instructions. Once I looked on the bottom and found the variable speed toggle switch it was much easier to use for detailing

Instead of chaps could I use my leather apron from when I do forging?
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t recommend that as a substitute. Chainsaw chaps have a fine string or fibers in them that bind the saw up and choke it out . I’m afraid the leather won’t do much

Hi Kyle...I'm over in the United Kingdom been following your carvings. I have a Jaw Horse imported from the States an MS170 fitted with the Cannon dime tip however the MS250 isn't available in the UK...do you know it the original bar, chain and sprocket off my MS170 will go straight onto the MS251 which is available in the UK ? Thanks in advance and keep that instruction coming I'm addicted to carving now 😂
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker Жыл бұрын
That’s awesome Steve . I’m not really sure about the 251 . If you can go to a dealer you could ask . If they are not sure maybe they could pull the chain cover off a 170 and a 251 and you could look and see if they look the same . The sprockets would look similar. They might tell you know that won’t work but I’m sure they have never tried .
@KyleHallwoodworker

After a quick google search it looks like they are very similar saws with only minor differences. My (Guess) is you would be able to swap them out but again it’s just a guess

@@KyleHallwoodworker Thanks appreciate your help. Local Stihl dealer here in UK wont help much he always says " just keep to cutting firewood there not for carving"...Have answerd the questions on your new beginners Facebook site and it says pending I hope its OK to join even though I'm in the UK....I'm a very very beginner so far I have only attempted a Pumpkin and a Mushroom...Bear in a stump is next project . Can't wait to start it. Once again thanks for your videos, help and advice 👍

Good video Kyle. I'm ordering my chaps today. I didn't want to look like a Goober wearing them, but I see you, Ryan Cook and Jordy always wearing them..so I guess Chaps are standard. I will be trying to win the DeWalt die grinder and bits. My Metabo is old and wore out.

Thanks for the nice video. I have collected storm wood I want to do some art with, so I am so glad I happened upon you by chance. What do you think of using a lighter weight battery chainsaw, for a woman? (& what size would you recommend?) Also, what about using angle grinder flap disks for the final step. I realize it is a different orientation, but I do have a supply of flap disks for an angle grinder that I've never tried yet. Thanks.

And what do you think of instead getting a pneumatic die grinder + air compressor?
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker Жыл бұрын
I prefer electric tools but the air compressor is nice to dust carvings off and your self after the day . Battery saws are nice . I block with the Stihl msa 220 and msa 200 then I have a msa160 with a dime tip bar for detail work

I'm not really a chainsaw carver, not much of a carver. I just grind away at chunks of wood every now and then. I been lookin to get a die grinder and I just keep lookin at them. Harbor freight, Dewalt, HF, Dew, decisions decisions. You tube won't let me sub twice. Maybe I can un-sub and then re-sub, but I don't think that will increase your numbers so I'll stay as it is.

I don’t really know much about it honestly. I just looked it up quick and see it has a 3/8 pitch . If it were me I would check with the dealer and see if Stihl offers a 1/4 pitch sprocket for that saw. I personally would want to be able to run a detail/ dime tip bar and possibly be able to swap to a regular 1/4 pitch bar
