This is the most important album I've heard in years.

It's taken like four years for me to finally understand that this is all metaphorical. Evert song loosely follows a narrative about a failed relationship, relating it back to objects and rooms in a house (hence the name) I had a vague sense it was, but I could never connect the dots on my own. The first song, the storm, is the onset of trouble in a relationship. This song is literally "their relationship is on thin ice". I mean, for fuck sake, they're even moving opposite directions on THIN ICE. Just listen to this album with this theme in mind. 35, while not my favorite is the point where this fictional relationship literally collapses and falls apart. Notice the lyrical content in every song afterwards - usually about understanding, regret, pain, and then eventually catharsis and healing. Fucking brilliant.

I think your take on it is spot on, but I also think that the name of the album "Rooms of the House" and the several comparisons of a house and its rooms represent the narrator's relationship and the memories he feels when he looks into these rooms. In this song, it talks in the verses about his relationship and how he views the small things he sees as flaws ( his long hair, hairless face, lack of education/career choice) the same as the small fixer-up problems the house has. It could also represent how small problems (small house damages/small cracks on ice) can eventually pile on to the point where, like his relationship, everything collapses (ceiling collapsing/ falling through ice). But I could be totally wrong lol

Omg you like La Dispute and Brand New let's be best friends. But to be honest as great as it is, this is not my favorite on the album. My favorites are probably Stay Happy There, Hudsonville, MI 1956, or Woman (Reading). I can't pick just one.

this will probably end up sounding not the way I intended, but last year I was so depressed. the only bands I would listen to were la dispute and modest mouse. now when I listen to this type of music instead of getting nostalgia, and getting memories of bad times, I instead feel so calm. I struggle really bad with anxiety, and it's nice that now I can listen to la dispute and just feel super calm,, which is weird considering it's post hard core but nonetheless it does, and so I just wanted to say thank you

You can search their discography and find a song that exactly matches the way you feel right now. Even the tune somehow matches how you feel inside.

I've listened to this song over and over again. I just love how the whole falling through ice thing is a metaphor for a break-up. The more you think about the lyrics the more ways you see to look at them...

Why do I feel strange for loving this, the vibe makes me feel old.. Like I'm lost in the 90s , like a freak it bothers me that I love this music I feel so back in time and like a odd ball but now I see that I'm not the only one and if I was I wouldn't care anymore I am who I am I love what I love and my feelings are mine and I can't stop listing because I can only relate to true poetry and I can't change it.

This is possibly the 30th time listening to this song, ever since I discovered La Dispute 4 months ago its been wild, its sad , calming, joyful how this song makes me feel. 2 years ago I was in a bad place mentally and this song reminds me of that time, im doing better now. This song is brings so much emotions, its calming and there is hope. I love this song and band so much! Such an amazing band as well as Touche Amore.

Explain 5/4 I’m a drummer and never heard of a 5/4 timing in my life
@DrummerTrist Жыл бұрын
I’ve looked it up literally everywhere there’s no such thing as 5/4 anything
@DrummerTrist Жыл бұрын
Technically the snare hits three times and the high hat hits 5 so it would be a 3/5 you don’t count ghost strokes. They themselves count as a singular note it’s a 3 snare hit 5 high hat hit. So 3/5 is it actually. But that’s not even a thing either there’s no such thing as number slash number in music. It has never been written actually
@bee4590 Жыл бұрын
@@DrummerTrist i don't remember enough about my classical music training to explain _why,_ but you're wrong, respectfully, lol. 5/4 is an incredibly real and i would say well-known time signature-to the point where there's more than one song that cheekily references the fact that the song is in 5/4 in the title, '5/4' by Gorillaz and 'Take Five' by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. i trust my own (and Anders, the original poster)'s judgement on determining this song 5/4, but there's also an app that you can input songs to find time signature, BPM and key-and it also says this song is 5/4.
@ggrant4569 Жыл бұрын
@DadofBigDogs 4REAL when people say something like 5/4 they're referring to the time signature. The 5 is how many beats per measure and the 4 is the note that determines the pulse (4 = quarter note, 8 = eighth note, etc). You'd usually count 5/4 as 3 + 2 or 2 + 3 beats depending on where the strong pulses fall, but yeah it's definitely a real thing that makes sense

I almost hate how much this song, and album as a whole, hits home so much more after experiencing it first hand. I never clearly understood the words until my multiple year relationship and the house we lived in was themed around this concept in a way. Only to end recently after both of us trying to stay afloat with our separate issues as well as combined ones. Listening to this makes me almost here the words for myself, realizing I'm the one bearing the ice and breaking through it, only wanted to survive to make sure my once love and still friend is okay, and maybe selfish later to hear if she's still thinking of me...

+Shiloh Mangus I think he's using the literal story of him falling through ice as a metaphor. There's obviously more depth to a La Dispute song than just talking about an interesting story
