This is Adrian's first ever driving lesson in a Manual car! He has already got an automatic licence.
He knows how to drive and how to deal with other road users but struggles with how to use the clutch pedal as well as changing gears while driving.

I remember when I first started driving after I passed. I was so nervous, I thought something was wrong, but I eventually built up my confidence and I really enjoy it nowadays. The key thing to remember is- you only start learning to drive once you pass.

"You only start learning to drive once you pass." I have been in cars with so-called qualified drivers who are far, far worse than learners. Nobody taught them to drive like that, and there is only one way you can get that bad, and that is by driving unsupervised for years and by picking up unnecessary and downright dangerous habits from other, equally appalling drivers. As a former driving instructor I would modify that old chestnut to "You only learn to drive _badly_ once you pass your test"!

I’ve been a learner for 3 years and i got my license 2 weeks ago, me and my dad drove every day weeks before my second test so i feel like a competent driver, I did go to a 2 week speed course also so I was really prepared. I got a few things wrong on my second test like when I reversed around a corner i went up a bit on the sidewalk but the instructor told me that I could do it again and when I start there was a bunch of cars coming so I stopped, even tho I couldn’t complete the reversing I passed since I looked around a lot and was aware of the cars around me. I also almost missed a turn that was only a few meters after I got of the motor way, I have dyslexia and I told the instructor this before the test and he overlooked my almost fail because of this. I have a automatic license and I live in Sweden. the written test is 70 questions and you have to have 52 right answers and I got 56. 5 questions is just questions they have to see if they can use these questions in future tests. I am really proud of myself for passing, I have ADHD and Autism so I’m not really confident in myself. Sorry for the ramble, there is probably no one that wants to rest this haha.

@@Purplefrog03 I read everything, thanks my Swedish brother (I'm from Norway, by the way)! And congrats on getting your license! Before I dive into my own adventure, how are your driving skills now? So, I've got my driving test in four days and, honestly, the nerves are kicking in big time. I've been learning for five months, and while I feel pretty solid with most of my driving, parallel parking still gives me the chills. My social anxiety doesn't help either - I'm terrified I'll be so awkward, self-critical, and extremely nervous during the test that I won't be able to show my true skills, like I do when practicing with my brother. But hey, I've got to stay calm and remind myself it's not the end of the world. If I don't pass, I'll just take it again. No biggie. Wish me luck! 😊

One thing I found helps people get familiar with the clutch pedal (which can be useful merely when switching to a new different car) is to start practicing driving with only the clutch pedal (ie, not touching the gas pedal). On level ground this should be possible with almost all cars. It really helps you get a good feeling for where the bite point is. Once you have managed to smoothly get the car rolling with just the clutch pedal, adding the gas pedal should just make things even easier.

I'm in a very similar situation...learned to drive on automatic (Automatics are the most common type of vehicles in Canada) but had only one experience on a manual. I did understand the theory of the mechanics of how the manual transmission worked so that helped, as soon as the car was moving I was driving like a pro, but getting it started from a standstill was where I needed the practice lol.

It really depends how fast you're going. If you're driving down a hill at 30mph and need to stop or slow down, you'd press the breaks first or else the car speeds up. However if you're driving up a steep hill at 2nd gear to a junction, you may press the clutch first as the hill would do the breaking for you.

Bought a Mazda 2 GT sport nav and love it, pukka little car, not much power (90bhp) but oh so nippy and fun to to drive. Yes being an MOT Tester/ vehicle technician i could of repaired it but £4,000 for a good second hand gearbox, £1900 for a clutch pack (yes altough automatic they have a clutch pack) and £700 for a flywheel, it was time to trade it in.

I always keep my heel down when managing the clutch. I find it WAY easier to find the bitting point because I have a much more 'precise' control over the pedal. I guess what really matters is how you place your feet on the pedal so it doesn't slip. I never had it slip on me, anyways, and to new drivers it's probably much easier to raise the heel because their 'sensitivity' is very low to begin with.

To keep the heel down you need to feel where your foot rests on the clutch. If you touch it with your toes and keep the heel down your foot will slip and depress the pedal. That's why they tell new drivers to press it with whole foot because it's harder to make a mistake. Once you've driven a bit and know the car it's fine to rest the heel on the floor.

Not sure if this is something one should recommend, but I started shifting gears with me in the passenger seat while my father was driving. Meaning he told me which gear to shift into and I watched his clutch pedal (easier on left-hand drive cars) and shifted gears when he depressed the clutch. I think this progressed into me anticipating the gear to shift into and I would ask “Second”, he said “Yes” and on I went. This gives you some experience as to when to shift into which gear and how to move the lever to get into the desired gear. It probably also helped with getting a feeling for how you depress the clutch pedal and when to move the lever. Except for the feel of moving the lever, you can probably get something similar alone from observing somebody else driving (but I guess doing it yourself teaches you better).
@-_Nuke_-
@-_Nuke_- 2 жыл бұрын
That was excellent coaching! The most important thing in driving a manual car, is the ability to move at extremely low speeds. Far bellow 1km/h... The way that this is done, is by simply pressing the clutch all the way down, and keeping it down will allow the car to move with as much speed it has left. So if you are going slow ant you want to go even slower without the car stalling, you'll need to press the clutch all the way down and let the car roll with as momentum as it already has. That momentum will decrease overtime making your car reach all and slower speeds without stalling. That will allow the driver to take as much time as he/she needs to *think* of what he wants to do next, coordinate his feet and most importantly, allow him to NOT PANIC. When I'm coaching someone for the first time, I will tell them this, so they will relieve themselves from the pressure of time.

@-_Nuke_-
@-_Nuke_- 2 жыл бұрын
@@mayanksaxena3551 yes its the same thing, but I'm lazy and I'll just press the clutch rather than put it to neutral because then I'll have to insert another gear back

A good tip is to have your left hand on the gear whenever you are approaching any type of situation and that way you don't become stressed and start to panic. When driving to fast you start to panic which minimizes your time of making a decision. Always adjust your speed depending on the situation and have that hand on the clutch, Also when changing gear try to feel without looking and memories the different gear spots. One thing that helped me was, if you have problems when changing gear, go to neutral first while pressing down the clutch and then change to the gear you want, for some people it's easier to change gear from neutral and to whatever gear your changing too next. When you get better at this, you will notice from how little you need to break cause you always adjust your speed which is also good for the environment and also saves the breaks lifetime.

Not a good idea, it can and does cause wear in the gear selector mechanism, in fact you taught not to do that.

@GurreG: A bad habit, when you change back to an automatic your reflex is to grasp the gear selector, in newer auto models the selector is ultra short and stubby.

At 33:02 is a really good point on my first lessons i was doing the same action for the clutch as i did with the brake and accelerator and it caused so man issues second lesson i realised that i would get the bite point and then could move my foot anymore. Changed how i used the clutch and later that lessons started to be able to use clutch to do slow movement in traffic.

@@ClearviewDriving I agree. It is straightforward if you concentrate and are very careful when turning out of junctions or somewhere like a petrol station. I've driven in mainland Europe and the States a lot and it is much more challenging to get used to different road layouts and signs. In the USA authorities seem to economise on bollards indicating which side of the lane you are supposed to be on. France on the other hand has little arrows on bollards at most junctions which help a lot. But I do love the big red signs in the States on slip roads ('ramps' to Americans) which state 'WRONG WAY'. a lot of GREAT tips from this video, ive always struggled with being in the centre of speed bumps and just the road in general. The shoulder top really helped. Ive also never kept my heel off the floor when doing my clutch. Could you describe how the clutch is meant to feel? Is it a feeling in your foot? Or the sound etc :)

I've got an automatic only license. Like every other 17 year old, I got lessons for my 17th birthday and the instructor made me terrifying driving so after five traumatic lessons I stopped and convinced myself that I was only capable of doing automatic, maybe because my Mum has an automatic license so that's all I know, anyway I passed with zero minor faults and have had no incidents in my 10+ years of driving. Anyway, I'd really like to learn manual now but I worry it's pointless or people will think it's stupid so I'm torn. I also worry that by doing that I'll lose the driving confidence I have now. Conflicted! 🤯😂

This is quite a late reply but if you have the time and money and really want to try manual just do it i think it'll be easier since you've already been driving for so long youll have that confidence on the road and really nothing bad can come out of it since you're already a good driver so if you dont like it its not really a big problem :)

@d1oftwins
@d1oftwins 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he is pretty good for a first try, the calmness of the instructor might have something to do with it. But the handbrake position is a design flaw, like, who in their right mind is putting it there? Are the cockpit designers assuming you will not use the handbrake frequently in traffic, it's just for when you drive off...well they are wrong! What if you parked uphill and someone is close to your rear bumper, you have do grind the clutch while bend forward to release the handbrake, nice, now you have less control. GoOD jOb dEsigNeRs! 👍
