I remember hearing this song when it first came out. I was just 11 but it was smoooth! A man named Lonnie Donegan wrote it for him. Lonnie died in 2002. His son, Peter, was on The Voice in 2019 and Sir Tom Jones was the first to hit on him. Tom Jones heard the singer’s last name and asked if there was any relation to Lonnie Donegan. Peter acknowledged that was his dad and really surprised Tom. They sang this song together that night. Both Lonnie’s widow and Peter’s wife watched from backstage. What a memorable moment. 💜😊🎶

Im an old dude, playing music for over 50 years, I actually had a crooked agent book my band into a club as "The Tom JOnes Revue-One night ONly"- he had a fake portfolio on Jones, took thousands of dollars in front money from the club owner, hopped on a plane and left my band to the WOLVES man. You best believe there were a LOT of swanky people from NYC arrive in limos, El Dorados, floor length mink coats who had paid BIG $$ to see Tom Jones. I think we played one song and a riot broke out. They swarmed the stage and beat the shit out of our singer. I made it out in one piece.

Hello, I love your reaction. I'm 68 and I remember Tom Jones very well. In 1965 we lived in close communities and nobody could get away with anything. Furthermore, nobody was exposed f you were getting up to mischief as there was an enormous amount of shame attached. It really was another world: LP Hartley wrote 'the past is a foreign country and we do things differently there'. We were far more restricted. Another point you made about Tom's singing. He may have the gift of a good voice but the amount of dedication it took for him to get there was enormous. I really did enjoy your reaction: it made me laugh. You know what else is cool - he'd already been married to his wife Melinda for 10 years when he recorded this. They met when they were in grade school and married at 17! And stayed married for 59 years, til she passed in 2016 from cancer. He sounds like he really knew that kind of heartbreak pain, but he'd loved her since they were children.

Just remember at that time there wasn’t all the equipment they have today, it was just him and the band!

He's a judge on the UK TV show The Voice and can still sing well in his 80s. Don't worry, he wasn't gonna let another woman cheat on him- watch Delilah to see what came of one who tried that. At one time he was on Death Row, as described in The Green Green Grass of Home, he was also lonely and destitute (I Who Have Nothing) but is a great survivor. He did find a woman to be proud of- She's a Lady.
