They apparently grew up in extreme poverty, so their parents probably weren't in a position to put them through music school, but Almira, the oldest of the four, won a scholarship for singing lessons as a prize in a singing competition, and later passed on what she learned to her sisters. That, no doubt, had a lot to do with why they were so emotional upon receiving the incredible response from the judges and the audience. One of the judges says to them, "This audition has just changed your lives," and it absolutely did.
