I just finished the book, and I was literally sobbing when she talked about how they barely had anything to eat, and how she imagined her family members dying or how they would all survive. And especially when her Pa died, I lost it.

1.5 to 3 million people died. the Khmer Rouge were psychopaths who thrived on torture and pain. Cambodia would be a completely different country in today's times if this genocide hadn't taken place and they killed anybody who was remotely intelligent. I've seen a tower of human skulls, clothes and bones still to this day surface from the ground when it rains. this film is from a little girls point of view, its harrowing and worse thing is, it wasn't that long ago in terms of history. I think it did the book justice

@Eric Lee They adopted communism and acted on it. Even if US destroys their country doesn't mean its all because of them. US nuked japan and fought war in south korea and destroyed Germany but they turned out wonderful. Its the ideas that people embrace. I know because my country, India, embraced democratic Socialism after the colonials left and left hungry when countries like S. Korea and even Hongkong that adopted capitalism and thrived to prosperity.

God , I wish more movies were made like this. We had refugees from Cambodia staying near our house in Ft walton Beach, Fl in 1980. The were staying in military issue tents. I had no idea what they suffered until I saw this. So much crap comes out of Hollywood and this is a real diamond in the ruff.

I read the book during my first trip to Cambodia in a bus going to Siem Reap, and an old Monk was explaining me some parts of that story because he saw i was almost crying while reading... When i finished the book i thought (was in 2010) that it has to be turned into a movie. Angie made it and the movie is quiet good but not as detailed as the book. Still i really "enjoyed" it. Also the second Book of lounge ung "a daughter if Cambodia remembers" is a good one. Everyone should read the book or watch the movie before going to Cambodia.

I remember visiting the places in phnom penh where some of the horrors of the Khmer Rouge took place. This movie and her memoir were testaments of it. They really did a great job with it. I showed my elder family members the movie years ago and when they’re watching they kept telling me that that was how it’s like back then. They didn’t realize it’s a movie they thought it was a documentary footage because the TV often played those old footage from time to time.

Everyone knows phillipines and vietnam, thailand and that's the first thing they think of when they think of southeast asia so it's sad. We use to be powerful and well known but im very happy that theres some recignisement

@@mostlymessingabout Sadly there is much racism here against vietnamese and if you tell people your one there's bound to be some racism.
