@@wonderwonder30 I purchased the wire shelves from Wal-Mart and use cheap placemats to stabilize. I could fit one on my dining room wall and one in my walk in closet. It's a little tight, but worth it in my opinion.

Your mention of not realizing the difference between shelling peas and sweet peas brought back a memory from years ago when I was planting my first Garden. I thought sweet peas sounded wonderful. Eventually I realized I had planted the flower Sweet Pea not the Pea Sweet Pea

@@tanasarahdesign3781 Yes she was talking about the two kinds of peas to eat not the flower. One with a shell that is tough and one with the shell you can eat.

@@tanasarahdesign3781 idk where you live, but in the US we often refer to garden peas as "sweet peas" or "English peas". If you purchase peas in the store, they are often labeled as "sweet peas"... but those are the kind you shell, so I think Becky meant that she is growing Snow Peas (tender pods with very small peas inside) and Snap Peas (larger edible pods with large peas inside)

Hi Becky! A warning on St Johns Wart, it's got lots of benefits but can also interact with a whole bunch of medicine including birth control, antidepressants and antibiotics. It's widely discouraged in the UK but I don't know what the recommendation is in the US

I agree Liberty Hoy. Im a nurse here in Texas and we see this alot on medication lists. More often than not, we end up telling people on antidepressants and antibiotics not to take this supplement. There are a ton of meds it interacts with. Just be informed and ask your doctor first.

It can also make you sensitive to light, so you get sunburnt more easily. Just because something is "natural" does not mean it is harmless 😅 (German pharmacist here, I'm in a love/hate-relationship with St John's wort 😅)

In small dosages it is ok to use even though you are on those medications, that’s why herbalist recommend using a tincture instead of taking the capsules. It’s really good to use in salve if you’re worried about the interactions.

Hi Becky! I've been harvesting and eating my garden vegies too! So rewarding! A quick suggestion, I did this and it made me very happy. Since your moving ,literally dig up half your mint and oregano in a big clump, and bring them with you! Even if you don't know where they will go, make a small area that you can later dig up and place in new garden later! This includes any flowers,plants and trees. Bringing that hard work with you and still leaving some behind is a great feeling seeing part of your original plants are in your new yard/garden. I always look forward to your videos!

I know with mint if you divide it and take some out, the remaining mint will fill that spot really quickly!! I'm sure oregano is the same. So your house's new owners might not even notice that you took a clump!

Here's a tip to help when you're picking several types of small food stuffs...my grandparents always put an ice cream bucket with a handle on belt around their waist while picking small items to free up both hands. I've always found it very helpful. Watching you pick the peas and flowers brought back the memory. Hope this helps you or others.

Make sure you take starts of your perennial herbs and flowers so you aren't starting completely over. It will give you a bit of a head start. Love your videos by the way!

Agreed! You can grab some oregano by the roots and replant it at the new house. I did that this year it was super easy!

You have that big sun room now. Lay your harvest on sheets in the Sun room to dry. No bugs! You can uproot your herbs and place in old pillowcases to transplant to the new place!

I' having a bumper crop of tomatoes and had to process about two gallons of pasta sauce yesterday. I am disabled and standing for the length of time to blanch, peel and chop them was a huge pain in the leg. I was able to cook and can the sauce by 10 pm. I way overdid it though. Your harvest is so great! My husband says we're running a salad bar for the bugs!

yo Clark. I know exactly how you feel. I can’t stand up for long either and if I do I really pay for it later. My Mum has the same problem so we have put one of those shower stools that you use for disabled people. It doesn’t take up as much room as a chair and we can sit for a few minutes throughout the cooking process. Also if I have to stir anything on the stove I sit on the stool in front of the stove. It makes a big difference. We also put up a small camp folding table and we sit in our folding chairs on either side and we can cut, peel, bag etc for hours because we are sitting and the table is perfect height. There is no way we can stand up at the higher bench. Maybe take all your utensils and supplies to the dining room table. Anyway I hope that helps. Just knowing someone else understands … we just have to find new ways to continue doing everything that we used to not even think about. Take care, Love and hugs from Australia ❤️❤️🐨❤️ ❤️🌻

Go for it! We have a yard, but have had some construction projects so everything was in pots or thise grow bags (you could even use potato sacks). Had issues with soil, but happy to have veghies throughout tge summer. Even did edible flowers!

Becky, I really needed to hear your message today. I have had so much pest damage to my squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and melons. We have harvested a little but I've had to toss so much. Some times when you show a flower I find interesting I have to look up what the flower is called here in Denmark. Today it was the Strawflowers. The are so beautyfull. In danish they are called Evighedsblomster (Forever flowers) directly translated 😊

I believe you can easily propagate your oregano in water. Strip about 3 inches of leaves from each stem and put it in filtered water (chlorine will inhibit growth) and watch it root. Transplant and you’ve got oregano from your last home in your new one. ♥️

Just as my garden started taking off and looking beautiful, days before our yearly 4th of July - firework party, our steer got loose and spent the night in my garden. I like how you say you plant for the bunnies, birds and slugs and hopefully something is left. I may steal the sentiment however I hope I never have to plant for a cow again! 🤣

St. John’s wort very bad for stock. Makes them sick and sunburn badly and blister. Touching the plant can give reactions.

Hi Becky! I just started watching your videos a few months ago it’s been so nice to follow your garden and harvest. You mentioned your strike rate with carrots was really poor. I’m in New Zealand but I imagine this process would work any where. When you plant your carrot seeds pour boiling water over where you have planted. This helps to scarify your seeds (remove layers) and helps speed up the germination process. Carrots also require a consistently moist bed so keeping them watered helps. This is something I learnt from my husbands grandfather who was a keen gardener and it has never failed me, I have always had such incredible germination and growth by using the boiling water. Which be interested to see if it works for you 🙂

On cauliflower: you can bundle the leaves up at top of the head and then wrap with a postal rubber band. Protection from sun and a little larger heads. Check out on the Veggie Boys channel. 😊

I used some scrap pieces of chicken wire fence and just arched it over my beans to keep the rabbits off them. Nothing fancy, just bent over the little plants.

Another thing you can do to make sure that you have St Johns wort is to rub a flower bud between your fingers. It will stain your fingers in a blue/red colour.

Cut a few extra oregano/mint stems and root them to take to your new place. Have a couple semi established container plants to bring to your new home.

Becky, that was a very encouraging thought about just getting the seeds in the ground. I want to wait until the soil is perfect and the beds look nice but many times, I never end up planting. This year I'll go with your thought, there is NO chance if the stays in the package. God Bless.

That is such a good thing to remember! I often get discouraged by the amount of weeds that are in my garden. I have to keep reminding myself that I can still grow a ton of food even among the weeds, it doesn't have to be perfect or even pretty haha. (although I do like when it looks pretty haha)

🙋♀️Tip: I water-salt home grown cauliflower in a tub outside so all the earwigs and bugs/slugs can migrate back into the garden and not up my kitchen cabinets. 👍🏻😃

Strawflowers and statis you can cut them off and tie them together upside down great for dry floral arrangement and wreaths lasts a long time.

Great video's. I love your honesty. If you leave a radish to keep growing it will bolt and give some nice flowers for the bee's and then it gives pods that are edible when small. The pods are peppery and nice when eaten raw or dipping. If you let the pods keep growing they produce tons of seeds. Thank you for the hard work you put into your video's.

In case you want to know, those little bulbs at the bottom of the elephant garlic are corms, not seeds. Garlic and elephant garlic have 3 different A-sexual forms of reproduction which are basically clones (cloves, corms, & bulbils). Sexual reproduction is true seeds which look like extra small onion seeds. Both bulbils and flowers (for seed) form on the umbil at the end of the scape. Bulbils (also plantable) are like really small bulbs and often choke out the flowers before they can form seeds. You can get past it if you really have the interest and patience. Why would you? Seeds are where the genetics are to be able acclimate to your garden.

For anyone who enjoys this channel I would thoroughly recommend a similar one called Our Small Footprint. The lady is based in Queensland, Australia, lives in an off grid homestead with her partner, six kids, dogs, chickens, ducks and pigs. Their diet is largely dairy-free, she has a garden, shops only once per month, does canning and preserving, she is a superb cook, and her channel is absolutely fascinating, especially if you are interested in life in other countries. I would absolutely love to see her channel grow in the way that Becky’s has!

St Johns has tiny holes in the leaves if you hold it up to the sun. That’s the best way to tell the “real deal” from the look-a-likes!

After your videos I always feel like I can garden and meal prep because you don’t except us or you to do things perfect or hide that something didn’t work out. You show your plants that go to seed and you make it all work for you;

I could watch your gardening videos all day long! I am approaching 60, my father was a master gardener, I come from 4 generations of canners but I love what you plant , harvest and preserve. My father made sure there was never a single weed in his gardens. Ever. I like your way so much better. Thank you so much!

I'm so jealous of your climate. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and we don't even start planting until about mid June after what we hope is the last frost

Me too! I'm in Yukon, beside Alaska, so it's lots of greenhouses and only hardy things get planted outside. On a positive note though, we have almost 24 hour sun all summer, so things grow quickly.

I listened to your video on my way home from work and knew I had to harvest a bunch of food when I got home. I got so giddy to get home and get everything collected because of your video. I ended up getting 6 zucchini, 2 cucumbers to pickle, and a bunch of broccolini. So excited for the rest to come in! Enjoy!

I love your philosophy on continuing to plant throughout the season. I'm doing that too. I've had a few "busts" but as long as I keep replanting I feel like I will get something! I've already got the seeds so it only costs me my time and effort, which I'm happy to give! ❤

An amazing 'haul' indeed, all grown by you. I am so envious yet happy for you!! You are deservedly prowed. A tip yournext harvest. Baskets are cute but they are not doing much for you. Bowls and buckets are better, particularly if you fill them up with some fresh water. It prevents everything from wilting and in the case of herbs and greens, it actually improves their texture. You're going to be washing most of this stuff anyway once inside, so just get them started when you're outside, and then you're not rushing against the clock, to be done before they wilt in you. Caveat: obviously do not put into water anything you're going to cure. But otherwise, most veggies, fruit and greens benefit from meeting eater immidiately when harvested

Thank you Becky for that encouraging talk! I’ve been a little discouraged because my garden has not produced as much as it has in the past. The heat started way earlier than my area is use to and it hasn’t really let up but maybe a few days here and there. I have had to pull up dead plants since they are done and I really need to plant more things but just figure it’s not worth planting more. Then you give that very encouraging talk after planting more beans and well your right, if you don’t plant, then nothing will grow. It’s better to plant and get a few than not to plant at all. This is why I love your channel. Thank you!

This is a wonderful harvest video! I noticed that you had foxglove near your St. John’s Wart. While it’s not strictly poisonous it’s always good to be careful because if their roots intertwine there could be issues with ingesting the harvested plant.

Dig up a large chunk of that oregano and mint and transplant it into your new garden. Even if it’s in pots for the time being until you can find a good place in your garden…

I love your videos! Got me out planting for the 1st time ever 🥰 I get that same anxiety feeling that nothing will come up but then I remember how much I enjoy doing it so if nothing comes up at least I had fun and learned something and tried something I never thought I would/could do so a big thank you. Ps I also suffer from bad seizures very often and the destress from the gardening I think helps so win all around!

Hi Becky, don't get down, I think that your garden is doing great! No garden is perfect and I think that some years you may totally loose a crop and reap lots of others, so don't get too down on yourself.
