Just how big and heavy is ‘too big and heavy’ for a family 4x4? Our American cousins usually like to supersize things, but the new all-electric Cadillac Escalade IQ takes things to a new and terrifying level.
Based on a stretched version of the double-decker battery carrying platform from under the Hummer EV, it’s a luxury SUV with 24-inch wheels, two cargo bays, up to eight seats, over fifty inches of screen, and good for a claimed 400 miles of range. And it weighs over four tonnes.
Is this the point where even the American public start to admit that enough is enough when it comes to SUV bloat, or is it merely the four-wheeled epitome of the American Dream?
Top Gear’s Ollie Kew has been for a closer look…

I really appreciate that they asked about that. Height is the real killer, hitting the vital organs head on with the grill will kill people. Lowering the front/belt line while keeping the same height would help a little bit, but it would be hard to stomach (morbid pun intended).

He was avoiding the question to a certain extent. While this is my guess, I presume that this is not being sold in Europe. A.) it’s too big and B.) it probably will not pass European pedestrian crash test safety standards. I very well could be wrong. Ollie also mentioned in a bit of a throw away, that it would not be going to the UK while commenting about the e-trunk.

How it fits into wider reality is something else. OTOH, the WSJ has a recent-ish article with pictures of a young family and their 1958 Buick. I look at the picture of their young boy in relation to that car's beltline and hoodline and see that many of today's people know nothing. It looks like there are cameras all around it, I saw some next to the front wheels. Maybe they are for sensors too, but probably help in 360 view. However, I agree the hood is enormous, as all recent American trucks and full size SUV's. They all have this blunt nose style that's actually increased pedestrian injuries and fatalities since 2009 by more than half. Far as I can tell, there is no rule in U.S. about hood height (or hardly any standard) or maybe vehicles over a certain weight are exempt; that is more likely the reason. Pedestrians be dammed I guess. The look of the front of the vehicle is more important in this case.. Take a look at a late 90's SUV's or trucks, and there is a huge difference in height, pedestrians at least had a chance back then..

NHTSA study put the Silverado at #1 for vehicles involved in the most deadly crashes in America, followed closely by the Ford f-150. The Ford Explorer, f-250, and Ram1500 also made the list. Studies by independent insurance companies will consistently bump up pickup trucks as the top 20 deadliest as well. And it's not always pedestrian or other vehicle safety, rolling over these vehicles is very easy compared to a Honda Civic, and there have been failures as recently as 2020 for many of their roofs to support the weight of the vehicle as required. And finally, A 2023 IIHS study found that vehicles that are tall and blunt, such as a large pickup or SUV, are 43.6% more likely to cause death in a collision with a pedestrian. But they figured this out in Europe in the 80's, which is why they actually have pedestrian crash standards there, while we don't.

The head designer danced around the issue of weight. When a 4 tonnes vehicles side swipes / plows into a 1.2 tonnes vehicle, a VW Golf as examples, it is going to be carnages. Mass equals potential energy. It is physics and that mass plus momentum is going to cause absolute havoc when in an accident. That said. I do like the design looks of this vehicle.
