I feel like I’m truly understanding the what and why and when of driving. You make the subject of driving a manual so much clearer and consistent than a whole lot of other channels out there. The biggest thing I learnt from this video is finally understanding why we add a bit of gas before releasing the clutch and that when you don’t do so some cars may try to add gas for you while others don’t. So it’s best to get used to adding that bit of gas yourself so you have consistent results across different cars. You’re also the first person to explain clearly how to take your foot off the clutch with predictable results

@@SaberisloveSaberislife I believe that if you give it a lot of gas and you are very slow with your gear changes you are "riding the clutch". ie you are trying to apply a lot of power before you have fully lifted the clutch and this is the major cause of clutch burn. This is why people think it's bad to hold on the clutch. However at low speeds such as when you are setting off, or parking you should use the clutch for a smoother start and fine control, the small amount of power at these speeds won't cause clutch burn. This channel is really good, you won't go wrong following his advice.

@@DavidLee-vi8ds the crazy thing is that "riding the clutch" is the only way to get smooth driving. Similar to an automatic. Doing it those old school ways always leads to sloppy shifts where the car jerks.

@@mariov4341 Technically, it's not "riding the clutch" if it's at low speeds, it's "holding the clutch", it's the correct way to drive and it's what's taught to beginners. It's considered an important skill for parking and slow heavy traffic. I remember practicing it a lot with my instructor. People who "ride the clutch" are those who make slow gear changes at high speeds and apply a lot of gas while bringing up the clutch very slowly, it's better to bring the clutch briskly at high speeds. It's also safe to bring up the clutch without applying much gas or any gas in most modern vehicles because the engines will automatically apply enough gas to prevent stalling. On older more primitive vehicles if you try to go up a gear prematurely at low speeds without applying gas you run the risk of stalling which is why some people got into the habit of giving it too much gas during gear changes. I've been told by a mechanic the people who really "ride the clutch" are those that use the clutch as a foot rest and never move their foot off the clutch. They drive around with the clutch only partially engaged and burn out the clutch. I was amazed that people actually drove like that.

Appreciate the tip with adding gas before lifting the clutch! I've always been taught (and people around me too as far as I know) to rely on the clutch to start the car, and then adding gas after. Gonna try your method out soon, hope it can help me start smoother! Thanks

Wow and thanks! I found the tip on changing down gears without slowing super useful (always learnt to blip the throttle when downshifting but never thought to just hold the throttle and come off the clutch to get it up to speed)

I've had 3 different instructors, I've got my practice driving test this weekend, and I've only just found out that you can hold the biting point to pull away smoothly. I've always been taught to just continuously release the clutch. No wonder it felt like I was dumping the clutch so often.
