I did this for my business math instructor in college in '80. He hadn't seen it. He said what he found hard to believe was I could remember how to screw up math like that. Classic bit.

The guys did this same bit in a movie some years earlier. The question the landlord asked him about going to school. In the movie he says did you go to school stupid? Costello's response was ... Yes and I came out the same way! ; ))

When I was like 10 years old, my accountant father made me explain why all three of those were wrong. I was irritated at the time, but every time I see this, going on 45 years now, I give him a little thanks for the interest he took in my education.

That clip was actually taken from an episode of Abbott and Costello's 1950s sitcom. So, it was more like 'Friends' than you thought.

I first started watching Abbott & Costello in their movies. They came on TV on Sunday afternoons after church. They were all hilarious, My favorites were Jack and the Beanstalk and Abbot & Costello Meet the Mummy. But there are others as well. Well worth you time if you wanna watch some old school comedy

When I teach future math teachers, I have them watch this clip and talk about the issues in this clip. 2 tens for a 5 is a great skit by them. Others have mentioned "loafing" and it is good as well. 2 tens for a five is your typical con comedy and loafing is fun wordplay. I enjoyed the reaction.

How many people laughed when he said, "I don't think we will get into any complex math here." I am not old enough to have actually seen them when they were current but they had a popular tv show that was in reruns that they showed after Yankee games and during rain delays in the 60's and 70's and this bit is from that tv show. So any Yankee fan from that era, knows Abbot and Costello very well.

Also look up from the TV Show when Lou has to go to the dentist skit. Absolutely hilarious.

Tom Lehrer has a song out called "New Math" that you might find funny - and entertaining. He was at one time a teacher of Mathematics at MIT but is best known as a social commenter and comedian/singer.

Two more great A&c routines: “Bagel Street” and “Niagra Falls”.

This skit appears in the 1941 film “In the Navy” but instead of room rent it’s donuts. Check out “Jonah and the Whale” “Handcuffs” and The Payphone Sketch (Alexander 4444).

You missed the intro part. This bit removes it. There was a 30 second pre-bit where Lou Costello was talking to Bud Abbott about this. The full routine is over 4 minutes long.

They originally did this skit in ‘Buck Privates’ (Universal Studios 1940). Another good skit from the show was the Alexander 4444 (phone call). In the movies the skit was Alexander 2222.

I first saw this skit in college when my math professor showed us this for fun. I couldn't stop laughing throughout the entire class lol

My favorite comic moment is from a skit called "Meatballs" where a chef unsuccessfully tries to cure Costello of his irrational fear by showing him how they are made.

Bud Abbot didn’t feature in this skit. Not only that , Costello is normally the one being bamboozled. Abbot’s presence would’ve made a huge difference. A uniquely talented straight man

If you enjoy Abbott and Costello, you might also like their comedy contemporaries, the Three Stooges. Four of their short films - "Malice in the Palace", "Sing a Song of Six Pants", "Brideless Groom", and "Disorder in the Court" - are in the public domain, so they should be easy to find, and you shouldn't need to worry about copyright. I would recommend "Disorder" first because, personally, I think it's far and away the funniest.

They lost me on the school math once it became an issue of not what the answer is but did you use the formula of the day to get an answer. They don’t check what your answer is just how you got a the answer. 7:07

Hey man the " common core " math is a joke teachers and students both talk about how bad it actually is

The only reason Lou's math "worked" is cos he broke half, if not all, of the standard math rules we were all taught. That last one where he added up all the 13s was cos he treated the tens column (with all the ones) like another ones column. His first effort with the long division (wrong division) was messed up cos he was supposed to determine the times 7 goes into the full 28 after determining it won't go into 2. He ignored the 2 so he could put 7 into 8, then conveniently factors in the 2 and does his funny math to get 21 into which 7 goes nicely 3 times and gives him that goofy 13. Everyone knows 7 goes into 28 four times, period - and all that would have proven was he paid for 4 weeks, not 13 weeks. I could explain the others but nobody cares, cos everybody hates math, lol. I like math, as long as it makes sense... except algebra - that crap was invented by sadists. After seeing this all I learned is some clever and sneaky ways to mess with people who don't know math very well, and make it easier to cheat them (not that I would), lol... So come on folks - get better at math, or be cheated! LOL For the record - at $7/wk for 13 weeks, he owed the landlord $91. Could really use those rates today.
