We have begun the tests of the slugs Goodell Shotshell Co. has sent to us. This is a 1 oz. slug with an agressive, sawtooth-like look to it. We test them through smooth (cylinder bore), rifled choke, and full-rifling.

@@TheOneOfWonders It's not even close to being hard to get a shotgun certificate. You are legally entitled to one as long as you're not clinically bonkers or a drunk and don't have any significant criminal record. It's effectively a 'shall issue' licence. Unlike a FAC, where you have to demonstrate why you should be granted a licence, with a SGC the police have to demonstrate why you *should not*. And that has to be a reason that would stand up in court if you challenge the refusal. I suggest you phone the firearms licencing bods and have a chat with them. They are usually civilians and as often as not recreational or sporting shooters who will talk you through the process. It's bureaucracy but no more difficult than getting a driving licence.

Jeff have you ever heard of “cut slugs?” You take an ordinary shotshell (typically bird shot) and cut the shell almost in half at the middle, separating the shot cup side from the primer/powder side all except for just the tiniest bit of shell plastic, then tape it back together with one wrap of masking tape so it stays together and chambers correctly when pumped. The shot cup half, rather than opening and flying out and spreading, comes apart still in the shell jacket and is held together much like a discarding sabbot, only it doesn’t discard until impacting the target, which leaves the shot all together as one mass until it hits the target, much like a slug. After impact it comes apart and acts like a frangible round, dump most or all of it’s energy into the target. I don’t know what the legalities of this in California are, but maybe there’s a way to test this out? If so, I would find that very interesting for the purposes of home defense with less over penetration likelihood. :-) Update: I see you’ve done this at least once let me check that video out.

Back in the old days, when ammunition companies were still trying to make 9mm rimfire shotshells work with a paper tube, they not infrequently worked in exactly the way you describe, without any modification being needed! This is probably why they've been making all-brass 9mm rimfire shotshells for the past forty years. Now, if on one of the occasions when the whole tube went down the barrel with the shot, the combined mass actually hit a rat or whatever else it was you were shooting at, then it would do damage. In practice, you hardly ever hit anything that way. I strongly suspect that the all-brass hulls in that instance are cheaper to make than marrying a paper of plastic tube to a separate brass rimfire base.
@Combat_Pyro
@Combat_Pyro Жыл бұрын
I saw the video Jeff posted, but it was only one shot. I’d be interested to see that test done again with multiple brands of shells and hopefully on a “meat target” like Paul Harrell uses, just to check the penetration / over-penetration and effectiveness. We’re only talking about 10-20 feet of distance in a home, so accuracy isn’t as big a concern.

I appreciate you doing testing with the rifled choke. Its what I run all the time with my 18.5 inch smooth bore all the time. It seems to work really well with some brands/styles of slugs and others it does not seem to matter one bit. My main curiosity is how it affects all the different sabot slugs. Keep the testing/data coming and thanks again.

This slug's performance is just another data point in the expanding field of support for the notion that aerodynamic spin-stabilization simply doesn't work; you either spin-stabilize in the barrel or use more passive aero stabilization, like large fins or passively-stable shapes (e.g. diabolo).

Yes. Rifling is always right-handed by American standards (the British have used left-handed rifling in some of their rifles in the past, but I don't know about their rifled shotgun barrels or if it's even a thing still), it's a standard in all American guns, and even if it wasn't it would not be too much of an issue. The slug would be rotated in the direction of the rifling in the barrel no matter what, it wouldn't matter if the grooves were going the opposite direction on the slug, It wouldn't cause any damage whatsoever. If the slug had very pronounced fin-like rifling grooves with a heavy twist it might cause accuracy issues due to the twist rate spinning the fins in the wrong direction, but that's about the only issue that might arise from such a thing. On a side note, It's kind of interesting why the Brits used left-handed rifling, they believed it imparted a leftward drift in the bullet that was supposed to account for the tendency of shooters to pull to the right when firing, though it has since been proven that twist direction doesn't matter in the slightest in that regard, it's really just a matter of manufacturers preference. Us Americans have used right-handed rifling because that's how the first batches of tooling was set up back when mass production started, and it eventually just became a standard.

Hey, O.G., it's me, it's me! Howdy! Hope you had a good (didn't melt away) summer. 😀 I've had to explain a rifled choke to the "unlearned" many times before, with some of them "not pickin' up what I was layin' down." I just compared it to throwing a football... "Your hand and the ball remain virtually motionless for the entirety of your arm's motion through the pass (the slug through the barrel), right until the moment you release the ball and, in that last couple of inches, as you open your hand and release the ball, your fingertips impart rotation upon the ball, causing the ball to spin (in a perfect world) all the way to the receiver (the target). The rifled choke does to the slug as your fingertips do to the ball." Right about then, the light bulbs quickly go on over all of their heads as most of them have at least tried to throw a football and everyone else has watched it a bunch. It takes many words to "paint a picture" but, it only takes a couple of seconds as you demonstrate the pass/release motion, say my well phrased verbiage above and "When you release the ball with spin, this is your slug..." and they get it. 😀 Yesterday (ok, the 13th) was my birthday and the "gun gods" brought me a brand, spankin' new, Franklin Armory "Liberty" rifle lower... With a factory tuned, binary trigger already on board! (GA has its advantages) I cant wait... (best "Roscoe P. Coltrane" yucks) 😆 Oh, yeah... They also brought some shiny, new shells for my Beretta M3 (ok, a clone) and it works flawlessly. 😆 Which brings me to the point and, my request... You should find a way to work the infamous M3 ("The Spas 12 that works") into an episode. I'm sure that I wouldn't be the only one to enjoy such a joyful sight as you switching back and forth between pump and semi through a variety of light and heavy loads as you find which load(s) works the best! 😀 (Sorry, I'm still a little "powder giddy...") hahaha Ok, thanks again for the good stuff... As always. You, too... Jeff!

Not true. Try going duck hunting or trap shooting with a rifled shotgun barrel shooting bird shot😉. They turn your real life shotgun into a Call Of Duty shotgun🤣, your shot pattern goes from 2 feet wide at 20 yards to 20 feet wide at 20 yards😂, it spins the shot up and flings them outward the instant they leave the barrel. There's hardly a single pellet in the center of the pattern too lol, it's just overall a terrible idea to shoot birdshot or buck through a rifled barrel.

This would have been a bit boring if not for the fantastic high speed camera work. I'm always amazed at how many interesting events are revealed by the slow motion footage. Thanks Guys!

There's a lot of data for Ryan to pour over here so I hope he can tweak the design a bit.

I just started shooting slugs I cast out of a 12” rifled slug barrel for my Encore. Shot very well, took the open sights off and replaced then with a mount bar and Trueglow red dot. At 25 yards, shot a 2” group after minor adjustments on the sights, only fired 4 rounds. Good set up for brush hunting up here in Maine. Take care and stay safe you two! God bless!🎚🙏🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾

I've been thinking about loading my own slug loads for a Mossberg rifled barrel. The factory stuff is now pretty spendy. Got a couple sabot w/slugs already inside from BP. Only equipment piece needed is a roll crimper. The wad combinations seem to be the most complex part, so many types for different combinations.
