I was so confused when I first heard this group on the radio. The guitarist from Yes... why is he playing with Carl Palmer ? Both of their styles are so distinctive it was unmistakable. PS Their live video concert: Asia in Asia was broadcast live on MTV on my 30th birthday from Japan. What a night. Another ASIA song? All of them.

Asia was one of favorite bands that band out of the 80s. When John Wetton left before their Asian tour, and was replaced by Greg Emerson of Emerson lake and Palmer, I thought the band was over. Wetton helped to write each song on the album, and his vocals were second to none. He was really what made the band for me But Wetton came back for the second album; Alpha, and we got such great songs as "Go" and "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes". Both album for me; where ones I could listen to from beginning to end; something only a few album did. Still do; actually. More often then not; I only like one or two songs from any artists an l albums. By the time Astra came out; guitarist Steve Howe left the band. John Wetton would do one more album; Now and Then, before leaving to go solo. Geoffrey Downes remained, and pushed the band forward, but never reached the success the original band did. John Wetton put out my favorite album from him; Battle Line, with the title track being the best song on the album. I want to go back to some find, the innocent days and I left behind. I still believe they're holding ground, behind the battle lines. If it takes a miles over land and see, gonna swim through the river of purity, I know they still run free... behind the Battle lines

Nice reaction! A great song. I believe Asia released this album a year before Yes released 90125. I loved both bands in the 80s. They just evolved and moved from prog rock into prog pop. I was just happy for their success in that period and the fact they attracted new fans who may not have heard of their earlier music before. Great musicians make great music.

Your comments are spot on. The lyrics are tremendous with its share of hooks but there are several well-turned phrases ("the brightest ring around the moon / will darken when I die" for one example). But it's the incredible vocals that sell it.

I can listen to this song again and again and again and listen to it as an ensemble, or dissect it and study individual melodies. The opening keyboard riff is an epic sounding wail of loneliness and despair and pain. John Wetton bringing actual emotion to the lyrics, where you can feel how dismayed and angry and hurt he is. Steve Howe's repeated riffs sounding out "it's in your eyes" and "there's no disguising it." Carl Palmer's masterful drumming, including kettle drums. If you've ever been fucked over and dumped by someone you love, THIS is the song to play.

Thank you for doing this song. The entire album is incredible. I particularly like "Time Again" and "Cutting It Fine". The latter has an incredible synthesizer solo at the end. I personally loved all of the songs from their first two albums, which was with the original line-up. Mandy Meyer from Krokus replaced Steve Howe on the third album which resulted in a more metal type edge on a lot of songs.

Love ASIA. They are something special. While the band has created it's own sound, for me, it is actually a perfect combination of it's separate members. It's as if Jeff and Steve were just plucked straight from a YES song, John from King Crimson and Carl right from ELP, yet each part works with the others to create something new, but they are still seperate/ Go back to listen to each band they are from, you'll hear each member from ASIA clearly, as they are. It's remarkable.

What's so special about a bunch of magnificent Prog musicians getting together to form a MOR band with the soul aim of gaining huge radio exposure, and selling millions of albums? Hard to believe these guys were responsible for the brilliance of 'Lark's Tongues In Aspic', 'Close To The Edge' and 'Brain Salad Surgery' to name but three. Talk about dumbing down all in the name of Mammon!

This line up were drawn together with a desire to ‘make more accessible music’ . I think Carl Palmer said that. They’d all made lots of money from their own prog bands, so it must have been a more ‘easy’ challenge? Who knows. But Wetton’s vox is spot on as is everything else. They did it, reached a huge more mainstream audience and enjoyed touring it. Experienced talent proves a point. I’m a fan of their original bands and hats off to them £££££££

Asia is one of the few "supergroups" that, with constant line-up changes and various brakes, have lasted for a very long time (until today?). I think I bought the first 3 albums back then. These are all musicians who "get it" and make rock-solid good music, but the bands rarely really develop their own character. That's why I didn't follow the development of Asia after that. The thing about certain songs that hook you right away is that the hook gets old real quick. Such was the case for a lot of Asia songs. Sounded good initially but rock radio ran them straight into the ground. They got old for me real fast, and I suspect a lot of other people as well. Also they were a little over the top dramatically in their songs. The whole style became a bit cliche in the end. Trapped forever in the '80s. Fun to revisit though. "Heat of the Moment" was another big one of theirs.
