Original: • GRAND FUNK RAILROAD - ...
Mark Farner - guitar, harmonica, vocals
Don Brewer - drums, vocals
Mel Schacher - bass
"Inside-Looking Out", often written "Inside Looking Out",is a 1966 single by The Animals. It was a substantial hit in their native land, reaching number 12 on the UK Singles Chart, number 21 in Canada, but was at best a minor hit in the United States, reaching number 34 on the U.S. pop singles chart. The song is very loosely based on a work chant entitled "Rosie" collected by musicologist Alan Lomax and released in his album Popular Songbook.
In 1969 it was covered by Grand Funk Railroad, who on their album Grand Funk added some marijuana references to the lyrics such as changing the original's "rebirth" to "reefer." A reworking of portions of the song was also recorded by the Austrian band Novak's Kapelle in 1969 as "Hypodermic Needle". It was later covered by doom metal band The Obsessed, released on their 1999 compilation album, Incarnate and again by The Greenhornes on their 2001 self-titled second album. In 2001, Eric Burdon released a live cover on Official Live Bootleg 2000.
Dan Auerbach does a live cover on his recent shows.
Other covers included by Fringe, Gerry Joe Weise, The Mops, and Layabouts. A sample from the Grand Funk version is embedded in the song "High 5 (Rock The Catskills)" on the Beck album Odelay.

This band is NOT in the rock hall of fame. Why not? There's inductees that couldn't carry these guys amps!

I'm a GFR fan from the 60's n 70's. Mark, Don and Mel breathed life into this band. Don's drums were the heart beat pounding in my chest. Mel's bass moved every muscle in my body and down my spine. Mark was the blood and oxygen and together they all breathed life into the magic that was Grand Funk Railroad. Not to hurt anyone's feelings but lets get the original band back one more time and experience the magic.

Just watching them perform this song in concert was exhausting. They put so much energy in this. They put on an incredible concert, start to finish. I saw them 3 times.

I first saw Grand Funk at the Los Angeles Forum way back in 1971. To this day they are one of the best bands of all time and should be in the Hall of Fame!

I'm 70, seen them twice and still play bass and guitar with their records and cds. Live on a mountain so I open up. In the summer we have an animal dance day; bear, deer, tacoon and so on. Just sitting and looking out my back door. Best trio ever. Mel, the thunder of bass gods.

My older brother introduced me to grand funk in 1975 when I was eight and he was seventeen. In 1984 they came Hawaii Andrew’s amphitheater open seating so I stood next to the stage with my friend . I song along every song even the real deep cuts .At the end of the show as Mark Farner walked off stage he looked and pointed at me and said “rock on brother” it was like god had talked to me . All the years enjoying the bands music . Then at seventeen years old to be given that encouragement 😁. Great reaction video

In 1971 Grand Funk Railroad sold out Shea Stadium in just 71 HOURS! The only other band to sell out Shea was the Beatles and it took them weeks. They also were unplugged and kicked off the stage when they opened for Led Zeppelin in 1969 at Olympia Stadium in Detroit for being too good for them to follow.

I bought their albums back in the 70,s/ now I'm reminiscing again/😊/ Thx/ Those concerts back in those days were wild 3 hr ride concerts for $5 or $6 dollars/ You could take you party supplys in without being searched. In the 80,s the whole dynamic changed?? I think they,re from Flint Mich. You sound like a Michigan girl? Thx😊 5:10

GFR is like Lynyrd Skynyrd, they have many songs to be explored, and it is well worth the exploration. "Paranoid," "Loneliness," "Sins a Good Man's Brother," "I'm Your Captain," and "I Can Feel Him in the Morning" are just a few.

The reason they are not in the hall of fame, is because a lot of their song were over 7 minutes long. They didn't get the radio air time. So that the main reason. It wasn't the music.
