Well, if you're interested in outdoor museums with re-enactors in character, then Beamish Museum is the one to go for. And they've got a 1930s vintage fish and chip shop. Win win! 😀

Durham Cathedral is one of the most important buildings in Europe. Right at the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with the earliest ribbed vault in England and some suggestion that Islamic architects from the middle east were influential in its design. Most importantly, one of the most tranquil indoor spaces you will ever experience, simply an amazing place.

agreed, being local we've been going there every few weeks for 30 years, and there is always something new to see or learn. recently went to a Christmas play of the Christmas carol and a library tour of manuscripts from Bedes era... but mainly for the architecture and quiet peace... tranquil is the word CM

The Venerable Bede is known as the Father of English History, he was one of the early chroniclers of our history. He served in the monasteries of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow. Monkwearmouth was built by Benedict Biscop in 674, Bede served here from the age of 7. St.Peter’s church which is still standing is all that survives of the monastery that was raided by Vikings. Jarrow was built a few years after Monkwearmouth. The Lindisfarne Gospels which is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book was written by the monks on Holy Island. It spent many years on show at Durham Cathedral but now resides at the British library in London. There has been many petitions to return it to Durham.

Where to start? You need to see Tynemouth Priory, Lindisfarne (but don't forget to check the tide-tables!), Bamburgh, Beamish, Wirksworth Castle, the Roman Wall, Alnwick. The North East is packed with fascinating history and beautiful scenery, and the best part is that even most Brits don't know anything about it, so much of it is still quiet and unspoilt.

I am from Newcastle and I was lucky enough to do my degree at Durham. We found an amazing student apartment with an amazing view of the Cathedral, by the time we moved in the following year an enormous block of apartments had been built completely blocking our view. Regardless, good times in Durham. If you’re in the North East much longer, head into Northumberland where there are loads of stops, Alnwick, Amble, Seahouses, Bamburgh to name a few, then hop over the border into Scotland if you fancy it.

I suggest you visit the city of Chester, settled by the Roman's in 79ad. It has a nearly complete, roman wall around it, which you can walk around the whole city on. There is a Roman amphitheatre and, a two level shopping area called the Rows. Chester has a cathedral, a horse race track and a wonderful zoo. I think you would both love it. Chester can be reached by train from London quite easily, it's about 175 miles from London.

Thanks for bringing me fond memories of Durham market. I was last there in 1969, when I bought what I took to be a picture postcard in a lovely old frame for a few pence. When I got it back to the college where I was studying Art I dismantled the filthy frame, which looked as though it had spent decades in a small room with a coal fire, and discovered to my surprise and delight that the "postcard" turned out to be an exquisite small oil painting dated 1912 of a Northumbrian hill scene in winter. It still hangs in my home and reminds me of the many happy years spent in County Durham at that time!

I was literally in Durham and Newcastle just over a year ago, it’s a great old cathedral city with its pretty cobbled streets, like Lincoln but with that North Eastern vibe, with the chilly weather and the lovely accents. Also, this is one for 80s new wave fans, Prefab Sprout were born and raised in Durham pretty much. All those legendary 80s tunes, like When Love Breaks Down, Appetite, Bonny, Faron Young, Cars and Girls, King of Rock n Roll.

Durham is my home city. I've travelled to 30+ countries over 20 years but came home to marry and start a family. I live a 10 minute drive from the market square and spend time in the corner cafe outside the Cathedral... Café Dral it's called. The best view in the county is from a cliff edge at Nose's Point in small town of Seaham, only a short drive from Durham city. There's a famous picnic patch there at height and right by the edge of the sea, though it is much nicer in spring/summer. If you happen to still be in the area, be sure to check out some of our many castles. I'd recommend the 13th century Langley Castle for high tea and a walk across the Roman ruins of Hadrian's Wall. Enjoy your stay in the north. I hope our people have been good to you.

My lovely god-daughter as well. I celebrated her Congregation in the Cathedral when Bill Bryson was in his final year as the vice-chancellor.

Your son must be smart because the oxford, cambridge and Durham universities are the pinnacle of education in Britain and maybe the world. Those are incredibly prestigious universities.

If you're still around the North East, main sights that I would recommend are: Berwick-upon-Tweed; Lindisfarne; Bamburgh Castle; Hadrian's Wall; North Pennines; Blanchland; Auckland Project (Bishop Auckland)

The North East of England is packed with history from Roman times though to the industrial revolution next time Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland Castle route are a must. So happy you enjoyed the area I'm very proud to call home.

I find it so cute that you say “the” in front of things. The Durham Cathedral, The York Minster, when in the UK we don’t. It gives me a warm smile. But then your videos do tend to make me smile. I enjoy your gentle enthusiasm. And I share your love of cathedrals.

A new subscriber here, and the first video I see is my hometown. I have lived in Japan for the past 20 years, but it is great to see the old town. Loving the videos. Keep up the good work.

Glad you enjoyed Tynemouth! I was raised here and live in the area now. Longsands does wonderful fish and chips but there is so much more to the village as well. Definitely worth seeing in the summer for the beautiful beach!
