The Falcons are NOT a good destination for Michael Penix Jr. | First Take
On First Take, I explains why I feel the Atlanta Falcons made the wrong decision drafting Michael Penix Jr. with the 8th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As a Saints fan, I kept hearing about us potentially drafting Bo Nix, and I would have been apoplectic had we done so, not bc of Nix, but because of the restructure that had us keep Carr. Thankfully, we went somewhat smarter and I am even happier with the pie to the face of Falcons fans everywhere

Irony is this is the most NOT keeping it a buck I've ever seen of Mina. She's smart enough to know Cousins deal is really a 2 year deal that the Falcons can clearly afford to absord the dead cap money for if Penix Jr turns out to be a top 10 QB. In a league where the only way teams can practically win a Super Bowl without a top 10 QB is with a generational roster, one that a project pass rusher at 8 was not going to create for the Falcons. The truth is she just doesn't think Penix Jr is worth a top 10 pick and she is hiding behind it being about the Cousins element and timetable when it's obvious why it would work perfectly if Penix turns out to be great and they were sold on him in the evaluation process.

Crazy take man. You pay that kind of money for a competent QB. Plain and simple. That’s the going rate. Kirk Cousins is good enough that he can win the NFC South. That’s the first option because Free Agency happens first. Have to lock him in because in the offseason, realizing you had THREE WHOLE FUCKING YEARS OF Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke, Desmond Ridder then Taylor Heinicke again….. CLEARLY shows the QB position ain’t some shit you can just put anybody in and be ok. Our defense in ONE YEAR doubled its sack count with a new coordinator. I get it, people want a pass rush like the old Bears or old broncos or even the new Eagles…… but the WORST thing about our team last year (or last FEW years) was QB play. Kirk Cousins is what Mariota was. A stop-gap QB. A very high tier stop-gap QB. But then what??? Settle for Heinicke to be his backup?????? Then what do we do??? Wait until next year or the year after to find a long term QB like Matt Ryan??? RISKY!!! How about since we suck so much, we got a Top-10 pick, let’s invest in our future while letting our money (100M for Kirk) work for us?! Because Kirk is good enough to win our division, what happens when we start picking in the 20s or 30s next year???? We’d have to give up every fucking pick we own to get back in the Top-10 of WHATEVER year we do it, just to get a decent QB…. Nah, I’ll pass. This was the right lick and it makes PLENTY SENSE! Why wait when you can secure him now? $100 mil for the vet who can win the division. Draft a rookie to succeed him for the future. Simple. Better than what Arthur Smith was thinking .

Because that is the market price for a competent veteran QB, kirk cousins won't be playing till 45 like tom brady so they got themselves a quarterback they know can start and drafted for their future all at once. @truthbearer7891

The money they paid Kirk Cousins is the type of money you pay for any starting QB who isn't horrible in free agency to be a starter. The mental gynmastics ppl have not understanding that it's a PRIVILEGE to be able to do both and not a negative is laughable. Most of the time teams aren't in position to have a QB who can play at a top 12 level now while also getting a QB who can be top 10 QB in the future. The Falcons are and they are taking advantage. The chances they will be in draft position to get a QB as good as Penix Jr in the future after seasons with Kirk Cousins is slim and none. And if Penix Jr becomes a top 10 QB that's worth 10x more than any pass rusher they could have acquired with the 8th pick

IMO they fell in love with Penix as a prospect even though he makes no sense in this scenario. If you're picking a guy to start two years from now, why pick someone that old? If you're worried about injuries with Cousins, why pick an injury prone prospect? And you're pissing off both QBs because Cousins is surprised you want to move on so fast and Penix is surprised he has to wait even longer to get real experience in the league.

You either wait for the draft and pick Penix, then fill the team up with needs with that $100 million guaranteed... or, you go with Cousins and fill the teams needs through the draft. @@True-Lies41 JMO, it just creates locker room problems. He feels that he's an established vet who has earned a starting job, and the salary supported that. Then his new team was sitting pretty at pick #8 to load them up with another big weapon to make a run, and they draft his replacement. Hard to be a team guy when your management gives you a big vote of no confidence. So he's going to be kind of pissed at the organization, and anytime he has a bad game, everyone will be calling for the young guy who looks great in camp to be the starter. Then if he's solid for 2 years, do you put the future in, or do you let him sit for 3 years only to give him a chance at the tail end of his contract? This isn't some late 1st round pick, or 2nd rounder. At pick #8, he shouldn't be sitting like that. My feeling is that Cousins isn't going to be quite the same player that he would have been. Then you'll have some older vets wanting to win now with Cousins and younger guys wanting to look towards the future. My guess is that there was already a rift and him ratting them out for tampering had something to do with hit.

So the idiotic assumption that the Falcons would "plug in" Dallas Turner and make the Super Bowl wasn't even true by the same people saying Penix, Jr. was a horrible pick FOR THE SAME REASON. Now, let's switch it up and say oh ok they could have gotten Latu (forgive my mispelling). Guess what, he has a worse medical history than Penix, Jr. and I think he is older as well. Drafting him wasn't a mistake. Getting impatient and signing 35 year old Kirk Cousins was the mistake. A guy who just popped his achilles, paid him like $180 million dollars of which over $100 million of it is guaranteed, instead of just signing a cheaper free agent and then getting your QB in the draft, like you did anyway. The Falcons, likely have some type of buyer's remorse and made this move precisely for that reason. There's no guarantees that Kirk Cousins doesn't get reinjured THIS season, and then what do they do? Everyone was absolutely perplexed when they signed Kirk and saw the contract they gave him. He's about to be 36 years old this summer. They liked Penix the most behind Jayden, they took him. Everyone has slept on Penix' talent because of his age and injury history. But assuming the injury history wasn't there, he'd arguably be the 2nd best prospect in the draft.

Not having an actual plan for life after your 36yr old QB is exactly how the Falcons end up with Mariota-Ridder seasons. If Kirk is just average the Falcons will make the playoffs and won't be in position to draft a QB next year to backup then 37 yrs old Kirk Cousins. Cousins is a beast. If things play out the right way and how they should, we're not going to have a top pick again anytime soon. Best case scenario, he can sit behind cousins for a couple years. Yes, we desperately need a top tier pass rusher. But as a Falcons fan, that is our ONLY pressing need. Everything else would be bolstering positions and hopefully finding a diamond in the rough. FYI, with the talk about his age, say he sits for 2 years. He'd be 26 by the time of his first start. A little older, yes. But Aaron Rodgers was 25 (TWENTY FIVE) when he made his first start. With almost half of the top 10 picks going QB, including 1-2-3., after Bo Nix at 12 the next QB was drafted in the 5th Round at 15. That is a chasm that says there's no b-class QB this year. If that's talent evaluation from the league, then there was no way that Atlanta could trade back and get a QB. It was all or nothing because this year's draft was so all or nothing.

Signing the veteran free agent QB for The Big Bag makes sense (I guess…I wouldn’t have paid Cousins that kind of money based on his career arc), and drafting a skilled quarterback out of college for an entry level quarterback to save salary cap space makes sense. Doing both is stupid on a level that only the Atlanta Falcons are capable of reaching.

It's always a mistake when your two biggest moves in the off season do not support each other. I am certain it's horrible for Pennix himself, because he now has to deal with this fallout.

Stephan A is such a loser. Seattle signing Matt Flynn for $10 mil and finding a gem in the 3rd is WAY different than signing Kirk Cousins for $100m guaranteed and drafting his backup at 8th overall. Anyone defending this is insane.

Poor Mina, I don't know how she can suffer such fools. Her face says it all! Haha.
