The Falcons had, what some people consider, a top 5 player EVER for years in Deion. Yet, we most remember what he did after he left and became a mercenary for the Niners and the Cowboys. The Falcons' best moment was the worst Super Bowl loss in history. Falcons don't matter

The two QBs that are battling for the GOAT title didn’t start!! Do ppl honestly think that the Chiefs didn’t know Mahomes was better than Alex Smith the moment he stepped on the practice field?! @segagenesis7708 you are assuming Penix is going to sit for 2 to 3 years. Maybe he will. So what? People are making it sound like the next 10 years are ruined bc the Falcons didn't select an edge rusher or a CB in the first round. That argument is dumber than the people who are saying that Penix is going to lead Atlanta to multiple Super Bowls. Neither is true. So chill out and quit buying this media hype about what an AWFUL decision it was to draft Penix. Falcons have Couisns. Falcons have Penix. Falcons are still the odds on favorite to win the division next year. Quarterback is the most important position on a football team and it isn't even close. And the Falcons could still trade Penix in a year or two or three if they want to and get a lot more for him than they would have got with whatever 1st round pick that they supposedly should have drafted. This was actually a genius move by Atlanta. And the billionaires who are the owners of these teams know it. The Falcons organization ruffled a lot of feathers and ruined a lot of plans/trades that involved multiple teams.

When so many later round QBs become good, can’t we realize this is not a chose the most coveted and he is most likely to be successful? It seems that a gun for an arm is not as important as ability to process under pressure. A good offensive line is more important than the most accurate passer. It seems the more QBs you choose, you’re in better shape to get a good one

Great pick! Everyone believes in Cousins for some reason. He’s older and coming off an injury and has never been great! The assumption is that Cousins is the better quarterback! They had others picks to address other needs. The organization owes no explanation or notification to Cousins. He better come to camp ready to compete! The money is not our concern. They really can’t be right. If Kirk is what they thought and gets them to the playoffs the next few years they’ll ask “why didn’t we get someone that could help us compete now and strengthen the roster?” If the rookie takes the job in the next year you’re then hamstrung to the Krik contract and lose the biggest benefit of a good QB on a rookie contract. This is splitting your pants on the fence.
@segagenesis7708

Exactly. If you’re Atlanta, you didn’t just realize that you love Penix, a few weeks back. But you just paid a QB coming off of an Achilles over 100m guaranteed, expecting him to play out 2-3 years of that deal, only to then draft a QB, who it can be argued is one of the three most pro-ready QBs in this draft, who doesn’t need to sit for 2-3 years.

My theory is that the GM never wanted Kirk Cousins in the first place. He either don't think he's good enough or doesn't believe he'll be good after the injury. The only reason Kirk is there is because the owner wanted immediate stability at the position and pushed for the signing. I wouldn't be surprised if we find out Fontenot was lukewarm on the Kirk signing the entire time. And if the truly doesn't believe in Kirk, this was a bold move to keep his job.

There’s so many false narratives being floated to discredit Penix. Atlanta’s defense was actually really good last year especially considering they had moron coach and a below average QB turning the ball over time and time again. The offense has talent littered all over and Kirk is 36 coming of an Achilles injury. The reason for this backlash isn’t that they picked a QB it’s that the falcons switched up and picked Penix over the media darling McCarthy

the issue is that it jut shows the level of incompetence in Atlanta's management staff. There is no direction and no plan. Forget about people's opinion of Cousins and how successful he is in the playoffs. If you like Penix fine get him.. If you like Cousins fine go get him. The only way you can screw it up is to do both. Penix is ready to play now and is oldest QB in the draft so sitting him for 2-3 years is wasteful. wild idea... did the Falcons draft Penix ahead of all those QB needy teams in hopes of trying to pull some kind of major heist trade with them? Consider this trade... Falcons offer up Bijan and Penix to the Raiders for Maxx Crosby and someone else... maybe like a Nate Hobbs or something. Crosby is a cornerstone player but Penix gives the Raiders a chance at a QB for the next 15 years and they really need Bijan far more than the Falcons do. It would be a major risk and a bit of a lottery ticket but getting a QB would be far more valuable than anything Crosby could offer.

@@explained4242 A move that makes neither of your potential franchise players happy is not good for your longterm success. The fact that Penix is older means he is less likely to accept sitting on the bench for three years. You say we can cross that bridge when you get there, but we may never get there. He may ask to be traded by the third year. As for Cousins being injured, based on past history, there is a far better chance that Penix will be injured. And if Penix is the starter, Cousins isn't on the team. You don't draft a top 10 QB to be a good back up. They are not trying to win now, we had a need at DE, DT, WR, FS, and CB that were all greater than our need at QB and we used our best asset on a QB to sit for maybe the next four years. We used a second and third round pick on one DT that i a rotational player at best. And we used our other third round pick on an unathletic outside linebacker. This team isn't trying to win, they are trying not to be bad. Every move we have made is to just not have a losing record. We have done nothing that would make us better than the top teams in the NFC.

What if after sitting him for four year Penix doesn't want to resign with the Falcons? Why would we give Cousins 100M guaranteed and no trade clause if we planned on taking a QB in the first round? The way his contract is set up, we can't even trade him away, he has to be on this team for a minimum of two year because we can't get out of paying his salary until then. If we knew we were going to draft Penix, we would have structured his deal so that his contract didn't register as deadcap on our books if we had to move him. This plan was not thought out in any way, shape, form, or fashion. Why do you think the fans were booing at the party in Mercedes Benz when the pick was announced? Why do you think this is the biggest story in this years draft? Why do you think none of the media reacted positively the night it happened? A no brianer means something is obvious, this was not. If you have to come out and explain it, it isn't a no brainer. The whole conversation about Penix and the Cousins is dumb because Mr Blank told him to have a succession plan for the QB position because this is basicly the Matt Ryan end of his career situation all over again. In two yr Kirk Cousins will be the same age Ryan was when they tried to get Watson to come to Atlanta. I yr later Ryan is in the broadcast booth. Just like they thought. Kirk got 100mil because thats the going rate of QBs that have 4G passing yard seasons consistently. -Also, Kirk is coming off a 13 win season - His injury season he was on track to have MVP type states ie. 4,600 yard passing 48 to 50 TDs 11 ints. When you have those type of stats and your WR is 1st All pro season. You getting 100mil + thats just the going rate of that kind of production. Its not a point of they didnt know that Penix would fall to them its a point that they didnt expect all the QBs to go off the Board in the 1st the way they all did. Hell nobody knew. Most folks though only 2 would go early and the rest would be in the late 20s and early 2nd round. But when 4 teams call you trying to get Penix and thats the guy that you wanted then guess what...everything changes and you have to take your guy now instead of later like you wanted. Thats the way the draft went. They wanted to trade back up but couldnt ...it is what it is.

He’s a good QB it’s the fact that they paid cousins 100 million dollars if that was the case, just draft penix and build around him. The pick makes zero sense

2 things can be true - penix is absolutely good enough to be chosen at 8, and the falcons completely failed from a planning standpoint. How does this happen? Like at what point did Arthur Blank sign off on this and how was he convinced after dropping $100 million on a qb to apparently go all in

I saw the crew on first take defend this trying to compare it to Green Bay with Rodgers/Love. Remember greenbay wasn’t having losing records, they were winning games and making the playoffs. They drafted him so high with no signs that the falcons are just gonna magically win games and compete. You watch the press conference and it’s just them guaranteeing winning seasons, it’s laughable

Kirk is a high floor low ceiling QB.... Kirk can win in that division but will not likely take ATL far in the playoffs... But can help instill a level of professionalism & competency on which Penix & front office can build on

@@StarboundUK Kirk can throw it, that’s a given but don’t eliminate the Bucs cause they still are favored in that division. Can they even make the playoffs? I don’t think so. The front office GUARANTEED winning seasons so let’s see how that goes. This doesn’t make sense in so many levels

The QB isn’t the issue it’s the fact that if they knew they wanted a QB then they shouldnt have even signed cousins to a 180 million dollar contract, they could’ve used that for resources towards free agency to build around penix but instead they put their franchise back another 3-4 years that’s the issue.
@sethstine4698
@sethstine4698 Ай бұрын
@@BrianJr_ 43 million a year for an above average qb; not bad. Penix can sit and learn for a couple of years. Maybe longer. Cousins is nearly 40. I'm sure that he won't be healthy enough to start every single week for 4 years straight. So, Penix comes in as a respectable back up if Cousins gets injured or until Cousins is 100%. And in 2-4 years, Atlanta won't have to be searching for a quarterback (AGAIN). They already have one. And hopefully a damn good one. And over the next 4 years, Atlanta will have over TWENTY draft picks to get an edge or a corner and whomever else people are crying about the Falcons not drafting 1st.
