Today we test out the third type of Anferov Bullets. Almost everything has been re-designed except perhaps the tail fins. These were quite difficult to load, to find the correct recipe of powder.
Again the challenge with these is using American powders for something that would probably be simple using Russian powders. We have not one, but TWO lead plate tests today.
Everything Black Powder - using black powder

Back in the old days when people were pioneering 44 magnum loads they used to use Cream of Wheat loaded on top of the powder as a filler to take up the extra space. Not sure if that will help any in the future or not though but might be worth a try. Thanks for the video!!!

I've been using corn meal for over 20 years, ever since a friend introduced me to that. The benefit of corn meal is the it cleans out some of the BP fowling. I've also used Polenta, another ground corn but courser than corn meal. But I've known a few guys that have used ground walnut shells.

Him and Barry from Moss Pawn on iv8888 were some of the last of the real 2a Vietnam vets who knew things beyond striker fired polymers and ar platform stuff. Barry taught the "cut shell" trick to the world! Some of us that grew up with them and slugs were rarely available without a trip to Bass Pro or the big city. That should tell you the area I grew up in. Ozark the TV show ain't got s*** on what happens down at the pig farms in Snow, Marble, and Zinc. I learned very early not to mess with people. Kid's today wouldn't last one conversation with people in the "flyover state's" talking to people like they do. Truly disrespectful people get one chance always. After that you might as well go get a shovel and start digging 😂 Oh, sorry, my darn dog gets on here and types wild stories sometimes! Have a great day.

Jeff, there are a couple of things a friend introduced me to when shooting Black Powder with a reduced load that might help if you care to try them. He had a reproduction Colt .44 Walker pistol that takes 60 grains of BP. But if he reduced the loads to light target or to the loads of the 1858 Remington of 30 grains, he had a huge gap between the ball and powder that would effect the ignition. What he came up with, that was cheap and readily available, was to use "corn meal" to fill the space above the powder that helped to compress the powder charge and hold it in place. It also had the benefit of cutting the fowling in the refiling of the barrel. Corn meal could also be mixed with water to form a moldable past that would fill gaps better and drys hard. They would also disintegrate quickly. But if you try that, it might help to put a light coating or oil (Pam Spray) or a light spray wax for furniture if you are molding it to fins like this. Just to insure nothing sticks to them. It shouldn't stick to plastic anyway, but use for insurance on those you only have a small number to test. I've been using that corn meal in BP for over 20 years with no problems. BP and smokeless powder shooters using big boar cartridge calibers, to hold less than a full powder charge back by the primer to insure ignition, use a poyl-fill or pillow stuffing to fill the gap under the bullet. Especially in necked cartridges. You can get this out of an old pillow or stuffed toy. Just a couple of cheap ideas that might help you can try. But I was thinking the corn meal would separate better than the toilet paper. It would be more like sand as the sabot petals separated. A piece of Saran Wrap on the bottom of the Sabot the loose meal in place as you stuff the sabot in the shot shell hull. I've used that making BP flat base paper cartridges. It works better than the nitrated paper and is consumed on firing. Like I said, just some suggestions if you find another creation that is difficult and needs some wadding or protection. That corn meal could also be used to fill a hollow base to give more support. Good videos and stay safe

Great job! Even the "Edge Lord!". You did a good job on loading. It isn't an exact science when you start, but after you study it in action ,it can be exact. I never knew what I'd get with my uncles reloads. I spent a long fruitless day dove hunting until I had a very easy shot. Pulled the trigger and had a big puff of smoke come out, without a kick. I lowered barrel to see what happened and all the bird shot rolled out the barrel onto the ground.

@@darthkarl99 If you were going to model it in 3D software, you would take a cylinder and view it from the side. Then you would divide the cylinder in half lengthwise with a zigzag saw shape cut. You would roll the cylinder 90 degrees and do it again. That would give you four interlocking sabots. The fins aren’t necessary on that scale. Just use a cone shape. A cone shape with a protruding lip around the outside will do the job. The lip is there to push on the trailing edges of the sabots.

I have watched your tests of flechette rounds for years and I really love the idea and the project. As an aerospace engineer I find all this particularly interesting and inspiring. I started watching these videos before having the knowledge necessary to understand the physics behind the behavior of the rounds and now that I do I love them even more. It's particularly impressive how clean the sabot separation is, Dimitry sure did a great job on that. Also the fact that the separation starts from the back is interesting. I can't say if it was intended to be this way and would love to know more about it. One thing I must say against the design of the dart is that this torpedo shape is not the most stable. It's clearly stable enough to prevent the round from going into tailspin but not to damp the wobbling properly. If I may I would give an advice on how to optimize the dart aerodynamically (I'm not considering possible structural requirements). To reduce the wobbling it is necessary to increase the margin of stability of the dart. This means that the dart's aerodynamic neutral point (aka center of pressure aka aerodynamic center) must be pushed back as the center of mass is pushed forward. The torpedo shape of the dart puts the center of mass relatively near the tip but also makes it difficult to push back the center of pressure because the tip of the dart has a big cross section. Increasing the number (and if possible size) of the stabilizing fins should push back the center of pressure. Making the shaft and tip smaller should also with pushing back the center of pressure but would also push back the center of mass. If it was possible to use lighter fins in greater number and size, make the shaft smaller and in a lighter material and the tip smaller but in a heavier material this would optimize stability. Continue the great work!

About how "Sabot" should be pronounced : I think I like the pronouciation closer to the french word "sabot" - which is some sort of carved wood shoewear, which in french (I am French) would be something like "Sah-Beau". One of the english (and french) word which comes from this particular apparel is "Sabotage" - which comes from the Silk workers in France in or around the city of Lyon who, asking for raises in wages, would ram their wooden shoes in the intricate machineries of silk weaving machinery. If I remember correctly, they eventually won the struggle, but blood was shed.

I don't know if restaurants still get their cleaning supplies (soap, degreaser) in five-gallon buckets, but if you can get one of those buckets that hasn't had the lid removed, they make great water filled targets. I used to shoot them back in the 80s. Those buckets have a thicker crimp than the ones bought in the big box stores. I've hit them with a 30-30 and 30 06, and they send the lid flying like a frisbee. When I shot them, water went about 10 to 15 feet straight up. We used to set the buckets on a tree stump so it had a solid foundation.
