They wrote and performed this song with all acoustic instruments as a response to jazz purists who were criticizing them for using electric instruments and playing jazz-rock fusion. This song is one of my favorite acoustic jazz pieces.

Really?! Wow. I never knew that. And actually, I thought for years that SC was playing some sort of electric double bass and then switches to electric bass. That was until I saw them playing it live in an old video posted to YT several years ago. I guess the amplification still gives it a synthesized feel, but what a “clap back” to the critics this must have been.

This! This! I always marveled at the fact that this was acoustic. Played it for friends and only after playing pointed out that is was all acoustic. Stunned faces. But the idea that Chick and Company did this to thumb their noses at the Jazz establishment had never occurred to me. I love it. Side note: Could this composition have been performed in 1920? Yes. Let that sink in.

Chick Corea-Keys Lenny White-Drums Stanley Clarke-Bass Al Di Meola-Guitar Return to Forever, founded by Chick Corea, is often cited as one of the core groups of the jazz-fusion movement of the 1970s. Polo, you’re listening to one of the essential albums and songs of the genre. The point of the channel is for you to give us your reaction to music that you haven’t heard or are not comfortable with. You’ve definitely done that here. This music is not for everyone, mostly older people adore this music. Five great bassists for me of the modern era are: Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and maybe the best of all, Jaco Pastorius. You’ve now heard two of them, Stanley and Marcus. Great reaction and thanks for keeping an open mind. 🔥✌️

You jumped in the deep end. All four of these musicians are masters, some of multiple instruments. They all have extensive solo careers, and tons of collaborations with other artists, that showcase their virtuosity as well. This is one of the defining bands, and albums, of the genre known as “jazz rock fusion” or “fusion.” Often, but not exclusively, instrumental, and showcasing virtuoso performances. The best in the genre also exhibit great songwriting. Happy exploring!

This is hilarious for me to watch. I saw them play this at the Dorthy Chandler Pavillion in L.A. with four of my scraggly surfer/musician friends when we were 16 years old. I can pretty much sing along with every solo on this song. Each of these players were arguably the best in the world on their instruments at the time (1976). And…Stevie Wonder came out on stage and sang superstition with Return To Forever backing him up. Glad people are still discovering this.

Polo! Im almost 66 now and I believe it was 1975 when my girlfriend and I went walking downtown San Diego. We were walking on C Street and stumbled upon The Community Concourse. The Marquis read : Chick Corea and RETURN TO FOREVER. We were about 17 or 18 years old and pretty much rock and rollers at the time. Long story short, we paid about $6.50 to get in about 5 minutes prior to start. WE GOT BLOWN AWAY! Chick Corea, Al Dimeola, Stanley Clark and Lenny White. First half was all acoustic then Intermission. 2nd half was All Electric! I've seen almost all the most popular major rock 'n' roll bands in the world, and , this concert was second to none!!!

What a way to start the new year, with one of the best songs ever. May your whole year be so brilliant! Here we go...and if you don't love this I will be dumbfounded. Well okay! I'm gonna put that in the "Approves of" column. The "Duel of the Tyrant and Jester" from the same album is another that brilliantly displays their personal pyrotechnical prowess (ppp not to be confused with pp which would not be proper to display). Chick Corea, RIP, was leader and keyboard player, which is why he is more forward than more keyboard players. I once stumbled into a free concert in the Massachusetts woods one autumn. A fine smoke in the air made the concert all the more wondrous. He was accompanied by Vibes player Gary Burton, another PhD in music and also master of the tools.

RTF was the class of Jazz Fusion. Led by Chic Corea on keys, Stanley Clarke on upright bass Al DiMeola on acoustic guitar and Lenny White on the skins. All acoustic. If you go to KZfaq and watch the live version it is very much enjoyable. Stanley goes back and forth using fingering and a bow. RTF was ahead of their time. Check out all their music. Another band who come about in fusion was from across the pond named Brand X. Phil Collins on drums of course Percy Jones fretless bass master and John Goodsall on guitar (RIP), Robin Lumley on keys. Kenwood Denard also on the drums on some of the albums. If you’re a fusion fan and RTF you will love Brand X. Don’t forget Weather Report Jaco Pastorius on bass Peter Erskine on drums Joe Zawinul on keys and Wayne Shorter on sax (RIP) and the great Mahavishnu with Billy Cobham on drums and John McLaughlin on guitar. My top 4 fusion bands of all time. Thanks for the reaction and introducing fusion to a new generation.

Welcome to Return to Forever! Four of the greatest jazz musicians (Chck Corea on piano, stanley Clarke on bass, Al DiMeola on guitar & Lenny White on drums) who came together to create in of the best albums of all time. Not one of the best jazz-fusions albums but one of the best albums, period! Along with Miles Davis' Bitches Brew this was one of the 2 seminal jazz fusion albums. Now, that you've listened to it, imagine hearing it played on a system that 4 determined high school kids combined their money and labor to assemble, turned up full-blast, 3500 Watts from 10 amplifiers into 40 KLIPSH speakers in a small auditorium. We spent the next 15 - 20 years, looking for (AND finding) the best artists, the best recordings, and performances, in all different genres, to experience on the super stereo we built. We had a most impressive vinyl and tape library, before DIGITAL took over! ---> It was the psychedelic era, with wide-spread availability of LSD, Psilocybin (Shrooms), and Peyote. We didn't hesitate to participate, and we developed some pretty good active light-shows, as a side benefit. Now, re-imagine everything described here, playing the whole ROMANTIC WARRIOR ALBUM and many others, every weekend, all summer long. I'm 73 and still kicking!

11:00 No one that knows anything about music would ever say that what Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola, Lenny White, or Chick Corea play on this masterpiece is simple. No one ever anywhere. BTW: The "Romantic Warrior" is Don Quioxote

I've seen RTF a couple times, in concert. It's insane how great these musicians are! I've seen Al Di Meola (the guitarist) a few times apart from RTF, and I've seen Stanley Clarke (the bass player) a couple times apart from RTF. You cannot believe how intense those concerts were!

It is very hard! I was blessed and got to see them on the Romantic Warrior tour in 1976.

It's such a beautiful thing to watch the reaction of someone hearing this song for the first time when those of us who are in the know, know every single note of every single instrument in this song and if our hands could write we would write out the music perfectly. best song in the world. my opinion, next to Flight of the Newborn, Return to Forever.

That is the soul of Jazz ( Fusion) and your hearing an upright bass. You're listening to real musicians and musicanship from some of the GOATs of that genre: Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, Al etc. this is not mainstream music. Check these cats out live !

The reaction you have was the same I had. Stanley Clarke is the bassit. Not sure heard of him. One of the best all time. The guitarist is Al Dimeola. His style is killer on a acoustic guitar playing. And Lenny White on the Drums and Chick Corea on the keys. This song is my favorite off the album.
