Kurt Cobain one of the forefathers of grunge! Also Jay Z sampled some of the lyrics in this song for Holy grail. The song is based of mental health and instead of trying to fit into society you "come as you are" (be yourself). People spend their whole lives trying to fit in with society that and they eventually hurt themselves to the point of going crazy and killing themselves. He made this song to tell people to simply be yourself, be the freak, the loser, or whatever your are and be at peace with it. Kurt struggled crippling depression, asthma, ADHD, and some chronic pains and he was a mess....not that many guys from that music scene is left.

grunge is a fashion statement, Nirvana is a punk rock band. they sound nothing like Pearl Jam or Alice in chains, two bands Kurt Cobain hated. Soundgarden would be a better comparison but those two are still very different bands. Nirvana is a mix of The Beatles, punk rock, and a little metal and some new wave. They sound more like The Pixies than any of the Seattle bands.
@waynetables6414
@waynetables6414 2 жыл бұрын
@ENDLESS NAMELESS No, he actually liked Eddie Vedder on a personal level, said Eddie was super nice.. He was friendly with the Alice in Chains guys as well. He did heroin with Layne Staley and Mike Starr when they were all booked for a show in Brazil.. but from a strictly musical perspective he hated those bands. This isn't my opinion, these are things Kurt Cobain said publicly. He didn't like that style of music. He did realize a lot of the same people that liked Nirvana liked those bands though.. for that reason he generally didn't make a big thing of it. But he actually did like Soundgarden. He never saw PJ or AIC as "competition". He struggled with fame and success to begin with; he probably would have preferred those bands to be more famous than he was.. in his letters, he said his dream was to play in a great band and not have to deal with the fame that came with it, like the Pixies. He saw AIC as a glam metal band that started wearing flannel to get famous. He called them "fake underground music". He thought they were posers. He saw Pearl Jam as a bland corporate rock band that was being pushed by the music industry to capitalize on the "grunge" aesthetic. You can look all of this up it's all on record. Cobain did a lot of interviews
@rachelsullivan2926
@rachelsullivan2926 2 жыл бұрын
@@waynetables6414 The flannel was a decision made by their label. They claimed to not want to do it, but trusted in their label about it being the way things were done. Nirvana had the same label and never bowed to the pressure to put on a fake persona to get famous. It's understandable why he would say what you quoted.

The lyrics, "Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach" were taken from a campaign in Seattle that encouraged heroin users to soak their needles in bleach after injecting to reduce the risk of spreading HIV. The phrase for the campaign was actually "If doused in mud, soak in bleach." The lyrics as used by Cobain could be about tolerating everyone no matter what they look like - black people being the "mud" and white people being the "bleach." In this song, Cobain sings over and over, "I don't have a gun." Less than three years after the song was released, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This was an eerie turn of events, but it's unlikely that Cobain had suicide on his mind when he wrote the lyrics. The gun could be a reference to a time when Cobain's mother got mad at her husband (Kurt's stepfather) and threw his guns in a river. Cobain says he recovered some of them, sold them, and used the money to buy his first guitar when he was 15.
@shylo_moxii
@shylo_moxii 2 жыл бұрын
Nirvana producer Butch Vig says that this is one of his favorites from the album. He says that Cobain used the same effects pedal on his guitar that he used on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to produce the "trippy, psychedelic, watery effect." Vig told NPR: "I think that song is about acceptance, and about misfits. You're cool no matter how screwed up you are. 'Come As You Are' is an ode to accepting someone for who they are."

See, this is why Cobain was one of if not the greatest lyricists of all time. His lyrics are so multi dimensional and you could interpret them in a myriad of ways. For instance, the way I interpret the lyrics "Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach, as I want you to be. as a friend" is in a more literal sense. Meaning You could be dirty(sinful, troubled) or you could be clean(A good person) and I'm going to accept you for you either way. It i think it pertains to the main message of the song this way. But, Like you said, there is always another way of interpretation and neither is wrong. That's the beauty of Cobain.

Nirvana was all about the lyrics, and yet they refused to let their own interpretations hold a song back, and that is the beauty of it, they share a piece of their world, and people look through the hole and see what resonates with them, one song can tell many stories. Nirvana was music for change, whether it be anti-racism, sexual assault, mental illness, gun violence, corporate greed and wealth inequality.

It's often hard to really identify the thoughts or ideas behind lyrics in a Nirvana track because a lot of it is very surreal, kind of dreamlike, and it often only makes sense in an abstract way where you have to fill in the gaps yourself. It's almost like that feeling when you're just about to fall asleep but not quite there, and you have bizarre and illogical thoughts that disappear when you try to focus on them.

Some interpret it as a false comfort sort of song; "Come as you were, the way I want you to be," can be seen as past tense, "I don't have a gun" is probably a lie to get the person closer. This person is most likely a betrayer and the song's protagonist could be the would-be killer.

This song got me into harder rock/metal/punk. It's like the Beatles - nobody had done this before, but now everybody's done it.

@layedbakdfr when he says ... come as you are .... and after he make the statement that he doesn't have a gun like 100 times .... is like saying ... dude I'm not a threat ... I won't bite that kind of stuff ... after he says ... come as I want you to be .. as a friend ... an unknown enemy ... at the end ... he is letting you in and declaring he don't have methods to defend himself , in reality ... he was pretty chill ... very harmless and calm about trouble...

I wasn’t so keen to this band. This isn’t one of their best songs either, you were honest with the opinion and I respect that! I would love for you to try some infant annihilator or Lorna shore. I think you’ll like the technique and technical side to death metal.

@@Youainthim86 What's not to like? Kurt's melodies are infectious, his singing voice is completely original, the drumming and bass playing is godlike, and the lyrics are insanely good. I can't understand you. But you know what? That's okay.

@@gigistephens4633 you don’t have to understand me? That’s the beauty of this country and the internet. It’s a place for people with different ideals and opinions to gather and discuss differences. You maybe a huge fan of Mr. Kurt and that’s dope! You may not be a huge fan of biggie and Nas but I am! You might not like Ferry Corsten or Alice deejay but I do. I wouldn’t knock you for it, it makes you, you. For my rock I just prefer HEAVY DARK DEATH FAST THRASH METAL. It fits my personality.

This whole album to this day is a classic, Cobain was a legend of his time, also the drummer of Nirvana, Dave Grohl, went on to form and still is the frontman of Foo Fighters who are internationally famous, if you wanna react to some of their songs, I would recommend The Pretender, Everlong, Walk, Run, Rope and probably Wheels
