First Step Towards Self Sufficiency

🌱 In today's video, I show my first steps into becoming more self-sufficient! I put up a greenhouse and prepare some cultivation beds for my vegetables! I actually even plant my first broccolis! 🌱
Working towards self sufficiency is something I've wanted to do for a while now, so it feels really good to have started the progress! Will I be able to grow everything on my own? Of course not. But I'll try my best to get as much out of my garden as possible!

Daniel - thank you for sharing your journey and for your vulnerability. You have chosen a hard path, but I applaud you for it. Keep plugging away. Remember that in the hard times they never last; it is an up and down journey, and for every down there is an up. Just keep going, do not give up. So exciting! I'm glad you're feeling better and the days will be easier on you. Winter can be so beautiful but it can also be oppressive. I'm moving to a rural area in the mountains and I plan on having my own giant greenhouse as an escape that I can garden in all year long. It's a lot of work but I think you are already enjoying the benefits. For a novice gardener you are amazingly thoughtful about your plants and how to care for them. Don't forget to give yourself some grace for all the trial and error that comes along with the process of growing food. Take notes on what works and things to avoid down the road. I can't wait to see how it all starts turning out. The joy on your face is a gift 🙂

Hi Kats! Thank you for such a nice comment! And no, I definitely wouldn't want it to blow away! It would make me so sad! Right now it's only pinned down with the "tent stick" (the ones you use for a tent) that was included, and they're not strong enough! Kinda weird how you don't get things included that will work! 😅 I was away yesterday to meet a friend, and was worried the whole time since it was blowing quite a bit! But everything was fine when I got back home. Tomorrow I will make my own things to hold it in place properly! ☺️ Wish you a beautiful day! 🥰

Hi Daniel. Your homestead journey begins. WOO HOO !! The greenhouse looks nice. I'm sure it will be productive. When Aurora was in Iceland at the KEXP Hostel for a performance, amid the show she took off her shoes saying, "Life is better without shoes !!' Here in Montreal, our apartment is 17 stories up, and we look West out our living room windows. The sun tracks from left to right daily, across our viewing sightline,. As the year progresses, the sun sets farther over. We can see for miles on a clear day. And the sunsets are never the same two days running. We go from blue sky, to orange, to pink, to light blues. I've seen pinks as you were seeing it there. There are some really PRIME sunset spots on the far side of the mountain, I've seen over the years. The sky changes nightly here. I'm sure the greenhouse will be successful. Now to speak to mum and dad about that "List of Things to do" and see which ones they will sign off on for summer projects. I think you know now, what needs to be done first, right ?? Frozen poops in an outhouse and frozen shower stalls and walking to do them in deep snow, does mean things to ones mind.

For the next winter: get a ToilettePot. Its something so so cool if you are living on places where are not warm & comfortable bathrooms. You cab always choose when you want to empty & you have only to make a hole in the snow, not like me, i have to make them in the earth, but its the best for gardening. I really love my toilettepot 🙂 You have done a really good job. Thank you for inspiring, i think about to do the same for the colder season here in Portugal

Daniel, dear friend, for a beautiful person like you are, no outfit looks bad. Being I a person who doesn't like the cold, you don't know how much I understand what you are saying and your emotion. Next winter surely find you better prepared and perhaps, why not, less alone. ( sorry if I'm being invasive). If you look in perspective, life has always been on your side sweetie. 🌱🥦CONGRATULATIONS Daniel ❤you have done a WONDERFUL JOB 💯 28:28 you can try gradually exposing your young plant to outside: 1rst day just a few hours . If that goes well give them longer & longer time outside until you know for sure they can handle it, then put them in the ground if it will not go below freezing overnight Here in Alberta Canada🇨🇦 we still have overnight frosts right until June 😮 Sending Good Luck & BIG LOVE 🍀💞

Hi Daniel good luck with your food growing! In March and April I turn my conservatory into a greenhouse as the sun is finally high enough to reach and it gets warm. Strangely some seeds grew this year and some didn't. Maybe I get a greenhouse one day.. Well done you. I have cardboard down in veg patches outside we call it a no dig garden. As u I am glad winter is over. It was long here too. Unlike you we had only some crispy snowy weeks and mainly this wet damp cold which I find worse. As with you my main source of heating is a fire a bit easier as yours as I have a multihull stove and heat with smokeless coal. And unlike you I have a prer bathroom. We had an amazing rainbow cloud earlier this (nacreous clouds). It was amazing I saw it one morning from the sofa and ran out in the frosty garden in my pyjamas to get photos. Nature never stops to amaze me. May you have a great harvest and may we have a wonderful summer. As always sending you the warmest wishes from the North of Scotland. Take care!!

dear Daniel, it is so much fun for me to see your creativity in gardening❤...you can do it with enough time and on your own,so the best decisions can come to you by themselves....(that is what I see as a gardener by myself) I can also imagine that the force of your body and mind ,needed to come through your rough and long (wonderful) winter let you break out in tears ...because of the end of struggling...you live an extreme life,but your are part of this nature now and I think every coming winter will go better and better a little bit ...thank you soo much for this video.. you lovely man...and your hair and your rubber shoes are a good part of us human beings😅....

Daniel, gorgeous video! The pink skys were gorgeous. Great job on the greenhouse. I worry that the tiny greenhouse is too opaque to allow the sun in. I live where it is 96 degrees Fahrenheit every day in the summer and plants still grow. On the downside, you have to water plants more often when its so hot outside. I can't wait to see your harvest.

The Green house is nicely set up n the brocolli's look healthy n in a good place my favourite moment was the skating view n that stunning view of somewhat orange clouds :) happy to know that now you're able to go out in the sun n can also have open baths in a flowing water .Enjoy the days ahead Daniel ♡

Tja tja min vän! Daniel, your plants and greenhouse look amazing! I didn’t know about removing the first 2 leaves so that’s very helpful. I think your plants are so healthy because you radiate love! You are such a gentle, kind person. I too am careful not to injure any worms. I also don’t like it when an insect gets stuck somewhere so I do my best to safely remove them. We are kindred spirits! Only if there is much rain or cool weather in summer i'll advice you to rather close the greenhouses with the zip so not everything will fly or be washed away but after this, there should be no problem at all with it! I just love your videos and your determination to build a greenhouse and to grow your own food. You're a pure and lovely soul and I am so happy you can live your dream life. I hope you will have a shower one day in your house, you so deserve that. You could start a crowdfunding for that (I would love to donate) or isn't it possible to build a bathroom in your house?

Hi! 🤗 I don't think it's possible to build a bathroom in the house. It is physically maybe, but I don't think my parents want one, to be honest. Since this is their summer house, they want to keep things simple. More pipes and plumbing would make things more expensive and more to take care of. And an outhouse work well in the summer. 😊 I also wouldn't afford to pay for any of it, since I barely make ends meet. And if I would get anything over, I would probably save it for a potential house of my own! Thanks for your comment and for watching! Take care! 🥰

@@DanielErik Hi Daniel ,I've not got any veg this year I've just been so busy with moving my horses into new stables and loads of jobs related,and still on going. So it's mainly flowers,and all frome seed. I've so far grown pansies,Gorditia,Marigold, Night scented stock,sweet Williams.sweet peas,few others but can't remember at present. I do take cuttings aswell from friends gardens, and winter before last I planted 25 Acorns, and they have all survived and ready to plant out,can never have enough trees. Big hugs from a warm southern UK.💜

Hi Daniel! Your greenhouse is looking great! I planted broccoli last year for the first time and they need quite a lot of space. I believe they also dont like it too hot because they easily go to flower then. Another think I found out whit gardening is that there is never enough soil. 😂It is lovely to have spring and light back again! Take care!
