Hahaha love the roosters in the background😅 we lived in the Cayman Islands before Mexico and had tons of roosters living on our front lawn 🐓 🌴Todos Santos is another place we’ve never heard of - but it looks like the exact slow paced vibe we love🙌🏼 great, informative video👏🏼

Fun fact Laura that i dont know if you already know about both Baja Californias is that they didnt become states until the early 1950s, before that they were called Territories like in Canada. Which makes these two states the youngest of the country. Thats partly whey they are so different in culture.

I was there this time last year and the weather was cool. I took the most amazing cooking class at El Refugio! Great little coffee shops like Cafelix and Taller 17. One of the hotels downtown has an amazing rooftop bar, can’t remember the name but the sunsets are divine from there. One place I didn’t get to that I wanted to was The Green Room, it’s on the beach but might be a cruise for you.

Thanks so much for the tips! It's pretty cool here at the moment with a bit of cloud and some rain the last few days, but when the sun is out it's absolutely perfect! I'll add those spots to my list - so many places to eat and enjoy for such a small town!

We were there last year about this time. I'm sure there are a lot less tourists this year because the Canadians weren't able to drive down this year because of the US/Canadian border closed. It felt very touristy last year. We really liked the town. Make sure you eat and get a margarita across the street from Hotel California at Tequila's Sunrise Bar & Grill.

I am surprised that you had no idea of the layout of the town when all that is available on Google Maps and Google Street View. I am writing this from my apartment in the north of Portugal and looking out on a typical winter day with a high of around 10º and a low of -4º. I guess when winter comes around here I start to dream of Mexico, a place that I lived in for quite a bit way back in the Sixties and Seventies, when I taught English and generally just took advantage of the cheap cost of living and safety (at that time) of the country. I have to admit though that Baja California is not a place that ever attracted me. Maybe it is because I lived in Arizona and was tired of the desert. I enjoy more the coastline of Nayarit and the interior too. San Blas is a place that left a positive impression. From what I have read, it hasn't yet been destroyed by tourism. Here in Portugal we have the advantage of safety, a modern infrastructure, and most importantly, proximity to so many places in Europe, including Spain, which is just 10 kilometers from my house. What we don't have are the happy people, the incredible and varied food, the equally happy music (Fado is not a happy genre), the lush tropical vegetation, and the warm water beaches.
@laura-bronner

I find that google maps doesn’t tend to give great information about layout, at least for Mexico in my experience. Portugal sounds lovely, it’s a place I’ve never been. I’d always heard the food was pretty good, interesting to hear otherwise! I love Nayarit as well, it’s such an underrated state with seriously beautiful beaches

Interesting perspective Ray. I lived in Germany for 14 years so I understand the joys of easy travel all around Europe. Recently I took trips to Lisbon and Greece because I had somehow missed those two places while over there. I expected to be enchanted by Portugal, but found the people, at least in Lisbon, to be very insular and not particularly friendly. I can’t say I ate anything that left an impression either except the pastel de nata( that I gorged on, hehe). I do love fado, but happy music it is not! I felt similarly about Greece...though the islands were stunning and I couldn’t get enough of the yoghurt with honey and walnuts. The people were a bit rough and not particularly warm and friendly. So in conclusion..give me Mexico with it’s warm, welcoming and lively people, it’s color, music, dance, culture and it’s infinitely awesome food. I’ll be spending half of my year there as soon as this pandemic is over. At least that’s my plan....

you should try spending the winter in Canada and then tell me if you still have complaints about Portugal.

@@ltdodgen your description of the people in Portugal and Greece can also be said of the people everywhere in Europe to be honest. Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Austria...it's all the same. Europe is expensive, the economy has taken a hit, good jobs are scarce and immigration has become a problem that the locals don't want to deal with anymore. I've been to many parts of Europe and I found the Italians to have the worst attitude. I think people will have bad experiences anywhere, including Mexico.
@ltdodgen
@ltdodgen 3 жыл бұрын
@@sashachip I can only speak from my experience and that's what I found. I have never experienced that attitude in Mexico. Sure, there's the odd unfriendly, unhelpful person, but in general the people are warm and friendly. I agree that I detected an air of arrogance in Italy and France, perhaps towards Americans ....I don't know. But, like I said, I'm speaking in generalities and from my experiences which is all I can do.

occasionally. it is good to disconnect from the silly cars. A bicycle is still the youthful spirit of adults. When you experience the relaxation power of a recumbent bike. You will feel that you have been wasting your time, like a slave to a car. I have 2 cars here in the USA. I only use them for errands. since everything is far away. In Mexico. the little shops on the corner. It is your food cellar

Check out “Santos Chilotes” for great fish tacos at a reasonable price. It’s at the corner of where Highway 19 bends, a block down from the Hotel California. Also known as Avenida Benito Juárez, across from his scowling monument.

Thanks for your videos! Really appreciate being able to experience places in Mexico with you. Planning to come to Todos Santos in a couple weeks. So excited. Can you comment on food safety in TS and the area? We know all the basics and will be prudent but due to immune system issues, I cannot afford to acquire big doses of new parasites or bacteria on this trip! Will be staying in Airbnb so can do some of our own cooking. Thanks! if you want to be in touch privately, let me know how I can contact you.

125 dollars for a used bike is a ripoff. The town looks really nice. That is the Mexico that I like. When we lived there we lived among the people and never went to American tourist traps. I don't know if you knew Spanish before going to Mexico but it certainly helps. I had studied four years in high school but really couldn't speak a word. I did know the grammar. When I first went to Mexico in 1964 it was to Guaymas and Mazatlán. When I came back after one month, I went to my high school and tried to have a conversation with my old Spanish teacher. Sadly I discovered that he could not speak Spanish. None of us at the time ever knew that or probably even cared. I am confident that foreign language teaching has improved in the US since those days. Has it?

Ray VogensenBicycles can be expensive or cheap. Here in usa. Yesterday I bought a new one at a discount at $ 49. But I have seen some used ones of more than 2 thousand dollars. it all depends on the brand and the material. Anyway. It's an investment. When you can, you sell it at the same price or less. But you don't lose anything

You'd expect the Pacific coast of Baja (norte o sur) to have plenty of beaches, especially if you're accustomed to the Mexican Pacific coast from Mazatlán south through el Bajío and beyond, but it doesn't, because of the terrain. The mountains come right up to the coast, there are very few natural bays, and the surf is fairly unsafe for swimming. If these weren't enough, the adjacent inland area is skinny and not productive enough to support developed beachy tourism, even if there were good spots for it. Which there aren't. Nice place to visit and very nice people, of course, but Baja has inhospitable terrain, como la luna. If Baja Pacifico were gonna become more desirable, it already would be.
@laura-bronner
@laura-bronner 3 жыл бұрын
There's something I quite like about that, something that makes me want to explore it, who doesn't want to see the moon? I also like that for once, mother nature wins, so beachgoers have to head elsewhere haha

Todos Santos has some of the most beautiful beaches i've ever seen. Balandra and the beaches of Espiritu Santo, both just outside La Paz, are incredible. Ventana, Los Barriles, Cabo Pulmo...these areas all have amazing beaches. I don't really understand what you define as 'desirable' but Todos Santos, Los Barriles and Cabo San Lucas are very popular with Canadian and American tourists and all have a very large ex-pat community. I personally found the desert landscape to be a major draw, as have many others. Hot and dry days with cool evenings. No need to sleep with A/C blasted, no suffocating humidity, fewer tropical storms than Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Mexico. Lots of reasons to love Baja California Sur.

@@LouQuilliogulf side? I think you are confusing the Gulf of Mexico with the Sea of Cortez. I understand what you are saying but I think you are also comparing the beaches on the Pacific side of BCS to those of mainland Mexico's more popular tourist towns such as Sayulita, Puerto Vallarta, etc. The beaches near Todos Santos are not as developed but some people actually prefer that. Ask most surfers and they will tell you the beaches along BCS pacific coast are awesome BECAUSE of their raw and undeveloped nature, not in spite of. You don't have to deal with people trying to sell you useless crap every 20min while you're just trying to enjoy a day at the beach. There are many positives to these beaches. The mountain biking and dirt biking nearby are also amazing- far better than in most places on Mexico's mainland Pacific coast. It really depends on what you are looking for but it is a very desirable area for many people- to say otherwise is just wrong.
@LouQuillio
@LouQuillio 3 жыл бұрын
@@sashachip Not confused. In English, the Sea of Cortés is more often called the Gulf of California. I have also not said that the Pacific side of BCS is undesirable, merely that it may not be what first-time visitors expect.
