A-ha was out early with the special 80's vibe, which we know so well today. People needed something to hang the music on to learn to like it, and the record company understood that. If you think they would have spent so much money producing this video if the song had not had solid hit potential, then you do not know how much work it was to make this video. The song has been played 3 million times in radio in the US since its release, and that was some years ago. It is at least 250 times a day without the video for 35 years!. Do not misunderstand - the video is great, but you can not separate the one from another. It is a whole package, and it is a great package, timeless - a true classic.

In 1985, the pinnacle of technology was the Apple IIe personal computer. I don't know what it took to create the cartoon sequences, but I'm guessing it wasn't simple or easy. I was 20 when this came out and I was blown away by it.

TLDR: Girl meets boy. They struggle over adversity, are separated, and reunite. The story concludes in another video (do not watch it). Oh, and the animation and those racing costumes reminded me of racing from the 1930's and 40's so I saw it as retro in the 80's. Motorcycle racing montage: preparing for the race. Fueling up, putting on racing gear, sizing up competition, lining up at start line, the race. Cuts to young woman reading a comic showing the race in a cafe and is served a beverage and given a check. She views A-ha winning in the comic and celebrating. Aha is pictured in panels looking at the woman, she looks at him intensely and he winks in real time. She is surprised and he reaches out of the comic inviting her in. Girl reading a comic Boy invites girl into his world. He shows her around and sings, she dances, That world goes upside down, motorcycle rivals become villains, when the comic is crumpled up (The waitress believes the woman (nowhere to be seen in the cafe) did not pay her tab and crumples the comic the young girl is in and throws it away). Boy fights off villains and he and girl run away. Boy opens a way out for girl to escape. She re-enters her world by by the trashed comic and flees the shop with it. She opens the comic to see what happens to him. She sees what happens after she left. She sees him pushing her into the escape, they armed men advancing, a plumbing wretch fall. She sees him prone on the ground and wonders about him. He comes to, fights to escape his world and is reunited with her. Your surprise and happiness were wonderful to watch.

Morten Harket is one of the best voices of the 80s if not the best. The Norwegian band A-ha is not a one-hit wonder. Other great songs is High and Low, Stay on thes roads, Foot of the mountain to name a few. I'm absolutely sure you will love each one of their songs. I was twenty-five years old when I first discovered this great band and it's very talented lead singer.
