I agree, a good mechanic is always good to have. Why is it that it always seems to be the ones wearing headphones who are walking down the middle of the path and cant hear the bell. I have this problem a lot.

Even before I bought my e-bike I figured out that I had better learn how to work on it. U-tube has made it so easy to learn repairs. I wish we had it in my younger days. Get comfortable pulling wrenches on your bike. For me owning a e-bike is a lot more than throwing my leg over the seat and going. Despite what I’ve said I have nothing against your practical advice about having a good mechanic.

I did get one (XP3.0) last November. I just turned 77 and love it. I have a bike store 30 miles from me that I use. They work on these. They are great to work with. They are a big shop that sells hundreds of bikes and a separate repair shop inside the store. They do it all.

I try to tell people all the time if your not handy you really should try to buy your bike from a bike shop. Christ if you buy online the warranty work basically is they ship you the parts if your lucky enough to have them offer to pay some labor, you still have to find someone to do it for the money they allow. It so worth paying an extra $200 for it really to go and if you have a problem they’re there to help you, plus you get to ride it before you buy. Nice video Jerry

First thing I do when I get a new bike is pull the wheels off and crank apart and put a nice layer of grease in the bearings, squirt some oil down the cables, oil the chain, etc to make sure all moving parts are protected and moving freely. And I repeat this every 6-12 months or more, depending on how much I ride.

Hi Jerry, Thanks for the very important bike tips. My closest bike shop that will work on my ebike is 46 miles away. I have several bike shops that are closer, but either they do not work on ebikes or only ebikes that they sell. I have contacted them and plan to bring my bike in before Spring and have them go over everything. I try to do most of the maintenance myself, but I think having a pro give my bike an inspection, is worth the time and investment. Hope you got what you wanted for Christmas as well.

In the middle of nowhere, Texas, or other places, you may also consider an ebike that is field serviceable. Mag wheels take some of the tedium out of wheel care, and even though they are better in some ways, hydraulic brakes can be a hassle when you have problems away from home. Mechanical disk brakes are okay, and the pads for them aren't that hard to replace. Cables aren't difficult if you know what to do and have a few basic tools in your kit. Not many places around here will even touch an ebike. It's a shame really. It's an untapped market on the horizon.

Hi Jerry, love the conversation you carried on on this video. I would like to suggest that as a long term rider by the way you converse, I would like to point out just a few things while you were going over things. To set a good example not to mention that you are videoing yourself. You went through several intersection with crosswalk signals. For the sake of those that are either new or the very young ones that are still learning. That waiting until the crosswalk signal turns would be the appropriate thing to do. Please don't take offense to this point. I just recently had a friend that got hit because he didn't pay attention. Lucky he only got a good scrape on the leg but still. It is easy to loose sight of safety while doing videos and your trying to do 1,000 things at once. Bike safe and great job on the video too you brought a lot of good points for those who are or about to be E-bikers. PEACE!

I put over 10k miles on my first ebike. Only major issues were batteries and tires. My second one I have had for 10 months and have over 12k miles. The main issue has been tires, I wear them out pretty fast LOL. I now went to motorcycle type tires and hope to get more miles out of it. That being said, it is a good thing if you are handy around some tools. With patience most people can learn to work on their bikes. I am learning new stuff all the time. But it is good advise having a place you can take it to and say, help me I am stuck. Ebikes are so cheap now, I think just replacing it may be an option. Gives you an excuse to get a new bike ; )

I'm in the UK and hear and read about real problems with some bikes bought online and there's no real support if there's a problem. Looking around for an ebike shop within 20 miles of home that sells and has in stock a bike within a sensible budget (GBP1300/USD1600) is virtually zero! Plenty of stockist for the £2K+ bikes though!! Needing to drive for more than 2 hours and to book a hotel for an overnight stay to test ride a bike is less than encouraging no matter how much we'd want one.

I have a Niner Rip e9. It has a Bosch performance CX motor and all supporting electonics are by Bosch. Any bike shop that works on ebikes can service it. The problems happen when you buy a bike with parts from manufacturers noone has ever heard of. The problem then becomes sourcing them. Best to stick with well known manufacturers such as Bosch, Shimano, Bafang, etc. May pay a little more up front but will make things a lot easier down the road. Also, while hub motors are cheaper and do the job if things go wrong one must consider the labor cost that will acrue by having to have someone disassemble the rear wheel just to access the motor to work on it and then relace the wheel when done. This takes time and times costs money. With a mid drive you simply just drop the motor.
