Are hobby-level CNC machines everything they are cracked up to be? I picked up the Carbide 3D Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC machine to expand my woodworking offerings and to incorporate into my existing workflow. Is this machine worth the price tag?

I’ve had my 4x2 Shapeoko for a couple of months and I agree with you. For me it’s an opportunity to automate more mundane tasks - like making templates. It also motivates me to move more into CAD design, which I’ve wanted to do for a while. This machine has been super straightforward to get started with and when I’ve needed support the company has been extremely responsive. Two thumbs up!

That’s awesome! I feel like there’s so much potential that it’s hard to know where to start, let alone learning everything there is to know. Kind of wish I had gotten the 4x2, but I just finished flattening a 48x40 oak cookie that has been sitting around for a few years and it was nice just being able to throw it up into the machine and do it all at once

The idea of the VFD spindle kit in general is great but I have heard negative reviews about the one they offer as upgrade. Not sure if it's with the spindle or VFD but have you had any issues with it months later?

I have had no problems with the VFD spindle kit- I’m not running it day in and day out, but I’ve done some pretty big projects with it that the trim router would not have been able to handle. It’s so much quieter/smoother/more powerful than the trim router. I only wish there was an 85mm option that could handle 1/2 router bits!

Wow that's what I call a coincidence 🤪, i too bought the exact same cnc and the extra's you mentioned, also have ZERO experience in cnc etc. I'm possibly about 3 to 4 weeks behind you by the sound of thing's. I now need to either work out how to do the 4x4 bed flattening or try download a file to do it. Honestly if truth be told I'm a little bit nervous about the whole thing. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

Awesome! No lie, the first time I ran the table flattening file I had my Z set wrong and put the bit straight through to the bottom and into the aluminum channels. Live and learn!

You know what’s really cool? This right here- a brand with a positive comment on a video about another brand’s product.

Just got my machine too. Is it traditional woodworking? Nah. Is it woodworking? Sure! I'll be using mine to build guitars. Still learning Fusion 360, but I'll get there.

I love the way you put it. I started playing around with Fusion 360 but it’s a little difficult because I’m so used to Sketchup. Just like you said, we’ll get there. 💪

@@SpottedTongueWoodworking It's definitely a big learning curve, but something just clicked for me this week, and I'm finally making some progress. I've modeled a couple guitar bodies now, and I think I'm finally ready to try and cut some out. I just built a dedicated table for my machine, so I have to get it all wired back up.

Is it necessary to flatten the table? I have watched a few vides on this machine and nobody else had done that.

Maybe, maybe not? It’s a quick and easy step that will ensure the surface is parallel to the machine itself across the entire surface. I don’t see a reason why not to do it.

Is 100% needed. Others have done it they probably just didn’t show it.
