First Swarm of 2021 - Part 1: taking the swarm

There has been a slow start to spring in Devon, with a cold, persistent, easterly wind keeping temperatures down through much of April and into May. This is my first swarm on Dartmoor, and it is a good size prime swarm on a discarded Christmas tree, close to the ground, so it could hardly have been an easier take.
This is Part 1, while Part 2 deals with hiving the same swarm in a top bar hive, less than half an hour later.

In the Northwest wouldn't be surprised if we get first swarms in middle of July, what a cold start it has been this year. Although bees have taken every opportunity this year to try and get going.

I am looking forward to building hives and collecting swarms this year to boost my apiary. I’m quite new at this and started with two built Langstrom hives and purchased Nucs. But in seeing your horizontal hives and top bar systems I am getting more excited to branch out. I have 10 acres for just sheep and bees..the sheep use about half and the rest is open fields for growing mixed pasture hay that is heavy with three seasons of flowering clovers, alfalfa and vetch. I planted wildflowers for every season (not Winter) in the wetland area near the main apiary and hope this will be enough. I think I could have bought 40 hives with bees for what I spent building up the flora for the bees!

Had my 1st last week but only a cast. I did see a prime disappear out of one of my hives this week 😱

Would you ever consider using a cordless vacuum for collecting a large and unruly swarm?

Hi i have watched most of your video's and learnt loads .just wondering,Is it too late in the year to get a hive and some bee's I've been thinking about getting some for ages, I've been researching and reading up , watching your video's. I feel confident enough to go ahead but need to know what time of year is best.
