Today we get the forgotten Vw Thing up on the lift to check the rusty chassis. How bad is it? We also crank the engine over in an attempt to start it for first time in years. Will it run? Next we will take this somewhat rare car on it's first drive in years. Follow along on this car's revival and its journey back on the streets.

One VW i bought , the guy selling it said "I'm sick of fixing it and now the bottom ends gone" and threw his hands in the air. so i bought it cheap. I got it off the trailer when I got home and went to start it. It started fine and ran well but it had a clung, clung sound coming from the motor but it didn't sound like the bottom end. It was a roll of insulation tape bouncing around in rhe fan and there was nothing wrong with the motor. Some times you win.

Oil screens: Earlier single relief cases had a smaller diameter oil pickup tube. Later ones had a larger diameter tube. Thus smaller and larger center holes in the oil screens.

Those repair plates are cheap and work. Dentist….yuk!!! I prefer NGK Timing? 😁 Points/Cond It’s a runner!!! Time to clean the acorns out of the shroud 😁 A dolly car…..😂 Grab the fender, they’re not cheap!! Still watching… Happy birthday my friend!!

When the Things came off the boat / train you name it I was the guy who put all the accessories on them. I found out they put an extra key for the ignition on the copper gas line behind the Fan shroud and body. It was just one key . Never a fan of them or the Flat air cooled engines.

That knocking sounded higgly piggly…..not constant. Or, of course it could be transferring quality on you tube. Anyway. I was thinking Abner, put a new alternator on it, without pulling the shroud or engine. Not getting the washers on the fan nut correctly. Coming loose. Put a glove on and give it a reach around, and see if that fan is loose.

I bought a bug years ago from a truck driver that said he knows the engine was blown by listening it. I bought it and started it at home and you can hear metal grinding. I removed the fan belt and the noise was gone. Generator bearings were bad

I have often used NGK, very good plugs. It is not easy to tell on camera but that does not sound like con rods to me. A loose shroud bolt or just acorns and other mouse junk. She is alive and runs so take that as a win. As for the rust it is not that bad which is what we said in the first place. Take care Jason. 👍👍

10:20 The NGK plugs are great. They are gentle on the threads, and they aren’t resistor plugs. So, picture this in your mind. Using the 1k resistor ends….with those crappy new Bosch resistor plugs. Double resistance means? That’s right , not as hot spark. There will be someone here that will say, “why that’s not what that means, because of the double neutrino enzyme calculus electron, it will be the same”. All, I’m saying….is in the book. Remember the book? Yeah…that book. Those engines use non resistance plugs and 1K resistance reusable wire ends. And It wouldn’t be in the book that way, unless it was true. So, what I am saying is this. The NGK plugs are a great alternative to finding original German non resistor plugs on $$$amba. Also. Just a FYI. Way back in Nam, when these were being built. They came with solid core copper “packard 440” stuff. And reusable ends both on the plug side and cap side. So, you could just …make… your own set. When they wore out. If you bought a spool of that solid core stuff. Sweet huh? About 40 years ago, I would go through the pick a part yards, and pick these plug ends. Now…pretty hard to find. Again, thank you for you and Dubwerkz for sharing. 😀

How about removing the fan belt to determine if there is something in the fan or housing? KISS Surely you know you don't need a light to static time, why is it so hard for guys to set the points, static time and check the valves when trying to start an unknown motor? Asking for a fiend.

that vid was a joke mostly but we thought it was a panel. Neither one us noticed the windows on the inside , i just noticed the rust there and showed that in my vid. He looked it over really good that night he bought it and had previously seen it where i found it. A commenter noticed the windows on the 1st vid of it . The whole 5150 plate was my idea lol. I think he is going to keep it as a panel anyway

You ever try and make a video about cut , weld , grind x 1,000 ? Recording mechanical and metal work adds 3x the time you spend doing the repair . Add 6-8 hours of editing and uploading . I try to mix it though , that’s why I like recording at Larry’s shop . He can do and explain the job while I record. Also when you suck at repair work it takes even longer to record it haha. And lastly , man , it’s just NICE to enjoy working on the car without the camera on sometimes :))
