Why do you carry the snake out alive? What’s the best way to dispatch the snake without destroying the full skin?

The best way to dispatch the snake for skin is to freeze it to death which is why we carry it out alive. When we mount the skin we can now keep the head attached to it!

In your video you describe the difference between a male and female snake. You also say not to flip rocks which is correct. I am a little upset that once you started to see that snake and said it was a female you continued to grab at it with hook and tongs. You are not supposed to touch females or disturb them. If you know enough about rattlesnakes and the legal size of them you also should not catch or tube small ones. Try to protect the resource. I am also against harvesting. The snake you killed for a skin a mount or food was probably 20 years old or older. Good job CLOWNS

Hey Tim, I dont tong females because if gravid it would harm developing babies so we agree on that also if you re watch the video I am extremely gentle with her and do the majority of the examination on the ground with her. You will be hard pressed to find a more conservation focused man in Pennsylvania than me. I follow all legal guidelines and stay well within the laws. I educate and spread the word about how beautiful these animals are and by handling that female I was able to teach not just those on that hike how important it is to preserve females but also any viewers. I am genuinely happy that you commented and feel so strongly about this as I do. But my hero steve irwin went hands on to show the beauty of reptiles and I try to take the same approach with as much care and respect as possible.

What is the range of timber rattlers in PA? I often visit McKean county, are they abundant up there too?

We have talked to a lot of people who have hunted their whole lives and they say when’s it’s warm and snakes are in their summer dens the males can travel up to 3 miles in a day from the den while females only 1 mile. Thanks for watching and subscribe if you haven’t!
