Regulations in the USA may vary in each state. In NC the regulation states IF you are collecting plants with the intent to sale we ARE required to get a Nursery License OR a certificate depending on how we intend to ran as a nursery. Shipping has nothing to do with getting a nursery set up, the intent to sell does. Shipping however, we have a lot of other stuff to go through to ship to the west coast from the East or Middle USA. It has a lot more requirements BUT the west coast can ship across the US without many issues. Also in my area to sell at our farmers market we have to have a business license, a tax exemption number and it just isn't that simple in my county, although our rules maybe NC statewide I never checked into that when we got set up to sell at the Farmers Market. We didn't have to have a nursery license to sell annuals at the FM only a farm business license. I do know however in some states it's easier to sell than others because I have talked to friends who did. Most important of all IS CHECK YOUR STATE and COUNTY REGULATIONS, they can tell you what you will need and tell you about any Federal regulations. Yep, working on becoming a nursery as I stated on another one of your videos. Been getting liners in, and ordered pots today as well. Almost there and hopefully will be getting inspection scheduled for October 1, geeze this is scary! Wish me LUCK. Thanks for the video Jason and not trying to be rude, but if folks seriously want to start a nursery or any business for that matter they really should check out there state and local laws, rules and regulations before anything else, even advice from their best friend, mom, dad, sister, bother, aunt, uncle......you get what I'm saying right? Research for themselves not advise from anyone even if they trust what the person tells them.😂 I have a friend in Canada, in her area she doesn't need anything until she has sales of $30,000.00! Must be nice LOL 😂

Thanks for the details - and this is exactly why I don't want to advise much beyond "know your own local, state and federal regulations", because even what little I said is going to be a little (or very) wrong in some jurisdictions. And just because I don't need to register my nursery at all (except for tax purposes) doesn't mean that the federal laws have no application. If they declare a regulated pest in my area (like they have in the Niagara region) , all plant and soil movement may be restricted as they see fit. Some have asked me why I haven't been shipping to the US. It's 100% because I don't want take on the additional burden of phytosanitary requirements. Very best of luck with your new nursery! I'll have my fingers crossed for your inspection.

Great info. I'm in Illinois and been trying to research what license I need to sell again, at my front door nursery. Just selling about $2000 worth a season. To be honest I'm afraid to have an inspection because some of the boxwood hedges on my property probably has blight. I'm Not selling any boxwood. Any information Illinoiers??

@@oliviatrue2907 Just look up Nursery License in Illinois it should pull up what's required. Basically if you sell any plant, in the US you're a business selling plants no matter the amount, at least that's what I have gathered researching nursery licenses and certificates. Good Luck 👍😊

Tks so much Jason. Very kind of you to give courage to those of us who dream of a nursery. I'm close to 80 yrs now and have gardened since i was about 5 yrs of age. I have 4 adult children and several Grans and they all encourage me to continue gardening. Our veggie garden and fruit trees fed us when they were young. I was an Artist/ Art Therapist/ Art Educator but, now with co-vid and cancer treatments I can't teach in person. I do have an herb garden and also a flower garden from which I enjoy sharing my herbs and flowers with those who are ill, especially with cancer. I've been entertaining the idea of a small simple Nursery to support my hobby. I started propagating plants from what I currently have growing prolifically. I'm loving the work of it all. I am training for teaching Art online to children and would like to include teaching gardening. I've been praying for discernment as to what would be a Ministry that is part of my Plan for which God created me. Your video is supportive of my inspirations for Ministry that will also support my few needs in this life.

Hi, I have always wanted to grow grapes and experiment with them to produce a sweet tasting grape to make home made wine. So we picked up a plant from the local box store and planted it and are waiting for the grapes to ripen then to give them a taste. This has inspired me to take things a bit further like graft grape vines, plant different types of grapes and blend the end product. Then if all goes well, look into installing a trellis or two with different vines. This has lead me to trying my first root ball install on a few of our evergreens (I think they are blue spruce) which I did today and am totally stoked about it! Okay, so this is where I'm at. Now, coming across your video has peaked my interest on selling some of what I can produce. I don't know anything about plants nor the science behind them so it looks like I will need to do some reading on the subject. Its not like I''m looking to take on and build to total nursery, however I do want to have some knowledge on how this stuff works. Is there any preferred reading you can recommend? I appreciate your time putting this and other videos together. Thanks!

Thanks - I don't think I've ever been intentionally burned by a gardener. I give them the benefit of the doubt and replace anything that didn't make it. Lots of great info, thank you!! I have a question about the humidity domes. When is the right time to remove them and let the young plant be in open air? I once had some luck with a young plant that was sprouting leaves ( it was from a cutting and didn't grow roots, just pushed out some leaves!) and when I removed the dome, they somehow shriveled up and the plant died.
@TheRealHonestInquiry
@TheRealHonestInquiry 3 жыл бұрын
With no roots humidity is the only thing keeping the plant hydrated and it sounds like you took that away too extremely... you need to learn when the right time is for each plant and do things way more gradually, for example take the dome off for an hour the first day after you see roots then put it back, keeping an eye on your plant and watching for reactions such as drooping etc., the next day maybe 2 hours, gradually increasing the time with the dome off over a few days so your plant isn't shocked with a huge variation in environmental condition. This goes for other environmental factors as well, light, temperature, water etc. gradual changes, or if you really want to learn take the goldilocks approach and take 3 or more of the same plant, make one the middle ground and the other two closer to one extreme

This video came perfectly on time. I started doing small scale selling on Facebook marketplace just in September 1st with the hope that in the meantime I can figure out how to get a small boutique plant shop up and running. Today, however, I was overwhelmed with entrepreneur resources and possible home business permits and all that. This video calmed me down a lot by laying out steps and finding that I sort of started just as you said. My biggest worry right now is that I’m having so much trouble trying to find out regulations and licensing requirements. Almost to the point of thinking I should stop altogether 😥 I won’t give up of course, but any tips on finding the right regulations for an urban Alberta starter?

Brilliant video and so inspiring ! Where should we go to get more information about regulations and licensing needs for say Ontario?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 3 жыл бұрын
1) Local. You should find out what your city/municipality/region says about setting up for sales (if you plan on selling from your property). There also may be local ordinances around greenhouse structures etc. 2) Provincial. www.ontario.ca/page/rules-greenhouse-operators They look mainly aimed at when you're setting up for a larger facility, so there may not be much for you to worry about at small scale. 3) Federal. You don't need to collect GST/HST until your sales are over 30k, but you still need to report income. CFIA is the federal authority for plant health/protection, but they won't have much to say for a small operation unless you plan on shipping plants out of province, or if you're growing in an area with regulated pests (like the Niagara region).

Regarding roses, after having a failure rate of 95% in soil due to stem rotting, i have found out the best way is to use 2-3 mm wood chips instead. Now i have only 5% failure rate (on small sample size) and definitely no more rotting. For calcification no soil nutrients are needed anyway. Just sufficient moist and a bit of airflow. What do you think?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stefan. I'll have to try the small wood chips as a medium - and I have a supply of them to work with. My rate is pretty stable (depending on variety and growth stage) around 90% with a composted bark-based potting soil. I think you have a good point to make - if your current medium (combined with your moisture/humidity) isn't working, it's time to change it up. Yes, no nutrients until after early root development, and yes, air circulation is important to reduce the risk of rot.

Hi Jason, I saw this video just now and was wondering what do you do with rose plants that did not sell? How do you price a rose plant competitively? And should you offer after sales follow up or plant care tips? Thank you!
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymund - great questions. I continue to market plants that don't sell throughout the season. Some annuals and herbs have a pretty short "selling window" before they overgrow - and I certainly won't hold them over from year to year. For that reason, I try hard not to overproduce short-lived plants. That said, if they begin to deteriorate (or sales aren't promising), I compost them right away so that I don't spend time watering and caring for them. Perennials and shrubs I hold and pot up into a larger size if the condition warrants it. Pricing is tricky. In my market, discount retailers sell inexpensive bare-root roses early in the season - and for less money than I want to compete with. I price above them, and more in line with what an independent garden center would charge. On uncommon roses, I could charge a bit of a premium as well. For plant care tips, I offer my KZfaq channel. Okay, so it's shameless self-promotion, but it really was the initial reason I started the channel - so that I don't have to repeat the same care tips many times over, and because I don't think I can compress every topic onto the back of a selling tag or a brief "care-sheet".
@raymundsantos2324
@raymundsantos2324 3 жыл бұрын
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you Jason for your answer! I'm planning on a small scale rose plant reselling business. How if I may ask, do you monitor market prices so that you won't underprice or overprice your product? Sometimes buyers are canvassing first before they buy and they won't comment if your pricing is more than they would want. Thank you for your time! Stay safe!

After you started to get your nursery up and running did you place it under an LLC or are you running it as partnership/sole proprietorship? Or does Canada not have those type of entity structures?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm

Thanks Louis - we're keeping it simple for now (sole proprietorship) until we see a clear advantage to another structure.

Im in Florida during our "winter" sales go down how do u make up for that? What can I do during this down time?

Hi Rose - seasonal peaks and valleys are a common concern for all plant businesses. You can only fight so hard against consumer buying habits. Some growers keep selling (and just modify their assortment to better match demand). I usually focus on the business itself through summer, fall and winter: take cuttings, grow them on, order and stratify seeds, visit garden clubs, work on plant tags and listings on my website.

Its a little bit funny, but getting good quality wood-based OM in a soil mix is problematic here .. and it looks like that problem may turn into a great business opportunity for me, as I've been working on developing my own. How does the marketing line "Hey, wanna buy some dirt?" sound?

Not a bad line of business. Little bit of legwork to get started, but if you can offer something unique to the marketplace, you'll have excellent customer retention.

Hi, could you give me some advice about pots? How do you decide between terracotta etc. and plastic?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Terracotta is permeable to water, so it tends to dry out. Same goes, actually, for those fabric grow bags (but much faster). Plastic is long lasting and doesn't dry down quite so fast, but not always the most attractive. The way I like best for ornamental specimens is to nest a plastic nursery pot into something more ornamental (like a ceramic pot)

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm This may sound a bit silly but because I try to source my pots and things from thrift shops, I don't always find it easy to fit plastic pots into them :) So I may have to drill some holes eventually.

Thanks Tina - sounds like you've been busy! So far I've found customers to be fairly insensitive to postage rates when they're looking for something specific.

What would happen if I used salt water to water my plants?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 жыл бұрын
For most plants, this would be very stressful. High levels of sodium in the soil will make water and nutrient uptake much more difficult. I think back in Roman times, salting the earth was used as a way to damage agricultural output in the area for years after a military conquest. There might be a few plants that are genetically more tolerant of salt, but for the most part, I'd avoid it.

In Maine you need a license to sell any type of plant, which is ridiculous. So, in order to get a nursery license you need a business license, and then a sales tax license, which also means a FEIN, and a bank account... it really is stupid. This state does everything it can to hinder people from being productive, including taxing the hell out of revenue, Excise Tax, existing property tax, business tax, and then they wonder why the state is so run down with busted ass trailers and garbage everywhere, because they force people like myself to leave.

I'm with you on this - it's a much looser regulatory framework here in Canada, and it allows all sorts of small specialty nurseries to pop up without too much fuss.

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm it's almost like our government hates us... you Canadians can come down here off the coast of Maine and catch any size lobster you want, but Americans have to throw the larger ones back. It's crazy. Thanks for the reply!
