Outwardly, the song is based on "Alice in Wonderland". Alice, the main character of this story, falls down a rabbit hole where she finds cakes, upon eating one she becomes very tall, then she eats another and becomes very small, then she meets various creatures. But obviously this song is about drugs as well, in line with the flower-power trend of the time.

That was jefferson airplane, that song was in reference to Alice in wonderland. Alice is referring to LSD and the trip you'd have on LSD. Certainly a classic.

Actually, a lot of songs were way longer back then. "Hey Jude" was an over 7 minute song that went to #1. For years, rock radio stations would play all 22 minutes of "Alice's Restaurant" every Thanksgiving. This one just happens to be short. (It's also a ripoff of a short classical piece, "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel, which is a much greater piece of music.)
