Mandawuy Yunupingo was the lead singer of Yothu Yindi. Gurrumul Yunupingo (his nephew) played guitar and keys and back up singer back then. Gurrumul went on to become one of Australia's most respected indigenous musical artists.

Our brothers and sisters the Celtic people, Tibet, and all instruments of wood and cultures, you will hear the Yidaki ( didgeridoo) the mystery of this powerful ancient sacred sound/vibration is most important belonging to the land itself, just like its people. Thank you for presenting to the world this sound that echoes from the beginning. It truely is healing and magic beyond comprehension. The sacred and ancient Yidaki.

How can 3% of the population who do not contribute to the Australian economy ask for Sovereignty!? I love this song, the band, the authentic Aboriginal music, the real people, but .. we have paid billions to support them and the leaders are corrupt and have stolen the money - that is a big problem! Yes, every continent has been invaded! I cannot receive reparation! Maybe 25% of the population who are actual descendents of "invaders", but they have already said "sorry" and paid, and paid, and paid!! 24 million Taxpayers, mostly refugees, owe Aboriginals only respect, not a free ride for a minority forever!! 😠

@@jenniferharrison8915 To say that my people the "3% of the population do not contribute to the Australian economy" is such a stereotypical statement that we Aboriginal Australians still deal with as apparently, according to those that know so much about Aboriginal Australians like yourself Jennifer... all the men in my family work & some on the mines up North ere...& the mining companies ere in Western Australa is 1 of the Industries that is a MAJOR contributor to the wealth of Australia & they've actually damaged ancient Aboriginal sacred sites that were more than 40000 years old ...myself I've worked since I was 19 & that is more than 30 years of my life as I'm close to 50...I have 3 sons the eldest is in his early 20s & he's doing an carpentry apprenticeship building brand new apartments ere within Perth....& many other family members male and female work & have even bought their own homes, something that Aboriginal probably can't do either I'm guessing since we don't contribute to the economy...

@@rosiekickett2617 According to these mining companies they just keep paying the Indigenous people compensation and housing them, they destroy the houses and disappear! This is not a personal attack, my sister has lived all over WA and seen and heard these things! I am referring to some people who are demanding more money, claiming they don't want to be Australian but have Sovereignty (so no pensions, medical care, voting, schools, homes, licences etc) and others claiming they want more handouts! Then there are the supposed leaders who have spent over $500 million on what we can't see? Aboriginals asking for million dollar business loans, "because White people inherit a million dollars each from their families" that's is very rare, and most Australians are refugees who start with nothing! I understand that there are many tribes and many stories, but taxpayer handouts to theives does not help anyone, neither will "the voice", the elders need to band together! There are so many problems, that are really community problems! I'm so happy for your son, a carpentry apprenticeship is a great achievement, he will always do well! 🤗 We cannot change the past, most Australians have seen war and extreme suffering or their parents have, we are all suffering now! Look at the message above, "sovereignty", it is not possible and will not work! Real life in 2023 is not slogans, loud protests, random handouts and more treaties! We are all lucky to be here in Australia at all! It could be far far worse! Communicate! 👍 WA mining company's refused to help thousands of Australian farmers and families flooded in NSW/VIC, and they are still homeless and have with no income, did you know that!!?? 🤨

Indigenous Australians, like so many Indigenous Peoples around the world, were dismissed and grossly mistreated in the name of "civilization". Since then, we have come a long way in terms of acknowledging the Traditional Land Owners and celebrating them, but we still have so much more to do. Sadly, there is no easy fix for generations of abuse, but acknowledging their loss is the first step to supporting them through it.

Bull!! Americans Indians were rounded up and killed by the thousands in one go, many times! Comparing a few small groups of Aboriginals is insulting! Scots were hunted and brutally murdered many times too, the English also tried to breed them out of existence! Ukrainians were starved and treated as slaves and killed in the millions by invaders too! England was conquered many times! Don't even compare yourselves to Africans! In Cambodia 20 million people were killed for being intelligent! Whole ethnic tribes have been wiped out in the Middle East! Russia have sent whole villages of ethnic minorities to die in Ukraine!! Poles, Jews! There are MANY MANY MANY more examples! Australian Aboriginals should be grateful they were "invaded" by people with the compassion, inner strength and determination to live in peace with them, support them, build communities! "Gross Mistreatment", NO not by ANY worldwide comparison!! 🤬

You have another Aussie subscriber. You've found the boys ... Chisel, Barnsey, Farnsey and now Yothu Yindi. Well mate we also had probably the greatest rock chick ever to grace a stage. A woman who you would fall in love with at first site and at the same time stay terrified of your whole life. ..... Chrissie Amphlett of Divinyls. Check out 'Divinyls Live 1984 -- Siren (redux)' and the amazing 'Divinyls - Elsie (Live)'. We also had a blue eyed girl soul singer who would blow your mind but she can keep for later. This is thousands of miles away from me on the other side of Australia. As a native person from Tasmania, I can truly say we lost our own music. Some people will claim palawa music but that was constructed starting 1992 long after the loss. We in the Derwent Valley have lost every single word of our original language. It's important that these people of the north can sing, they break the silence of the south.

Australia is still inching towards a treaty with our First Nations people. Aussies don't treat our Aboriginal citizens very well. This song was popular with blacks and whites. As other people have written you should invest time into looking up this lead singers relative Geoffrey Yunipingu. His voice is amazing.

Yes it's a brilliant protest song & yes our indigenous population were treated disgusting by the Poms & Catholic Church, it was a horrible past. What annoys me is tho we get blamed world wide of being racists coz of how our indigenous people were treated. I'm soz but the Seppo's treated the Indigenous American's (as they like to called now) just as bad if not worse & still do & other countries across the world has done just as bad or worse. So our reputation is so poor, i didn't do it, my family didn't do it but I'm over every other country voicing their opinions about us Aussie's when other countries need to mind their business, look in their own backyards & sort their own problems out before commenting about us. Also calling them Aboriginals is very racist, they don't like being called that so yes research all u like, get their names called properly, don't look down ur nose at us Aussie's. Anyone would think we were like a Nazi v Jews situation. Put the blame on who it should go to, not me, not my family, not my mates, not my neighbours, we did nothing wrong & i personally hate the Union Jack on our flag & during our national anthem i refuse to look at the Union Jack, i only look at our beautiful but bogan Southern Cross that i have proudly tattooed on my back, it's a bogan tattoo but it's Aussie & i love nothing more than look up at the stars on a clear night to look at our Southern Cross. Cheers mate 🍻
