Nobel Prize

Nobel Prize

9 ай бұрын

The call from Stockholm woke Katalin Karikó at her home outside Philadelphia. Initially in disbelief, in this interview with Adam Smith, recorded soon after she had learnt of the award of the Nobel Prize for discoveries that accelerated the introduction of vaccines for Covid-19, she recalls her journey from Hungary and some of the setbacks on the path to the mRNA vaccines. "10 years ago I was here in October, because I was kicked out and forced to retire!" Her advice is to not to dwell on the problems: "You have to focus on the things you can change."

Unfortunately we still live in a sexist society, the prize is also assigned to the husband like Marie Curie, just as the best inventions have been by women, this she has done could be the best. And why not say so? Made by a woman

You forget to mention that a lot of scientists left the country because of WWII and later because of the communist regime where they couldn't have developed in the same way as in other countries. However, their success is also national success because they grew up in Hungary, and went to Hungarian schools and they all left the country when they were already adults. Karikó finished her PhD studies in Hungary, after that she left the country.@@grazglednica

She reminds me of Mme Marie Curie, who also suffered so much and was paid little and had to seperate the Uranium and Radium from pitchblende herself in the cold laboratory cellar. And finally was awarded two Nobel prizes, one in physics and one in chemistry. Or Maria Göppert-Mayer, who never was regocnized and got a professorship, although she did two seminal works (two-photon transitions and theory of the nucleus), until she got the Nobel Prize for the latter. Congrats and well deserved, Mme Kariko!
