Actually this is separate from the starry expanse. However a few (maybe less then a few tbh, I forgor) of the developers on starry expanse has moved onto Cyan's official version... although idk if they still work there or not...

I remember how much the village both terrified and excited me as a kid- I couldn't sleep at all at night after playing those parts because of how strongly I felt about those areas. It was creepy but fascinating to see the village so empty, yet obviously hiding life. Especially the scenes where you'd catch the little girl or a villager just running away and hiding from you. I think Myst and Riven both started my fascination towards people and their cultures across history in a way. I look forward to seeing it all in game once more. Especially in vr. 🥰

I feel like the new structure in the village have a similar architecture to Tay's settlement, which hints at both people originating from the same place.

Isn't Tay based off the great tree? which is now prison island. I think it used to have different kind of structure on top of it before Gehn turned it into an office, and then a prison.

Holy shit, this looks so good. It's so wild that these teasers are so easily able to capture that feeling of nostalgia from the original Riven -- even though the original certainly never looked this good, the art that you guys have been doing feels so faithful to the original that it all feels so familiar, in a way making the past memories of Riven come alive again in new ways with details never experienced before.

I really liked the original style. I hope the developers won't abuse color grading like they did in the latest Myst reboot, ending up with a brownish color all over. Better stay close to the original one!

@@richardsavolainen944 I think it is. Yellowish, washed out colors. Look for pictures from the original game, you will see the difference, colors are more vivid, the water is deep blue-cyan.

What's crazy about this is that my brain remembers Riven being just as detailed and high definition from back when I first played it as a kid on windows 95, testament to the quality put into it.

Riven was the best looking game of that era and was the peak of the point-and-click graphical adventure genre. The shift to 3D happened soon after that, but the tech wasn't quite there yet so it didn't look as good.

@@Cyan-Official Hopefully very soon! My brother is flying home in about a month and staying till roughly the end of July. I'd love to play this with him while he's here with us. The series has a lot of sentimental value in this house. My brothers and I practically spent our entire childhoods trying to figure out Myst.

Not wanting to play the nasty person here, and not meaning it personally, but as far as Cyan games are concerned, I at least try to always stay away from offers. This is the only Game Company I’d feel bad about getting their games while they’re on offer. For the hard work they do, and all the things they went through, they deserve my money, to the full extent where possible. Of course, this is not always possible, plus not everybody can afford to behave this way, which probably included me some time in the past. So not really any hard feelings, where buying their games when they’re on sale is concerned.

Wow, the image fidelity looks incredible! This was one (of many) of my favorite areas and I was kind of obsessed with how the water divots were formed for each of the tram stops. Can't wait to experience this again in the remake!

Agreed, i don't know how they managed it, but Riven doesn't have the Glossy/Plastic feeling that other Unreal Engine games tend to have (Which Myst remake and firmament had as well).... i wonder if they made their own custom shaders and/or modified the default rendering.

@@agahnim0196 glossy plastic exactly! That's the right way to describe it, which makes it look cartoonish. I think if you get rid of the gloss plastic and made the color palette more realistic and less saturated games will look more like Riven

I’ve played Myst and Riven so much, I know the worlds by memory. These new structures in Riven have me intrigued and anxious to play the game like the first time I played it. 😊

The first and last time I played Riven in full was back in summer of 2002. I have not played it since, hoping to forget most of the game so I could rediscover the puzzles. But I follow Cyan, have read the lore and listen to the soundtrack. Riven was such an immersive experience that to this day I still remember pretty much all of the islands and puzzles, so well, I won't wait any longer when the VR version comes out.

Almost feels like coming home. I can't help but notice the new hut with all the windows at the top of the village. I see you guys have been doing some renovating since I've been away. Can't wait to see what you've done with the place. ; )

I have the original guide that was released for Riven back in the 90's. The way it was presented as the Stranger's journey, seamlessly presenting puzzle solutions while acting as almost a novelization at the same time was so memorable. I wish that something similar could be done for the remake; It would be amazing to compare the differences in the story now that more information has come to light.

It is, and the village was also not was also not visible from the cave, it was hidden by a slab of rock. and you took a step and it was there. I think making the village visible from the cave was a great idea, it's moire atmospheric/photogenic, but I don't think that structure fits, I've always seen the village as primitive, and it makes it feel less so. The shoolhouse (?) was also not visible from the caves, and I think you should need to search for it, not just have it presented: plop! "Here it is!" I thinkl any changes should not be drastically different, you shouldn't notice therm. But here it is, noticable and pops right out at you.

This was the first computer game I played after Myst when i was 10. I was mind blown and so excited to see all the other games like Riven that would be made moving forward. To my utter surprise computer games took a nosedive and became mostly all dumbed down FPS. Little did i know Riven was THE peak.

I started with the first edition from Myst as a child when it was released and then played the hole series. I ever dreamed to play these games in real 3D or be in that game like in VR. I'm soooo happy to have these possibility now. I played Myst with my kids on Quest3 and we count the days to play Riven.... Thank you so much for that remake! Also for Obduction and Firmament, these are great games!

I'm amazed to this day how real the original Riven still looks. To be honest modern games do not look or feel as real as Riven did in the 90s, its really wild

it's that great big hill of "raytracing" that's taken forever to get over. we're almost there. without it graphics are so limited and have to rely on a thousand situational tricks. (but also immaculate attention to detail and passionate worldbuilding)

@@Rhodochrone the world building is incredible for example Jedi survivor I'm just in awe at the details. Yet even that game still feels a bit cartoony, while OG Riven feels like a real world and way less cartoony. Might also be a bit of nostalgia for me 😏🥸

More buildings! Looks like it's getting more fleshed out! I always wondered where the Rivenese got the materials and workshops to build Ghen's buildings and where to house the guilds with a village that size. Perhaps lost with the island's decay?

@@Macil2018 In Myst: the Book of Atrus, it was established that Riven was once one island, and Ghen's temple had an idol of him instead of an imager.

absolutely thrilled for this game. I also just noticed Firmament is on sale on Steam, I might have to buy to to tide me over. If I were to critique _anything,_ there is some slightly wonky water reflections at 6s when the balustrade rolls past and I guess some of the screen space reflections at the bottom of the image stretch out as it moves off screen too. but this is the smallest of nit picks, I can't wait!

I am SO EXCITED! After playing the first two games and "mystifying" (sorry, I could resist) people when I showed them the games that I was so engrossed in, I am SO LOOKING FORWARD to re-experiencing them with more fidelity... Anecdote: I remember being stuck on a certain part of Riven and I was showing a friend what the game was all about when I showed them how anything could be a clue. I remember showing how I could spin this orb thing and even the sound it made could be a clue and..."Wait a minute...that sound..... I KNOW THAT SOUND! OK! I'm so sorry, but I have to play right now! I'll catch up with you later!" 😉😎🤘☮

I always dreamt, that there should be as much enviromental variation as possible, say very rarely a pebble or dust falling down a cliff side, insects, minimalistic weather events like dusk, haze, very faint percipitation, animal noises, fish schools, wild life, insects, even like ants and bugs and small snakes, falling leaves etc. It just has to be very very rare. That would be absolutely amazing.

I love that new... apartment hut? Makes the link between the design of the village and Tay a lot more obvious (in other words I'm not sure I noticed the similarity between the huts and the tree orb thing).

Looks incredible! Small critique and I'm sure ya'll will probably fix it without me mentioning it but... the little pegs that hold down the sticks for the walkway are very even and perfect. Makes it look a little bit unrealistic.
