Will it start? Abandoned airboat with big block 454 GM/Chevy engine. Swapped the 4 barrel Holley carb for a Edelbrock off a 1983 Mustang GT 5.0. Distributor is off a 350 Chevy. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Good to see this running after so long. Very surprised this type of boat isn't fitted with a turbo diesel engine. No reduction gear would be needed, likely more torque than the 454 and more economical. Having said that I suppose it depends on the era this air boat was made. Greetings from Russia.. ❤️

Thanks for watching! I have asked that question many times myself. I believe when this boat was made diesel engines of the required HP were too heavy. While I have heard of it being done, most airboats have aircraft engines these days.

@@FixAndForget A radial would be perfect. A twin wasp 18 cylinder Pratt&Whitney. May need a bigger boat though.. 😁

@@Draxindustries1 Haha absolutely! I would love to see that. I think the standard is a 6 cylinder horizontal Lycoming engine, although by no means am I an expert.

People have put airboat props right on the car engine without reduction units you just can’t run at very high rpms you can only run up to 3200rpms at the most depending on the prop and definitely 3’000 rpms at the most it’s the low end torque where it helps

I greatly appreciate that info. Thanks for watching!

Its my understanding that most, i wouldn't say all cause i'm not 100% sure but most props have a 6000 rpm max speed. I used to work with a guy, his gator hunting airboat had a 500 ci caddy engine, no gear reduction box. Did the msd box have a chip in the box to limit the rpm?
@FixAndForget2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes, the MSD box did have a RPM limiter however the 454 in that configuration would not be able to rev high enough to hit it. I think you're also probably right about the props having a max RPM. Thanks for sharing that!

@@FixAndForget yeah I mean you can get a big block 454 direct drive to work or a 350 direct drive to work you just gotta have the torque right like the right camshaft and intake and carburetor
@jcwairboating35292 жыл бұрын
And the right heads and compression

What an awesome video. Can you post the unedited cranking? Id love to see all of it!!! Please make more startup videos. Especially when we can see what you do with the throttle pedal or controls to get it going. So fun to watch! Subscribed

Wow thanks so much! I will incorporate that into future videos. Check out some of the other first start videos on the channel too. Thanks for watching and the kind words!

@@FixAndForget absolutely. It’s so cool to see someone working controls, especially pedals, to get engines started. Also, any chance in you posting the full unedited cranking part of this airboat? I’d love to see it???

Thanks for watching! It will eventually be surplused by the government, but that is likely years away.
