I heard once that you should avoid using aluminum in hives, especially in areas that could would contact honey. Is that not a concern?
@phillee28143 күн бұрын
None of the aluminium is in an area which would contact honey unless you scrape the burcomb off and crush it. Plus, of course, aluminium is vermin-proof. I'd add stainless steel mesh to the outside of the drains to keep other insects, mice, and rats out, and make some plugs for any entrances that aren't in use by the bees - I'm a firm believer in single entrances, as they'd rarely have additional entrances in the wild (so they can and do cope perfectly well with just one 2"/50mm entrance or even smaller, and still dry nectar into honey in any climate that bees can survive in), and additional entrances rarely get guarded properly.
@BarefootBeekeeper2 күн бұрын
The aluminium will never make direct contact with honey or nectar. My only concern is that the bees may be able to nibble through the thin foil that is bonded to the foam, but if they do, I can easily patch it with aluminium tape.
@JonathanDowding3 күн бұрын
I have used celotex to make Layens hives and nucs, but I've used it to cover pine boxes (18mm pine from old wardrobes, book cases etc) as I didn't think the bees would like the foil inside. I will have to try just PIR board next time! Made the lids same as Phil's, no wood to rot.

vino farm in Canada, has a very similar set up to the "James hive" though he uses "Langstroth" hives, brood box is extra deep, made of wood & insulation, rather than "lego blocks" with standard Langstroth supers added for spring & summer.
@ximono29 күн бұрын
Looks a bit like the standard hives we have in Norway, made of thick insulated XPS. Except we use a mesh floor and a low entrance, but it could easily be adapted to the James system. Interesting design!

Better to keep you entrance at the end of the hive and keep the brood near the end.

I suggest that the blocks where exposed be painted with bitumen paint and the angles set down on mastic. I still prefer the full ZEST, version as simpler to work, but James had a load of wood hives to use up and it does that very well.

I tried to fine the light block here in the US but only found what I thought was a commercial producer in Florida but didn't find a supply channel. I'm sticking with Layens for now.

@ximono29 күн бұрын
@@BarefootBeekeeperAnd selection for varroa resistance I suppose? James mentioned measuring mite load and mating queens with whatever drones are in the area, so it sounds a bit like what Reinertsen has been doing here in Norway to achieve a highly resistant bee without any treatment. A large/wide gene pool is the key. He calls his bees mongrels too, and while they're not as docile as Buckfasts, they're definitely very nice and manageable (though more variable).
@BarefootBeekeeper4 күн бұрын
@@ximono neither Bill nor James do any selective breeding, but rely on the apparent effect of the high humidity of the hive to keep mites under control. I have written a full review of Bill's book, including a discussion of the humidity controversy, which should be available soon on my site at biobees.com.

Hey Phil, it’s nice to see you as always but, I wondering if you’ve retired from producing videos. I pray and hope all is well. You help so many people and I’m thankful for you. Do you also have skep colonies? I’m asking because of a previous video where you used one to collect a swarm.

Thanks for your kind words. I will be posting again very soon! I don't have skeps at the moment and no immediate plans to keep bees in them, but they are great for catching swarms.

some people that use a mist bottle use a solution of sugar water and lemon grass oil. i used this several years ago when i had bees and it seemed to work well. it has been explained (don't remember where i read it) that besides the positive effect of the lemon grass oil, when the bees get the sugar water on them they become preoccupied with licking the sugar from each other and as a result pay less attention to the intruder. does this make sense ? i used a smoker once but it was a hassle and it did not seem to be any better than the mist. i'm certainly not an expert in any of this.

HI Phil, love this trailer, I have very recently bought a conway trailer tent and intend to do pretty much what you have done. How has it fared out in the past few years. I am particularly interested in the skin you have used. Has it retained its weatherproof properties?. Great job. I hope you have had loads of adventures.

I sure am happy you are bringing the black bees back. There are absolutely no more left nor available in North America. I would say Apis Mellifera Mellifera is extinct here. The last one seen here was a fossil found in 2017 in a dry lake bed. They named her apis mellifera neoartica but she is absolutely identical to apis mellifera mellifera. The last living ones in North America were in the 1990s.

This is one question that you answered,,, Do bees swarm in the rain? Or do they wait for perfect weather to swarm? Human logic would suggest the latter due to the bees being smarter than we give credit. Plus most swarms if not all I have had it’s been in fair weather. We know bees don’t fly in increment weather to collect nectar. So the lesson here is if you find queen cells and the weather is looking rainy… best do something about it regardless of the weather. Hi Phil. You inspired me years ago to build a TBH and I have had a few colonies. After some experience, I find 1-1/2" wide top bars to be too narrow. How wide can I go? Thanks for all of the work that you do!
@boomer62743 ай бұрын
You mention in your don't buy or build a hive until... from 7 years ago that three entrance holes on each side toward the ends is for swarm control, but your instructions for how to build a top-bar hive shows three in the middle of each side with one hole toward the end. Have you discovered that the three on each side offset to opposite sides are disadvantageous in some way?
@BarefootBeekeeperАй бұрын
I still use 3 each side. You may have an old copy of the plans.
