Grace Slick wrote this song. It is a description of ALICE IN WONDERLAND with a psychedelic twist. It is easier to understand the song after a few deep tokes. This is back in the 1960s and LSD was passed around like party favors.

@@rogeroran2911 there is no evidence that it was an opium dream, or anything at all to do with drugs. He had a brain malady, a form of epilepsy, that created bizarre hallucinations. Everyone since identifies it as very consistent with Psychedelic trips.

@@cbrend22 It is known that Lewis Carrol used laudanum, which contains opium, to try to control it. In large enough doses, it can cause hallucinations. The story is also political and social satire, and drug use was unregulated. Some of the characters were based upon public figures who did use.

Released in 1967. Hippies, drug use, psychedelic rock, free love. This song became the anthem for that time. The references were from the book Alice in Wonderland. White rabbit, the Red Queen, hookah smoking Caterpillar, the Dormouse, the White Knight, the chessboard. The song is describing a LSD trip.

Grace was retaliating against the older generation’s critique of the hippies’ drug use, pointing out that their parents had raised them on stories like Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz that had obvious drug references, so it was kind of hypocritical of the parents to then demonize drugs completely.

There was a song called Puff the Magic Dragon that was about growing up and leaving childhood behind. A lot of the 'older generation' accused that song of being about drugs when it wasn't. Jefferson Airplane came out with this song in 1967 about Alice in Wonderland. Written in 1865, the story had its own drug references that many people ignored or didn't get. The final lines, feed your head, was meant as a call to educate yourself.

This is "from" Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (19th century). That other book, Go Ask Alice was a fraud. It was "like a diary". Originally, it was peddled as a "found" diary by a couple of youth counselors trying to drum up business. Turns out it was entirely fiction, written by one of those counselors. The publisher relented, eventually, and stopped calling it a "diary" and dropped the pretense of authenticity. Dumb book, dull made-for-TV movie. Peace.

"White Rabbit" defines psychedelic rock circa 1967. The lyrical imagery comes from Alice in Wonderland. "Feed Your Head!" Eat some acid. "Turn on, tune in, drop out" as Timothy Leary -- the Johhny Appleseed of LSD -- phrased it that year of the Summer of Love, before a crowd of 30,000 people gathered together to party in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Ever since then this song has been used numerous times in movies and documentaries to evoke the psychedelic sixties, for example, in the 1986 Vietnam War movie Platoon. The 2013 crime drama "American Hustle" -- starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Bradley Cooper -- put a whole different spin on the practice with a great Turkish language cover of "White Rabbit" sung by Mayssa Karaa. Check that out too when you can.

I think the best way to listen to a lot of music, especially ones like this is... twice. First time, you just listen and ride the wave, feel it. Then the second time around, you can think about it, analyzed the meaning of the words. This was a 1960's drug song, yup. I was there, it was dynamite, an it remains iconic and emblematic. But - really - it was meant to be absorbed and felt, not thought about too much.

Here are the Lyrics for you. 🍄 One pill makes you larger And one pill makes you small, And the ones that mother gives you Don't do anything at all. Go ask Alice When she's ten feet tall. And if you go chasing rabbits And you know you're going to fall, Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar Has given you the call. Call Alice When she was just small. When the men on the chessboard Get up and tell you where to go And you've just had some kind of mushroom And your mind is moving low. Go ask Alice I think she'll know. When logic and proportion Have fallen sloppy dead, And the White Knight is talking backwards And the Red Queen's "off with her head!" Remember what the dormouse said: "Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"

Young people were protesting the war in Vietnam, rebelling against government, police , who were called “pigs” and authorities. Kids rejected parents music and turned to rock music and drugs were used. Sex, drugs and rock and roll described the sixties. Music was a way to express ideas, feelings, and to make political statements. Bob Dylan was huge, he wrote poetic music , a virtual genius that was idolized everywhere. Woodstock was a great gathering of musical talent that thousands of young adults and kids attended over a few days. It was top of the list of great happenings. Jefferson Airplane , Jimmy Hendrix, Santana, were just a few of the performers...check out the concert at Woodstock. It was UNIQUE. Peace! Out of sight! Far out!

In the late psychedelic 60’s and 70’s bands were experimenting with drugs especially Acid, hence the term “Acid Rock or Psychedelic Rock” to come up with awesome lyrics and songs (Doors, Beatles, Rolling Stone, Who, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd etc…). The problem was no one could talk about it either on TV or in songs, you know censorship in that era!!! Jefferson Airplane trippy songs about “Alice in Wonderland” well the band used the books novel to disguise her song about drugs… What the band felt about the drug use whether good or bad!?! In the end she sings “Feed Your Head” meaning educate yourself before you end up like them?!? BTW when she sings “One Pill that Mother gives you do nothing at all” indicates “Birth Control Pills…”

Oh yeah! The 60's was wild! Everything goes. It calmed down in the 70's and as far as I know, at no time since, matched the drug experimentation, the use, the free sex, the short(est) shirts ever and no bra's as the 60's and that's why Bill's answer was "I didn't inhale". Because those two were right smack dab in the middle of it. You can pretty much bet, if it didn't happen in the 60's it hasn't happened yet. An awful lot of common sense was lost back in the 60's and in my opinion, it's the reason children of the seventies only have fragments of it to this day. Just watch someone who is fifty years old or younger cross the road. The ones with the fragments look and cross anyway, the ones without the fragments don't even look. If they have common sense they would stop, look and cross when it was safe.
